100s and thousands are the balls.

The silver balls I've got can still break your teeth and are too heavy to go up the hoover. I don't think I bought them that long ago.

diddl · 15/05/2012 12:00

"Not Dutch but have witnessed Dutch folks eating chocolate sprinkles on bread for brekkie. DH used to live there and has also seen it."

You write that as if it´s a really odd thing!

'Sprinkles' is a generic term for anything sugary and sprinkleable.

Hundreds & Thousands are the strands the little balls are Millions.

PoppyWearer · 16/05/2012 04:34

"Roll up, roll up, come and see the amazing, the astounding, the downright odd chocolate-sprinkles-on-bread eating Dutch people!"

Why put the sprinkles on the bread? Surely Nutella is easier?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/05/2012 04:48

Right...

Hundreds and thousands are the sticks. Sprinkles are the balls. Gobblers has the situation properly sussed.

And I'm reliably informed by my kiwi friend of Dutch extraction that small coloured things on bread and butter is called fairy bread.

SconeInSixtySeconds · 16/05/2012 05:10

Small coloured balls on buttered bread are a standard party food here in suburban Brisbane, Australia.

I looked Hmm and Shock the first couple of times. Now I'm just Grin.

I thought that Hundreds and Thousands were the sticks too, I don't remember even being able to buy the balls when I was a child.

You can still get Ice Magic here in Australia

Bluestocking · 16/05/2012 06:09

I remember seeing a little film on children's TV about a Dutch child (part of a series about Children from Many Lands) where he ate hundreds and thousands on bread for breakfast and travelled to school on a boat on the canal.
My parents call chocolate vermicelli "mouse dirt". They have been known to do this in public. Hmm

PoppyWearer · 16/05/2012 07:13

Scone Ice Magic? Really?

ChippyMinton · 16/05/2012 16:51

I'm sure I've seen ice magic in tesco recently.

Gobbledegook - Millions are something else entirely, found in the confectionery aisle not home baking Grin

RabidAnchovy · 16/05/2012 16:56

This Sunday I will make Tiramisu and be done with it

Our ice cream sales man was found on the floor of his van covered in hundreds and thousands(or sprinkles)

Police say he topped himself

marethyu · 09/08/2014 04:24

if I WANT SPIRNLES ON MY ICE CREAM I DON'T EXPECT 100S AND 1000S

WilburIsSomePig · 09/08/2014 08:20

I am very impressed that you have resurrected a zombie thread about sprinkles, it's such an important issue! Grin

Secretblackandmidnighthag · 09/08/2014 08:23

Grin with CAPSLOCK RAGE and everything!

Bloody brilliant thread!

Love hundreds and thousands, hate sprinkles. Sprinkles just don't do it for me, they're not crunchy.

Where do people stand on silver balls? Weren't allowed in my house as a child as they were dearer. Felt naughty whenever I had them at my friend's house!

Lala5 · 09/08/2014 08:45

mare 4am sprinkle rage - post-pub by any chance? Grin

yesyouare · 09/08/2014 08:48

yabu , im with your dp , sprinkles are softer , hundreds and thousands are hard .

WilburIsSomePig · 09/08/2014 08:54

Ha ha ha ha yes Secret this is clearly VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

WilburIsSomePig · 09/08/2014 08:56

Oh no Lala, silver balls are the height of luxury, my mum covered her cakes with Dream Topping, the balls would have looked totally out of place!

I've just seen Nigella decorate some fairy cakes with gold balls. I had no idea such a thing existed.

DurhamDurham · 09/08/2014 09:01

I know that I am late to this conversation but can I tell you that on my last trifle I put two, yes two, whole bags of crunchie nuggets on the top and it has now taken place in the culinary stuff of dreams that the family talk about.

I did have toothache for a few days afterwards but it was so worth it Grin

ouryve · 09/08/2014 09:03

Some are long and some are small and dotty. I can't remember which ones qualify as hundreds and thousands, though.

Tanith · 09/08/2014 09:23

Grin thebody

My Granny, who was the Oracle when it came to cooking, always called the little strands hundreds and thousands.

Vermicelli is a pasta, surely?!

There's also an Agatha Christie story from the 1920s that describes a murder committed by trifle :)

CarbeDiem · 09/08/2014 10:59

Ah I love 100's and 1000's and sprinkles. My adult children look at me like this Hmm if I decorate cakes with them now though.
I have small nieces so still sometimes get my fix :)
