More importantly has he put jelly in the trifle?

AllYoursBabooshka · 13/05/2012 17:59

Yes, sprinkles are sugar strands and hundreds & thousands are tiny coloured balls.

We always had sprinkles when I was growing up so as an adult I rebelled and always buy 100's and 1000's instead! They are so tiny & dinky and somehow more fun than sprinkles!

LadyBabsFlashesHerFanjo · 13/05/2012 18:02

Agree with you Rabid Grin

yellowvan · 13/05/2012 18:03

all hundreds and thousands are sprinkles but not all sprinkles are hundreds and thousands. hth :)

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 18:15

It just dawned on me that the op made a pudding today (hats off for that in the first place) that requires at least three processes to make. Whatever the topping is called he should be wiser than to criticise or a lifetime of yoghurt or fruit for pudding might follow.

Blatherskite · 13/05/2012 18:38

Yellowvan has it!

Sprinkles is a catch all name for tiny bits of sugar to sprinkle on things.

The tiny balls are 100s & 1000s, the longer ones are Sugar strands and also come in chocolate flavour.

hackmum · 13/05/2012 18:49

"The tiny balls are 100s & 1000s, the longer ones are Sugar strands and also come in chocolate flavour."

No! I don't think so, and neither do lots of people on this thread! Lots of us think that the tiny coloured strands are 100s and 1000s, and the little balls are, er, something else. (Though the OP seems to think it's the other way round.)

When I was in Australia a few years ago we went to a restaurant where we were served a dessert that had little coloured strands on top. The waitress referred to them as 100s and 1000s and seemed quite disappointed that we recognised the term - she thought it was a purely Australian thing.

hackmum · 13/05/2012 18:51

Although, then again, I may be wrong. (Hedges bets.)

diddl · 13/05/2012 18:58

I always thought that coloured "sticks" are 100s & 1000s, coloured "balls" are sprinkles & chocolate "stick" are vermicelli.

MrsPlugThePlumber · 13/05/2012 19:02

Hundreds and thousands are little coloured balls.

Vermicelli are colourful strands, also available in chocolate.

Both are "sprinkles".

MrsPlugThePlumber · 13/05/2012 19:03

Ah, x-post didl :)

Gentleness · 13/05/2012 19:04

All sprinkly things are sprinkles.

Hundreds and thousands are teeny tiny balls.

I think they're nicer than strands and I'd be peeved if my creative vision was thus ruined.

PestoPenguin · 13/05/2012 19:07

The hundreds and thousands I had as a child were tiny multicoloured sticks.

The ones labelled as hundreds and thousands in the shops now are little balls Hmm.

More importantly, WTF happened to Ice Magic?

leguminous · 13/05/2012 19:11

Hang on, little balls ARE hundreds and thousands. Aren't they? I just bought some sprinkles in Tesco and they are little strands - the hs & ts were right next to them on the shelf and they were little balls.

I am going with the wisdom of Dr Oetker in this instance.

Molehillmountain · 13/05/2012 19:13

Pesto-I loved ice magic-but melted chocolate poured over ice cream not a bad substitute. Fewer yummy additives though Wink

PestoPenguin · 13/05/2012 19:14

I found a recipe Grin. Now where on earth to buy coconut oil...

HazeltheMcWitch · 13/05/2012 19:26

Pesto, you can get coconut oil form Holland and barrett - or from most Asian grocers. My big Tesco has it in the Asian section...

RabidAnchovy · 13/05/2012 19:32

Well the trifle (and what ever the little coloured bits on top were) has been eaten Grin

Looks like I have Dr Oetker on my side hackmum. Ner ner ne ner ner Grin

sugar strands - looking very strand-y hundreds and thousands - little balls

catyloopylou · 13/05/2012 20:34

I agree with Dr Oetker - 100s and 1000s are teeny balls and dye custard or runny icing.

We only ever had chocolate sprinkles - the little sticks - so I don't know if they came in different colours too.

toofattorun · 13/05/2012 21:04

Oh my oh my! Ice Magic. I still crave that to this day.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 13/05/2012 21:19

Am American, I say sprinkles and I mean those little things that look like dashes: - - -

Hundreds and thousands are the things that look like dots: ...

I love sprinkles, loathe hundreds and thousands.

For whatever that is worth. :) I suspect my love for sprinkles is from the soft-serve ice cream cones my grandfather used to buy for me. Vanilla with rainbow sprinkles, every time.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 13/05/2012 21:21

Oh and the little bastard silver balls should never be on anything, ever.
