to think people shouldlet a severely disabled little girl get off her school bus and walk across a tight lane to home with her escort without being verbally abused by members of the public?

some of whom are our neighbours Angry

someone has just tried to force her off the lane and back onto the bus ffs.

If I knew who it was I would be reporting them (for what who knows) The escort had to jump in front of her to guard her as the car wasn't going to stop :( it did obviously...maybe they saw the high viz Hmm

as a disclaimer I will say the lane is clear when they start to cross but she is physically disabled, she cannot do quick

no, not next door, someone bloody else. It's not even a built up residential area

Catsmamma · 09/05/2012 16:51

simple....get the bus to block the whole road, ideally any school type bus should not be going anywhere while a passenger is crossing. ....let's see the idiots try and get by then.

Call the transport team and discuss this.

Thumbwitch · 09/05/2012 16:52

Ah, good point catsmamma! yes, get the bus to stop in the middle of the road, much better plan Grin

MrsMuddyPuddles · 09/05/2012 16:53

Call the non-emergency number of the police, and if they are as useful as my local dept you will eventually be able to speak with the right department about getting someone to camp out in your yard while she's crossing we have REGULAR issues with people parking on the pavement If this fails, call your local MP and get them involved.
I am so sorry that you have such shits on your lane :(

WilsonFrickett · 09/05/2012 16:54

I don't normally hold up the US as a bastion of disability rights but it's illegal to overtake a parked school bus over there and I really wish it was the same here. Poor DD and what a fecking nobber. Angry

Thumbwitch · 09/05/2012 16:55

Ooo Wilson - I think it's the same in Australia - it even says it on the back of the bus - no wait, that's when the orange lights are flashing on the back of the bus, not when it's just stopped/parked.

lisaro · 09/05/2012 17:01

I know - I just for some reason got the wrong idea from the OP. I did post again asking if the OP had the number once it was clearer to me.

saintlyjimjams · 09/05/2012 17:16

Actually yes do get the bus to stop in the middle of the road - they are allowed to (ds1's does)

whomovedmychocolate · 09/05/2012 17:21

Have you investigated the joys of squeezy honey on car bonnets OP? Really takes a while for the driver to wash of and pisses them off no end when it's summer and attracts hundreds of flies.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 09/05/2012 17:25

What makes you think they purposefully TRIED TO RUN HER OVER?

That's a bit extreme don't you think? I understand you are upset about this, as anyone would be, but saying that they tried to run her over?

Don't you think it's slightly more possible that they were driving a little too fast, as the vast majority of drivers will have done at some point in their lives, and didn't expect to see your dd in the middle of the road?

You have posted about this before haven't you? I apologise if I'm confusing you with someone else, but if I a thinking of the same poster, I think you need to realise that despite what you want to insist, it is actually not safe for the bus to stop where it does.

2shoes · 09/05/2012 17:27

Freddos Think you are mixing your freds up that one wasn't Fio

Callisto · 09/05/2012 17:27

Can you nag the council for traffic calming measures where the bus stops? If there is a speed bump then at least the feckwits will have to slow down.

There truly are some horrible people in the world.

FioFio · 09/05/2012 17:28

No, I haven't posted about it before Confused

I don't think they were trying to run her over purposely either but I do think as I said in my first post

someone has just tried to force her off the lane and back onto the bus

OP posts:
FioFio · 09/05/2012 17:31

sorry i did say try and run her over in my second post...I was angry, as most people would be if it was their vulnerable dependent too

I FioFio have broken all the rules of an AIBU thread by arguing that i am not being Blush :o

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 09/05/2012 17:33

Fair enough. I apologise again for confusing you with another poster, and I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I hope your dd wasn't too frightened.

2shoes · 09/05/2012 17:33

only cos you are right Fio yanbu
I would get the bus to block the lane , so that she doesn't have to "cross" the road.
that way any speeding twat will have to just wait, any abuse dial 999

mynewpassion · 09/05/2012 17:36

I think you need to talk to the school transport to see if they will allow the escort to hold up a stop sign while crossing the road with your DD. It might look ridiculous but maybe it will prevent harm to her.

In the US, they do have crossing guards to ensure that students safely cross roads by holding up large stop signs or flags with stop signs on them. They also have school busses with stop signs attached to the bus to prevent vehicles from moving until the signs have been folded back into the bus.

FioFio · 09/05/2012 17:36

I do wish people would just slow down and stop rushing at the expense of others quality life tbh, in the main. Some people just cannot do quick, it's not a major catastrophe unless you have been entered for the 100m race for your country at the Olympics, is it?

you can get a big pack of freddos in iceland btw for £1

OP posts:
OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 09/05/2012 17:42

I agree, people should slow down, but I think most of us must have been guilty of creeping over 30mph at some point. I don't think people deliberately mean to endanger others, I think they are probably just wrapped up in what's going on in their own lives. Not that that is an excuse, it sounds like the driver your dd and her assistant encountered today was particularly bad.

Is there any chance the council would put speed bumps in your road, or at least put a sign up or something?

Thanks for the Iceland tip! Thanks I've had a few recommendations for Costco since I've had this name, but my card has expired.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 09/05/2012 17:45

YANBU, some people just can't wait 30, 20, 10 seconds that it would take for somebody to cross a road. They are just so much more busy and important than everyone else you see.

I don't see why the bus driver doesn't just block all the road tbh, I've seen escorted buses do this and in quiet residential streets it doesn't seem to cause any problems at all.

FioFio · 09/05/2012 17:48

I might make my own sign

the council are useless

OP posts:
wannaBe · 09/05/2012 17:48

no yanbu.

yyy to getting the bus to stop in the middle of the lane....

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 09/05/2012 18:17

I find people are remarkably useless at recognising disability sometimes, so their tiny amoeba brains are maybe thinking she is just messing around.

GrimmaTheNome · 09/05/2012 18:27

True, fanjo - they're driving in their own little world and misread what's going on. Same sort of thing with people who whine about being done for speeding. 'Ooh, I didn't spot girl in hi-vis vest. Ooh, I didnt spot sodding great bit yellow box or parked police car'. Hmm If they were 'driving with due care and attention' these things wouldn't happen, would they.
