out of the people i know, the working class ones have spotless homes.

the middleclass ones seem alot more messier and nowhere near as spick and span.
they also tend to dress their children in odd socks etc.

anyone else noticed this?

YABU

What a random op

BumpingFuglies · 09/05/2012 18:08

Oh tethers, do be serious. That's what the bath if for. We're talking home cleanliness here, not personal hygiene.

Bumdrop · 09/05/2012 18:08

What about the out of work ing class with the fridges and the old bangers on the front "lawn".
They look quite shiny in the sun !

BumpingFuglies · 09/05/2012 18:08

is for, sorry

dovebird · 09/05/2012 18:08

i do actually think it probably stems from doorstep scrubbing, from many years ago, its a sort of deep rooted thing deep in the mind.

FarSideOfFuckingBalloons · 09/05/2012 18:14

Or maybe it stems from, oh I don't know, amazing new ways to stereotype people?

RosieBooBoo · 09/05/2012 18:14

What is with this obsession with 'class' on MN? I actually find it really pathetic and embarassing to read.

TheCountessOlenska · 09/05/2012 18:16

Hee hee - from personal experience with family and in-laws, I think there is some truth to this . . .

I reckon I have classed DH up a bit by getting him to eat olives and pesto and shiz, and he has got me to run the vacuum round a bit more often - trying to turn me into his (very house proud) mother!

My mother definitely does a bit of a Hmm face when she sees me going over the leather couches with a babywipe!

bobbledunk · 09/05/2012 18:17

It's got nothing to do with class and everything to do with individual preference.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 09/05/2012 18:17

Define working class please.

scottishmummy · 09/05/2012 18:20

I've seen hundreds homes
manly and spotless
no class aspect to it at all ime

naughtymummy · 09/05/2012 18:21

Not sure I agree. MIL is UMC her house is spotless and.full of niknaks , makes me want to swing a baseball bat.My DM was far too busy earning a living to keep the house tidy when we were growing up. Probrably LMC rather than WC tho

passivehoovering · 09/05/2012 18:22

Socks! We paint our feet black.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 09/05/2012 18:25

Is it not more a matter of having the self-confidence to not actually give a shit what people are thinking about your messy house/washing on the line/odd socks?

Said self-confidence not being class-specific, but maybe there's a bit of a correlation?

Maybe self-confidence isn't quite the right word...self-assurance?

HillyWallaby · 09/05/2012 18:30

Everyone I have ever known who is, or might be considered by others to be UMC has had shabby furniture (note I said shabby, not shabby chic) and a dusty, slightly cluttered, freezing cold house, and a sort of casual insouciance bordering on slovenliness. And a tiny, tiny telly.

naughtymummy · 09/05/2012 18:36

I think MIL is UMC, freezing house check, tiny telly check. Never having had anything you could.actually define as.aproper job, but nevertheless plenty of inherited wealth check.Dogs.and a preference of them over her grandchildren check.
But her house is immaclate and she worries about crumbs on the floor (gets out a little handheld hoover while we are eating biscuits for example

CrumpettyTree · 09/05/2012 18:43

Yes I have definitely noticed this OP.

catgirl1976 · 09/05/2012 18:45

It's the goats. They graze away at the dirt and clutter and leave the place sparkling.

catgirl1976 · 09/05/2012 18:47

I must change class depending on the day of the week.

If the cleaner has been I am working class.

If she hasn't I am middle class

Got it :)

thebestisyettocome · 09/05/2012 18:47

You are right OP.

LynetteScavo · 09/05/2012 18:48

I have no idea. I have never been into a working class home. I suspect it is because they are sooooo tiny. It can't take long to clean them.

fatherchewylouis · 09/05/2012 18:49

Boulevard said my thoughts but beat me to it.

LynetteScavo · 09/05/2012 18:49

Upper class people have clean homes, because they have house keepers.

Middle class people are the only dirty people.

Shakey1500 · 09/05/2012 18:50

I frequently wear odd socks and my house is a tip some days and so sparkly the other days I could eat my caviar off the marble floor.

catgirl1976 · 09/05/2012 18:51

None of the Upper class people I know have clean homes. It mud, horse shit and dog hair everywhere
