to wonder why people have to ask what's naff or not?

There are so many threads on here (I know, this is a thread about many a thread) canvassing opinions on whether something is cool or naff. Why can't we all just like what we like and not be worried about what others think?

Currently there are posters questioning whether it's naff to have family portraits on the wall, whether it's okay to have hanging baskets or if it's the done thing to order from Boden. FFS...if you like something, have it! If you want a huge great big canvass of your children and you on your sitting room wall, have it! If you want bright and gaudy plastic hanging baskets, have them. If you see a dress in Boden you actually like, have it. Be your own person and don't worry about what others think.

By MN standing, I am probably Queen of naffness...I have black granite surfaces in my kitchen, brown leather sofas in my sitting room and a vase of twiggy shit. I don't have any pebbles knocking about though....well, apart from on my rockery. Holy shit! I just thought, is my rockery naff or cool? Grin

Hmmmm I don't care whether my choices are considered naff or not by the condescending types that pervade this forum!

As for black granite worktops...I saw some in homebase the other day anbd thought it looked really nice...very sophisticated.

I have a pebble collection in a glass candle holder with different coloured pebbles that I've collected from all over the place...Iona, Pembrokeshire, Sweden, Italy...I like them, I have to live with them......why should anyone else care!?

Enjoy your leather and your rockery! Smile

HeartsJandJ · 09/05/2012 12:49

sausages: collecting pebbles from around the world and displaying them is cool. However buying a pebble display ornament would be naff.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 09/05/2012 12:50

I think it's 'tribal', got to belong and fit somewhere and have likeminded people agreeing. No flaming from me. :)

sugarice · 09/05/2012 12:50

I would love black granite in my kitchen, you lucky spud!

bewitchedandbewildered · 09/05/2012 12:51

Those are the "do you wanna be in my gang" type threads. Child's play. I'm new here, got sucked in by the photos on the wall thread, but learned fast.

sausagesandmarmelade · 09/05/2012 12:51

LOL hearts

squeakytoy · 09/05/2012 12:52

YANBU

I like Per Una, I like MacDonalds, I dont like wine, I think Boden is overpriced crap, and I use Facebook...

Grin

and quite frankly, I dont give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks about it!

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 09/05/2012 12:52

I agree with you OP

I couldn't care less what anyone on here thinks of my choices. It certainly wouldn't occur to me to post on here and ask if it's ok to buy from Boden or order a big canvas pic.

I think lots of people pretend they do or don't do certain things just to fit in with the crowd on here.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/05/2012 12:52

Real leather?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 09/05/2012 12:54

YANBU... Too many people are basically insecure and obsessed with approval-seeking. Can't wipe their own arse unless they're sure they're doing it the accepted 'right way'.

CallMeAl · 09/05/2012 12:54

because they aren't confident in their own choices. Probably atleast a little because they read enough posts about how tacky or whatever things are in the opinion of others and are afraid of being judged for their own taste.

bumperella · 09/05/2012 12:55

... so d'you reckon it's naff to ask if something is cool or not? :)

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 09/05/2012 12:56

I get annoyed with threads where the OP tries to justify everything they have said. Things like 'Yes I know Mcdonalds is fast food rubbish but we'd been on the road for 15 hours and hadn't eaten for 12 days. We normally eat Waitrose food'

bewitchedandbewildered · 09/05/2012 12:57

BTW I thought NAFF stood for No Ambition Fuck-all Future?

ItsAPublicForumWhine · 09/05/2012 12:58

YANBU.

PregolaLola · 09/05/2012 13:00

but Cogito if you wipe it the wrong way you get thrush.

your obviously naff and have rotten bits.

squeakytoy · 09/05/2012 13:01

and I read the Daily Mail Grin

just like everyone else, but at least I dont pretend and make faux apologies for it when I mention an article!...

Reading it online does not mean you agree with their articles you know!

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 09/05/2012 13:02

The Daily Mail thing annoys me too

'Yes I know it's a daily mail link but I couldn't find another link'

who cares? Just post the fucking link and admit you read the Daily mail site!

Rindercella · 09/05/2012 13:04

I thought if you wiped the wrong way you get cystitis?

Real leather Chaos. To go with the absolutely gorgeous lights you recommended. Now, I do not need to ask anyone if these are naff or not. I love them & that's good enough for me Grin

PregolaLola · 09/05/2012 13:07

Cheers rindercella i argued with myself for about ten minutes with which one it was then, thought thats not your arse either is it?

shame.

fedupofnamechanging · 09/05/2012 13:08

I will join you in the queen of naffness stakes, OP. I have a black leather corner sofa, laminate flooring, photos of my children on the wall, Jack Vettriano prints, billy bookcases and I don't care what anyone else thinks.

I can't imagine myself seriously asking MN whether something is naff, before I purchase it - if I like it and it serves a purpose in my house, then that's good enough for me.

bakingaddict · 09/05/2012 13:10

I agree it's also tribal and a way of trying to define what class you belong to

Your're not likely to come on and say 'Is it working class or chavvy to put potraits on your wall' but you can subtly infer this by saying 'Is it naff to.....for whatever

If your happy with potraits on the wall then i'm happy for you and as my house permanently looks like an explosion at Toys R Us i'm hardly likely to pass judgement on other people's interior style choices

ButteryBiscuitBase · 09/05/2012 13:16

I agree OP! Some people love to think they are oh so kooky/original and alternative but who at the end of the day really gives a shit?! I'm sat on my leather and corduroy corner sofa, watchin loose women on my big telly and at the weekend I'm taking my children to get a 1920's style portrait done! Naff and proud! Grin

fedupofnamechanging · 09/05/2012 13:19

Also, some people like me are just not that fussed about interior style. I want my house to be comfortable and practical for my children and not too difficult to keep clean/decorate. That kind of lends itself to laminate and leather and neutral walls.

And it makes me happy to see photos of my children when I look around the room. How can that possibly be bad?

Rindercella · 09/05/2012 13:21

Smile Pergola. I have a pergola too - is that cool or naff I wonder? It's a bloody minefield isn't it, wondering if any possession you have meets the approval of the MN massive? So pleased I really don't give a rat's arse Grin
