....are the same bloody things, DP informs me I have brought the wrong thing as he wanted 1000s and 1000s on the trifle and I have got sprinkles.

I think he wants to wear the bloody trifle

Ah, but if you look on wikipedia it says that American and Elglish usage is different and Dr Oetker are American and therefore wrong

GreenEggsAndNichts · 13/05/2012 23:34

Shock Dr Oetker are German! It's all the other boxed baking crap that's American. Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines etc.

I wasn't saying I was right, I was just commenting to something mentioned upthread about how we call them in my part of the US. Other regions use different terms, like jimmies, but thought I'd not wander off on too much of a tangent.

However, my comment about the bastard silver balls is not up for debate. 100% true. Grin

PestoPenguin · 13/05/2012 23:41

Oh yeah Blush

Gentleness · 13/05/2012 23:43

Silver balls are soft now and taste faintly lemony.

trixymalixy · 13/05/2012 23:46

The little coloured balls are 100s and thousands. Sprinkes are longer.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 13/05/2012 23:55

Silver balls are soft now Shock

I might reconsider my position.

fluffypillow · 14/05/2012 00:02

100's and 1000's = coloured balls
sugar strands = coloured strands
sprinkles = NOT British, American.

I'd use glace cherries though.....yum Grin

I shall show DP this thread Grin

OK-I´m now going to go for 100s &1000s for the "balls" & chocolate vermicelli & coloured vermicelli for the "sticks".

On the grounds that sprinkles is just too twee and I don´t like it

Molehillmountain · 14/05/2012 07:44

There has been some wheeler dealering in the world of cake decorations I think. A few years ago and I'm sure dr oetker was not the dominant force he is today! My cupboard is awash with his work now!

PestoPenguin · 14/05/2012 13:20

Molehillmountain -I think you are right. I am wondering who manufactured the hundreds and thousands of my 80s childhood which were definitely tiny sticks

Googling has thus far revealed nothing useful.

ChippyMinton · 14/05/2012 17:16

Sprinkle-related trivia:

There was a brief hiatus about 5 years ago (by my reckoning) when all the Supercook baking stuff was gradually rebranded as Dr Oetker. I suspect this apparently more up-market name has contributed to the cupcake-bunting culture.

Vermicelli - yy that's what chocolate sprinkles were called when I was younger.

Any Dutch folk around to confirm the existence of that wholesome breakfast recipe - Bread & Butter and Sprinkles?

fluffiphlox · 14/05/2012 17:23

Dr Oetker and his medicinal cake decorations.

headfairy · 14/05/2012 17:25

I don't know the difference between 100s and 1000s and sprinkles, but I can tell you both are a complete bastard to clean up off the floor when you drop a whole container full.

AbsofAwesomeness · 14/05/2012 17:33

I can't comment either, but I know that they turn your finger red when you repeatedly stick your finger into them and lick them off, despite all being different colours.

marshmallowpies · 14/05/2012 17:41

So that's what happened to Supercook products...Supercook was such an 80's brand!

Was delighted to find that Tate & Lyle still make the little orange & lemon slices which are just right for putting on fairy cakes. I adore them even more than 100's and 1000's.

Silver balls are rank, though...always taste stale to me.

Pandemoniaa · 14/05/2012 19:00

Silver balls are lovely but only on Christmas cakes.

Got to say that I'd be deeply disappointed to receive sprinkles instead of hundreds and thousands. Sprinkles are what you get on suspiciously cheap fairy cakes or nasty hot chocolate drinks at fetes.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 14/05/2012 19:05

Grate some chocolate on it and be done with it. Grin

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/05/2012 19:22

When I was younger there used to be a boxd cake mix called Rainbow Suprise. Inside there was a little sachet of sprinkles that were really brightly coloured and you could sprinkle them into the cake mix before cooking and they would produce little multi coloured splodges that looked really pretty when you cut the cake.

Wonder if they still do that cake mix?

But yes 100's 1000's are little balls.

"Any Dutch folk around to confirm the existence of that wholesome breakfast recipe - Bread & Butter and Sprinkles?"

Well I´m not Dutch, but many years ago I visited a pen friend there & we had <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?q=chocolate+vermicelli+on+bread&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=fh2&sa=X&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1366&bih=664&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=5IW7f0_-z17eWM:&imgrefurl=www.21food.com/products/chocolate-vermicelli-dark-285602.html&docid=PHJ15DAMY6MbOM&imgurl=img.21food.com/20110609/product/1305708689984.jpg&w=640&h=800&ei=smWxT83oEJDwsgbEr8GwBA&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=653&sig=113154146177469131116&page=1&tbnh=155&tbnw=133&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0,i:76&tx=81&ty=79" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this for breakfast.

Not Dutch but have witnessed Dutch folks eating chocolate sprinkles on bread for brekkie. DH used to live there and has also seen it.

trixymalixy · 14/05/2012 21:50

I've had chocolate sprinkles on bread and butter in Holland.

cambridgeferret · 14/05/2012 21:51

I'm getting hungry now.

RabidAnchovy · 15/05/2012 11:44

Might do DP a sprinkle sandwich for lunch Grin
