To find it hard to believe that there are a lot of women out there who aren't what you'd term "old" who have to wear Tenna Lady panty liners?

I've just seen an advert for Tenna Lady Panty Liners. The woman featured in the add is a very glam woman, who looks to be in her early 30s, who keeps saying "oops", which I assume is a little euphemism for involuntary incontenence.

Am I just being naive about the extent of this problem among women under the age of 80, or is it just because they don't want to feature an 80+ year old woman in their advert?

after 6 normal births...i never suffered this problem

until last year when i had a kidney stone....oh my a tena lady was not sufficient..i was using a pack of sanitary towels a day for over a month..it was horrible.....not a nice thing for ppl to suffer from whateva ya ageSad

EdlessAllenPoe · 12/05/2012 21:32

i suspect some teen incontinence could be linked to school loos being horrendous scary places making kids hold it in all day...

BananasInBloomers · 12/05/2012 21:32

Its not just like holding a wee mid flow, you have to really feel yourself lifting off the gusset of your knickers. I had physio after DC3 and I am proud to say I can sneeze, cough, bounce on the trampoline and my bladder behaves itself.

Another problem some women suffer is fecal incontinence.

Perriwinkle · 12/05/2012 21:32

Happydogsaddog maybe the growing problem of obesity among adolescents has got something to do with it? Carrying extra wight generally (pregnancy related or not) can put a strain on the pelvic floor too. It seems that pregnancy on top of carrying too much weight generally can exacerbate a problem that's already there.

I suppose we'll never truly know the extent of this problem across all age groups due to the embarrassment factor.

I never said anything until I was almost thirty.

Spiritedwolf · 12/05/2012 21:42

I had some problems when I was at my most overweight pre-pregnancy, at its worst during long colds with all the coughing/sneezing. I lost weight and it got better, but had to start wearing pads again during pregnancy quite early on especially when I had a lot of sickness.

I'm 26, so its not just old ladies or after pregnancy. I gave my friend (also not a mum, and a similar age) who is normally fine, a packet after she confided that she had an accident whilst coughing when she had a chest infection. She was very grateful. I don't think she'd have thought to buy a packet herself, it is rather embarassing when you assume its just for older women.

5'3 had 9.5lb DS via vagina delivery - result? Crossing my legs before I coughed or sneezed! Had a TVT which helped but still feel safer with a Tena liner? And no, you won't catch me on a trampoline

KitCat26 · 12/05/2012 21:43

After forceps and a 3rd degree tear with my first I had an ELCs with my second to prevent permanent double incontinence Sad.

I had no problems during my first pregnancy. Issues only arose after labour and in my second pregnancy. Thankfully, no major problems since c-section but wouldn't want to jump on a trampoline or jog, or have a cough for more than a day, or sneeze, or leave it too late for dashing to the loo!

Shagmundfreud · 12/05/2012 21:44

A shoulder dystocia with an 11lb baby, a forceps birth with a 9 and a half pounder and a 36 hour labour with a 9 lb baby have left me with urge incontinence.

It doesn't trouble me enough to do anything about it yet.

Interestingly the thing that has made a real difference to my ability to control my bladder has been regular short stints on a mini trampoline. If I kept it up I reckon It'd be 'cured' within a month.

zadigeist · 12/05/2012 21:44

I've had two kids and fine on the trampoline - have never had it even straight after birth. But I know plenty of women complain.
May not be so lucky after these twins make it out... Wink

singingsoprano · 12/05/2012 21:44

It is a problem that is not really talked about. After 3 vaginal deliveries, my pelvicfloor has had it. It took over 2 years of refererals, physio etc to be correctly diagnosed with urge incontinence. I now have Botox injections every 10 months under GA and no longer have to wear pads all the time.
Please seek help, as we don't have to put up with it.

Spiritedwolf · 12/05/2012 21:46

EAP, I had some problems as a teen too, definately made worse by not wanting to use school loos that often didn't have locks on them and felt intimated by the girls who hung out there.

porcamiseria · 12/05/2012 21:50

erm try having a 9.5 lb baby ! tena lady all the way unfortunately

porcamiseria · 12/05/2012 21:51

that interesting shagmu

I just would feel embarassed if neighbours saw me!

Dropdeadfred · 12/05/2012 21:57

I have had 3 babies and the last one was 9lb 8 - my pelvic floor has never been a problem - no leaking here . I feel lucky now ( not smug honestly!!) but appalled that do many people at a young age have resigned themselves to this problem

mercibucket · 12/05/2012 22:04

I had physio after ds1 and ds2. French system. Everyone does. Soooooo much better than giving them tenalady

notforlong · 12/05/2012 22:07

I had a horrendous birth and had some problems. I had a repair op and physio.

I think people should seek medical help, not resign them selves to living with the problem.

EdlessAllenPoe · 12/05/2012 22:08

i'd say my worst period of continence was working in a job where it was difficult to take breaks and early twenties so drinking plenty booze (so, vulnerable to UTIs, unable to drink water/wee often)

i never considered tena lady as an option.

TheSydenhamSet · 12/05/2012 22:10

i'm 31 and can't get on a trampoline.

PoppyWearer · 12/05/2012 22:10

Am late 30s, have had two DCs, no amount of Pilates could save me, have been buying Always Envive (better than Tena) for 18 months.

Am secretly hoping the gynae refers me for surgery so it gets sorted, even if it means a hysterectomy. Physio not cutting it!

PoppyWearer · 12/05/2012 22:13

Apparently the death knell for many women is having baby DC2 at the same time as potty training DC1. You take DC1 to the toilet frequently and do so yourself to set an example...train your body not to wait...you know the rest.

DharmaBumpkin · 12/05/2012 22:14

Another one with a 3C tear, very nearly a full 4. Temporarily had double incontinence, luckily had an automatic physio referral... Now happily play on the trampoline with my two :)

Really, seek advice from a gp or physio... I think I'm better now than I was pre DC.

misslinnet · 12/05/2012 22:17

I went to an nct sale today, and they were handing out sample packs of tena panty liners in the carrier bags.
