title says it all really... my 6yr old returned home this weekend with straightened hair. Are your 6 yr olds doing this? Am I just being an old fuddy duddy to even think this might be a bit wrong?

Ok as one off my not a regular thing, far too young. My DDs had their's straightened for a wedding when they were 5 (they were bridesmaids and sister in law to be did it).

Olympia2012 · 14/05/2012 09:47

Er, it's temporary! Yabu!

squeakytoy · 14/05/2012 09:47

Er lighten up a bit... it will not have done any permanent harm as a one off! :)

bewitchedandbewildered · 14/05/2012 09:47

If she had got home with Shirley Temple curls instead would you feel the same way?

mumto2andnomore · 14/05/2012 09:47

It's a bit much for every day but for parties etc I don't see the harm

ChaosTrulyReigns · 14/05/2012 09:48

Returned home from where?

UnChartered · 14/05/2012 09:48

'returned home'

i hear a back story..

UnChartered · 14/05/2012 09:49

ohhh Chaos you little x-poster you Grin

RightUpMyRue · 14/05/2012 09:49

As a one off for parties or if you've been messing about with hair and nails etc then, yeah why not if she wanted it done? It's no different to crimping it or putting it in lots of plaits overnight to get a crimpy effect. Having your hair ironed very occasionally is not going to turn you into an image obsessed fruitloop.

Everyday, however, is ridiculous.

mumnosbest · 14/05/2012 09:50

I disagree. My DD4 came back from my sisters with her hair crimped and I ha to ask her not to do it again. Their hair's too soft, I'd worry it would scorch it. My hair was really dry and brittle till I stopped straightening it.

Mrsjay · 14/05/2012 09:50

where was she that she had her hair straightened , I used to do dds at 8 as she has a mane bless her and any moisture would send it into overdrive would go woooosh , its just straight i think you are over reacting a little bit,

My DD used to have her hair straightened at the hairdressers as it is wavy, so easier to cut straight.

I agree that it's fine on rare occasions but would not do it regularly as I don't want her hair damaged.

Olympia2012 · 14/05/2012 09:51

Did the ex's new girlfriend do it for her....?

Mrsjay · 14/05/2012 09:51

I started doing it at 8* , i didnt do it everyday though as it does damage hair but really its not a big deal is it ,

letseatgrandma · 14/05/2012 09:53

Did the ex's new girlfriend do it for her....?

Lol-exactly my thought!!

ZacharyQuack · 14/05/2012 09:55

Maybe it was to kill nits.

Mrsjay · 14/05/2012 09:56

yes ive used straightners to singe nits ( is that how you spell singe Hmm )

DaenerysTargaryen · 14/05/2012 09:56

One offs are fine, I did dd's for her 6th birthday but she won't be having it done again for quite a while, I want her to learn to love her natural hair and not think that straight = beauty.

It will ruin the hair if done regularly but as I said, a one off should not be a big deal.

Who did it? I'd be more worried about what she was being told as it was being straightend tbh was someone telling her how pretty she looks with straight hair?

Chundle · 14/05/2012 09:56

I don't like things like that done on kids. My dd is in year 3 do is 8 and a girl in her class frequently has her hair straightened and highlighted, it already looks very dry

pictish · 14/05/2012 09:57

Yabu. It doesn't do any harm does it?

limetimemummy · 14/05/2012 09:59

lol..no the ex's new GF didn't do it :) Thanks for the view points though..always helps to have other perspectives. Occasional straightening it is then :)

zacharyquack..if it killed nits with a 100% certain result I would be taking my own straightners to her myself when we have had the odd breakout!!
