To find it hard to believe that there are a lot of women out there who aren't what you'd term "old" who have to wear Tenna Lady panty liners?

I've just seen an advert for Tenna Lady Panty Liners. The woman featured in the add is a very glam woman, who looks to be in her early 30s, who keeps saying "oops", which I assume is a little euphemism for involuntary incontenence.

Am I just being naive about the extent of this problem among women under the age of 80, or is it just because they don't want to feature an 80+ year old woman in their advert?

I could not agree more PenguinArmy.... it should be mentioned as school and its frequency / causes etc not put down to just being overweight !

my GP and consultant hardly asked any history because what they saw first was overweight.... not the 3 babies ( large) , repeated URTI's that would lead to 6 or more weeks at a time coughing (so severe I have broken ribs) and heavy lifting.

Young women can then consider pelvic floor exercises from an early age and as normal as any other type of exercise ..... and perhaps if it gets talked about more then it will cease to be the subject of much sniggering / embarrassment.

The front is fine for me. The back, not so much Grin

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 31/07/2013 13:17

that is, I have a rectocele, not that I frequently shit myself!!

Squitten · 31/07/2013 13:18

I'm 30, pregnant with DC3 and I've had a cough for about 3wks. I am now a Tenna customer!

Justforlaughs · 31/07/2013 13:21

I have to admit OP that you are not alone in being surprised how many younger women this affects. It's not a case of being smug, it's more a case of "if it hasn't affected YOU then why should you know". Reading this thread makes me feel very lucky (not smug) that I have not been really affected by this (although I did need to run to the toilet the other day after drinking 3 pints of water in less than a hour and then getting on a trampoline! Blush). I like the idea of teaching pelvic floor exercises to school girls.

Rummikub · 31/07/2013 13:23

Anyone else find themselves doing pelvic floor exercises as reading this thread... Hold 5..4..3..2..1.. And relax..

Justforlaughs · 31/07/2013 13:25

Definitely Rummikub but then I do actually quite often use the time I spend on here for this - gives me a valid excuse Wink as I am not wasting time! Grin

Fishandjam · 31/07/2013 13:25

I'm almost 40 and dread getting a cough or the inevitable round of hayfever. I was OK after DC1 but DC2 has put the tin lid on my pelvic floor. (Actually, a tin lid would be quite useful.) I do my Kegels regularly but even so, I can't stop leaking during a sneezing fit.

MurderOfGoths · 31/07/2013 13:27

ZOMBIE THREAD ALERT!

bulletwithbutterflywings · 31/07/2013 13:27

I had a 10 and a half pound baby via forceps and had a catheter in (that made weeing very strange for a long time) and have never had this problem. I think it's just luck of the draw whether or not it happens to you. I have never been particularly careful about doing kegels.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 31/07/2013 13:31

Dammit, I'm normally really good at spotting Z-threads! Blush

BigKidsMadeMeDoIt · 31/07/2013 14:08

I know its a zombie thread but I just wanted to say to all the ladies who are embarrassed about buying continence products, please don't be. I work in boots and if all other branches are the same as mine, the person serving you won't even bat an eyelid. lots of people buy them, every day. you aren't the only one. (and you can always order online)

Rummikub · 31/07/2013 14:18

Oo my 1st zombie thread! Well least I got a bit of a workout..

Souredstoneshasasouredpebble · 31/07/2013 14:24

I've used them since I had my first dc at 21.

Morning sickness and incontinence don't mix

ComposHat · 31/07/2013 15:16

my drip of an aunt wears them 'just in case' and my mum was taking her to a funeral and my aunt spent the entire service loudly complaining about being thirsty
To which my mum hissed in her ear.
'Have a suck on your Tena lady and shut the fuck up and remember where you are.'

ILivebytheRiver · 31/07/2013 15:27

Does anyone else get incredibly tense and angry doing pelvic floors - I HATE DOING THEM. I just end up all clenched and cross and want to punch someone! Is this normal?!!

PaulSmenis · 31/07/2013 16:55

It's terrible that health professionals in the UK seem to treat incontinence as being part of a woman's life.

A friend who was visiting from France said that she was shocked by the sheer volume of incontinence products on sale here and wanted to know wtf was going on.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 31/07/2013 17:06

Also doing pelvic floor exercises here now!

What I find really sad is that provision for post birth trauma seems to vary so widely across the country.

I had a 7 hour labour, just gas and air, and thought I was home and dry. Except that DD got stuck right at the very end, resulting in an episiotomy, then a ventouse, then a 3rd degree tear (3b, so pretty serious). I spent her first afternoon in theatre with a spinal block being sewn back together. My body just hadn't been able to dilate quickly enough, apparently.

However, what was amazing about the whole thing was that I happened to (just by chance - NHS) end up with the top surgeon at the hospital, who had recently set up a pilot pelvic floor clinic. She was amazing and I wrote to thank her afterwards. I can honestly say that despite the falling apart state my nether regions were in, I have NOT had problems subsequently - and trust me, after that lot, I expected to! She stitched me up fine, I'm currently PG with DC2 and she advised against a c-section with any subsequent pregnancies.

Because of this pilot, I had unlimited physio appointments, various consultations with this Dr and I am just so grateful that, despite the trauma of surgery at the time, I was able to see this lady. I posted about her on another thread earlier, as at the time (2 years back) she would accept referrals from around the country. I'd also like to add that she was adamant that people of my/our mum's generation should not be suffering with leaks and wearing Tena Lady etc. PM me if you want her details - I am so aware that things could have turned out differently and that they didn't is testament to her skill.

Aged 40, unstable bladder for past 3 years due to chronic illness and still unstable even with meds. And yes, it makes me feel about 85 :P

OK, being stupid, what's a ZOMBIE THREAD?

Mochachocalatte · 31/07/2013 18:27

How many people on here can say that post-children, they have never once experienced involuntary leakage??

fuzzypicklehead · 31/07/2013 18:35

Zombie thread is one from a million years ago that's been revived for unknown reasons!

Justforlaughs · 31/07/2013 18:40

Thank you fuzzy I've been caught a few times.
I've found a few times recently that my mumsnet page has loaded an old one and all the threads are from months ago, no idea why.
