I didn't put a "smile" on his facebook comment - petty or does he have a point??

It's my birthday today. Last night was a faff of a night as DS cut his head open and I had to take him to A&E after an 11pm finish party. By time I got home from there it was getting on for 1am. Kids in bed - I'm still wide awake I get in bed with a cup of tea and my laptop and go on facebook.

As it was past midnight, a couple of messages wishing me a happy birthday had already appeared. I began to reply to them individually like this:

Ex boyfriend - "happy birthday! x" reply - "thank you! :-) x"
Friend - "Happy birthday hunny xx" reply - "thanks! xx"
ex sister-in-law "Happy birthday old one! xx" reply - "haha thank you! xx"
Friend who now lives in America "Happy happy birthday! :-)" reply - "thank you! x"
dp then posts "happy birthday 'rose picture made up of symbols etc' xx" and at this point DS comes in to say his head is still hurting. I was in the middle of replying to DP at the time and quickly type "thank you x"

Anyway, DP then went in a massive huff saying I hadn't "smiled" on his comment like I had on my ex's comment, my reply to him was "basic" in comparison!!!

FFS, petty or does he have a point?? do the "smiles" etc really mean something to most people?

He is being ridiculous

noblegiraffe · 13/05/2012 13:23

He's being a tit, but then he went to some effort to make the rose pic and is just a bit miffed that you didn't rave about it.

BonnieBumble · 13/05/2012 13:24

Oh dear. How old is your dp, 5? It's your birthday and he is making you feel bad. Tell him to grow up.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/05/2012 13:24

Does your DP think that's actually meaningful? Shock Tell him that you only put one kiss as opposed to two for friend, ex-SIL... Grin

FB is supposed to be lighthearted... yikes!

DialMforMummy · 13/05/2012 13:25

Petty to me. So glad I don't use Facebook.

FallenCaryatid · 13/05/2012 13:25

Was he in the same house at the time?
Is he aware that your son's head is hurting?
Is your DH emotionally around 12?

kittyandthefontanelles · 13/05/2012 13:26

Looks to me like your ex got the best reply overall. Facebook is evil

monkeymoma · 13/05/2012 13:26

he's just in a piss because he's left all his homework till sunday, he knows he should get it over with on friday so he can enjoy his weekends Wink

fluffiphlox · 13/05/2012 13:26

Is he old enough for a FB account? :) (He can have that one!)

hopenglory · 13/05/2012 13:27

Check that he hasn't reverted to a 14 year old when you weren't looking! Presumably you are in the same house as him so you can thank him in person

-or tell him to grow the fuck up

ShutUpMeg · 13/05/2012 13:30

no we weren't in the same house. we don't like together thank fuck

Demote him then, just 'P', not 'DP'... put that on FB, with a 'smile'. Wink

fuzzysnout · 13/05/2012 13:37

It sounds pathetic, but facebook does that to us all. Essentially he put the most effort into his message but you put the least effort into his reply. He would be U to make a scene about it, however YAB to not see why he might feel a teensy bit hurt though he shouldn't mention it again unless he wants to be a complete tit

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 13/05/2012 13:38

Send him to the naughty step and confiscate his X box privileges.

bronze · 13/05/2012 13:39

it just looks like you were getting more tired of replying. Tell him he should have got in first

QuickLookBusy · 13/05/2012 13:39

What a twat.

Honestly it is your birthday. You spent last night in casualty and you are wasting energy on this twunt who has had a massive huff.

Tell him to go away and stay there.

Happy birthday and I hope you have some nice plans for later.

GrahamTribe · 13/05/2012 13:41

He's being an ass. I just hope to god that this manchild DP of yours is not your son's father.

MissB - and by x box you mean...? :o

What a knob though. Sometimes I put one kiss (or even none at all!) on a text to DH, doesn't mean I love him any less than when I put ten Hmm

giraffesCantGoPotholing · 13/05/2012 13:45

wtf

kittyandthefontanelles · 13/05/2012 13:47

Grahamtribe- I just hope to god that this manchild DP of yours is not your son's father. ??????? What a dreadful thing to say

ilovesooty · 13/05/2012 13:48

What a fuss about nothing on his part.

ShutUpMeg · 13/05/2012 13:50

I did actually delete it after he whinged and added a smile Hmm

It now reads "thanks :-) xx" - he still wasn't happy and announced that he hated my ex. whatever dude!
