to think that the keeping of dogs for domestic purposes should be banned.

That?s it really. I am sick to death of having to watch my feet to make sure I don?t accidentally tread in dog muck left to steam by some selfish, lazy dog owner. I resent not being able to take 2yo DS to the park directly opposite my house because it?s used as a dog exercise ground and you can?t play toddler football without the ball and toddler falling into said dog muck. I hate that every time we go to the slightly nicer park there?s at least one dog without a lead who decides to come and sniff DS and that while he backs away the owner stands there laughing that ?he?s only being friendly?. I loathe and detest the particularly ?friendly? dogs who lick DS while I drag him away, probably just after eating another dog?s poo or a dead rat or some other disgusting thing they just found. I have personally seen the scars left on a young child by a ?friendly? dog turning savage and ripping the toddler?s cheek off. The problem of people getting bored of their dogs and dumping them in rescue centres is sickening. The stories of dogs being bred to fight, being neglected, being bred for ?beauty? despite the ?beautiful? characteristics causing the animals pain and suffering are beyond belief.

IMO domestic dog owners as a general class have proved that they are irresponsible and selfish. Fear of treading in dog poo on a pavement or in a park is common to everyone and I am so, so sick of people blaming it on a tiny minority. Domestic dog owners can?t be trusted to be responsible so they shouldn?t have them, end of. People should only be allowed to keep dogs for working purposes ? guide dogs, sniffer dogs, police dogs, sheep dogs etc. - if they are licensed.

YANBU, I would ban them too.

GrahamTribe · 11/05/2012 22:53

In which case I apologise AThing. :)

I have "a thing" Grin about Ireland's behaviour towards dogs and I clearly let my feelings about it cloud what you actually said.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 11/05/2012 22:54

Can't be arsed to read 15 pages.

Obviously YABU but I sympathise.

ThreadWatcher · 11/05/2012 22:56

OP YABU

I am not a fan of most dogs.
There is loads of dog poo on our local pavements
I hate it when random dogs rush up to me, especially when the owners say "ooh he wont hurt you, he is a soft as butter" - maybe he is but I dont want to find out!

But ban all domestic dog ownership NOOOOO - just irresponsible dog owners!

Besides when my dc are older Im keen to have a dog of my own :)

AstronomyDomine · 11/05/2012 23:11

My dog is well loved, well looked after, all her shots are up to date, she doesn't need to be dewormed or defleaed because she has regular dose of tablets to prevent the need. We NEVER leave her poo behind after any walk and she's never allowed in a child's play area or sandpit because that's just not right, you know, my being a sensible dog owner. Oh, and just so you know, if we lived in a fantasy world and your ridiculous wish became law and my beloved dog had to be removed from my life,I'd hunt you down. No really.
But I do agree dog-shit dodging is fucking annoying.

MuddyDogs · 11/05/2012 23:13

OK. I've had a glass of Wine so I'm going to say what I really think. Threads like this absolutely baffle me. Where the hell do you live that this is such a problem? I have two dogs and I walk them multiple times throughout the day. I always, always, always have many bags stuffed into pockets, tied to leashes, in my bag. I ALWAYS PICK UP. Guess what? All the dog owners I meet in our pretty, leafy town DO THE SAME THING. It's called being a "responsible citizen" and having pride in the place that you live and good moral fibre. I walk through forest trails, on sidewalks, to school with my children and into town. I've NEVER seen dog poop lying around, much less trodden in it (nor have my children). If someone was seen not picking up after their pet they would be CRUCIFIED. Then they would be hung, drawn and quartered....and they'd never do it again.
Get a grip and consider the PEOPLE you are living amongst, not the dogs.

NowThenWreck · 11/05/2012 23:15

Yeah, dogs are lovely. Man's best friend.
Although, if you died, and no-one was around, they would eat your fetid corpse.
Good companions though.

BupcakesandCunting · 11/05/2012 23:15

I am going to do a photo diary of My Dog Shit Journey. It is clear that the dog owners don't believe that some of us have to hop over steaming piles of shite every morning. I threw DS's wellies away last week because the thought of scraping dog cack from in the grooves of the soles made my stomach feel like crying. Mainly, the main dog shit is down a long alleyway we have to use. They do it there because it's not a main road and they won't be seen, the filthy articles.

BupcakesandCunting · 11/05/2012 23:17

Grin NowThen.

Actually, if I see someone letting Mutley shit on the pavement, I am going to follow them home and curl one out on their doorstep. Then knock on the door and run off shouting "Arf arf!"

ThreadWatcher · 11/05/2012 23:20

Muddydogs - come and visit my town.

I am seriously considering creating a load of cocktail sticks with little flags that say things like "My owner is irresponsible"

If there is no dog poo all over the pavements near you, lucky you but our pavements are decorated in it :(

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 11/05/2012 23:22

Muddydogs you live in a naice area clearly. I live in a bit of a shithole, literally. Frankly I am sick of wading through shit.

thecook · 11/05/2012 23:22

Bupcakes - Lol. I believe you love. No need for a diary!
Good idea though. Sometimes I want to shove the shit in their faces! What makes me laugh though is how they boast how clean their flats are.

MuddyDogs · 11/05/2012 23:23

I think I've identified the problem. Dogs that poop on pavements probably are used to doing their biz on concrete because they live in council highrises and don't ever get taken to parks or green areas or have back gardens. Perhaps we should focus on banning dog ownership amongst white trash. Obviously they can't afford poo bags. There you go, OP. Problem solved Grin.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 11/05/2012 23:25

Ah. I see. A reverse class issue. Very clever.

ThreadWatcher · 11/05/2012 23:27

MD - Did you read that before you posted? Cos its actually offensive (to me at least!)

There are no highrises (council or otherwise) within 20 miles of here. Plenty of green space. People can easily afford poo bags, they have gardens.
People local to me are NOT trash (white or otherwise).

They are however selfish. Selfishness is not exclusive to any particular class, race or culture!

Latara · 11/05/2012 23:30

YABU. Dogs are great pets providing they are well treated & trained. They are usually rewarding & faithful companions. Taking dogs out for regular walks is good for the owners' health & social lives - as well as for their dogs. I've noticed that there's minimal dog poo on the paths & pavements in areas with plenty of dog poo bins.

There's a local wooded hill that's popular with dog walkers but there are no poo bins & the ground is covered in dog poo so that children can't run about without stepping in it.

In a ideal world people would bag up their dog's poo & dispose of it when they get home. I would do that if i had a dog. But few people will carry a bag full of shit on a warm day when they are miles from the nearest dog poo bin... so the council could introduce poo bins that suit the natural environment.

My cat wishes to add: ''i shit in the neighbours gardens hahaha but my owner is a fool who thinks i only use my tray..'' oh crap...& everyone knows my cat is the only Persian round here... she's so grounded!!!

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 11/05/2012 23:31

Threadwatcher I think she was being ironic Grin

droves · 11/05/2012 23:32

Op yabu ...you can't ban dogs ...what about blind dogs and therapy dogs ?

But I do think all dogs should be muzzled when outside and always kept on a lead in public.

Potential owners should be given a dog test before they are allowed to have one ...to make sure they understand how to care for and look after the dog properly. Nothing short of cruel to see a large excersise needing dog getting " let out for a pee " .

For example ...my lovely , but dim friend bought a collie puppy ...because it was fluffy and cute. No doubt she loves that dog , seriously adores it , calls it her baby Hmm .
A year later she has a dog that needs several hours of excersise a week that she cannot fully provide ( due to work commitments) and is left with a bored , under exercised animal who shreds her house to bits and " bounces " on people who visit .She wonders what happened .

What she did wrong was buy a breed that was designed for working on farms ...she would have been better with a tiny breed and lessons on how to look after a dog properly .

About dog poo everywhere ....you will always get lazy people who will always be lazy . What worries me is that if the owner is too lazy to pick up their dogs mess , they're probably too lazy to provide the dog with everything it needs to stay healthy . Sad .

ThreadWatcher · 11/05/2012 23:32

Really? Oh well sorry if so

Blame my comment on my possible aspergers and therefore sometimes I cant spot irony Blush

MuddyDogs · 11/05/2012 23:33

Do it Bupcakes. It could be a new quiche, Sporn stylee. "Dog poo I have seen or trodden in".

GrahamTribe · 11/05/2012 23:36

droves, I couldn't agree more. If only people would think and research before buying or adopting a dog. Collies are amongst the worst and the most vulnerable, people think they're easy to train because they're seen to work so well on TV shows about farming when the reality is that they're highly active dogs and the most intelligent, needing a huge amount of exercise and mental stimulation. Your friend would have done far better to adopt a greyhound.

MuddyDogs · 11/05/2012 23:38

Sorry Thread. 'Twas irony, yes Blush.

Good point, Latara. We do have lots of bins in our town. A variety that are suited to neighbourhoods, trails, town etc. so it's easy to dispose of dog waste and is quickly picked up by the municipal garbage trucks. I've been known to walk miles with steaming bags though. Sometimes there aren't any cans nearby.

Lara2 · 11/05/2012 23:38

Agree with the not picking up after your dog, but ban domestic ownership?? Seriously, what are you on OP? Why not ban all the shitty parents from having children - you know, the ones that the rest of us have to pick up the pieces after?

MeDented · 11/05/2012 23:38

Not read whole thread and think your solution would be unfair on the many responsible dog owners BUT I do sympathise, it's not just the poo, I have had someone's dog jump up at me covering my jeans in muddy paw prints and all over my suede boots, another dog jumped all over me and baby ds when we were sat on a picnic blanket on a beach, and he was wet and soggy out of the sea and trampled over my head as I tried to protect ds AND another dog jumped all over DH dirtying his pale trousers one day when we were on our way out - we had literally just come out of front door and walked to car at kerb, but dog was not on a lead and owner too far away to restrain it. If you like dogs that's fine but I don't see why I should have to put up with this!

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 11/05/2012 23:39

"Possible aspergers"?

A grown adult using the phrase white trash?
