to wonder why people have to ask what's naff or not?

There are so many threads on here (I know, this is a thread about many a thread) canvassing opinions on whether something is cool or naff. Why can't we all just like what we like and not be worried about what others think?

Currently there are posters questioning whether it's naff to have family portraits on the wall, whether it's okay to have hanging baskets or if it's the done thing to order from Boden. FFS...if you like something, have it! If you want a huge great big canvass of your children and you on your sitting room wall, have it! If you want bright and gaudy plastic hanging baskets, have them. If you see a dress in Boden you actually like, have it. Be your own person and don't worry about what others think.

By MN standing, I am probably Queen of naffness...I have black granite surfaces in my kitchen, brown leather sofas in my sitting room and a vase of twiggy shit. I don't have any pebbles knocking about though....well, apart from on my rockery. Holy shit! I just thought, is my rockery naff or cool? Grin

Good point well made Rindercella. Good on you for having the courage of your convictions. It's only our insecurities (damn them!) that make us worry about what everyone else thinks. Thanks for the push to stand tall!

titfortat · 09/05/2012 13:28

I couldn't care less what others think. It is me who has to live with it, so it is me who shall decide what is or isn't naff for me.

NameChangeaGoGo · 09/05/2012 13:35

Very lower middle class to fret about this stuff.

thebody · 09/05/2012 13:35

Totally when one adult has to ask another if something is naff they need to get a grip and grow up.

Fuck off world today from me had quite enough thank you.

I'll join in (well, it'd be naff not to eh? :D)

I have a white, yes read it, WHITE! leather corner sofa (real leather), shiny black glass dining table and coffee table, tv unit etc (some of it's even from Argos gasp!).
I have an LCD tv too, but I'm not on benefits, so I'm not sure if it's naff or not Hmm

I don't have any pebbles or twiggy bits though.

I couldn't give a shiny wotsit Grin

kilmuir · 09/05/2012 13:51

YANBU. was thinking the same thing last night

Katiepoes · 09/05/2012 13:56

Excuse me, as the owner of ELEVEN billy bookcases and the world's cheapest laminate I feel I am missing out on a potential jewel - what is a pergola please?

Rindercella · 09/05/2012 14:01

Mine is something like this Katie. I shall use it for my hanging baskets. Smile

I really couldn't give a chuffing pigs arse about whether things are naff/common/in vougue/stylish/the done thing/whatthefuckingever.

Far more worrying things going on in life than whether faceless entities on an internet forum think my flat is up to their tastes or not.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 09/05/2012 14:06

And, erm, what exactly is wrong with brown leather sofas? Real leather (am presuming real is in some way superior to fake.....) bovvered, me? (no... Just curious!)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 09/05/2012 14:16

Totally agree. I hanker after a black granite work surface. Mine is shitey.

Tend to agree rinders.

I only know things are naff because MN tells me so.

Katiepoes · 09/05/2012 14:26

Rindercella that's lovely! My Mum has one of those all covered in creeper vine type plants. Now that I think of it she also has (her words) a 'water feature' and a HUGE collection of twigs. I also have a pebble and shell collection. Is there a naffness gene do you think?

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 09/05/2012 14:38

i want a water feature Envy
it would make an excellent outdoor design counterpoint to my laminate floors.

Pendeen · 09/05/2012 15:53

It's odd how many people come on here to voice their opinions but then say they don't care what other people think !
