AIBU to think that its ok for people not to want to attend an Ann Summers Party?

I have a friend on facebook, I am not particularly close to her but she is usually a really nice person.

Yesterday she posted an event on facebook, inviting all of her female friends to an Ann Summers party that she is hosting in a few weeks time. Everybody except her closest friends has said that they cannot attend (a couple of people are yet to reply).

Cue half a dozen or so status updates complaining about this, beginning with 'So annoyed about people not wanting to come to my party!' and working up to the most recent one - 'Well I know who my mates are now, don't I? Bunch of arsesoles.'

I actually have FiLs birthday dinner that night, although I wouldn't have been keen to go even if I were free that night. I'm not a prude, I just hate those parties where they try to make you buy stuff!

Most people have just simply said they can't come, some have given reasons such as prior commitments and a couple have said that they are broke and don't want to go when they can't afford to buy.

I suspect that many don't have the spare cash and/or don't like parties where they feel pressured to buy.

Is she being unreasonable to be angry at her friends for not wanting to go to her Ann Summers party?

I once saw a male stripper with my mother
he stood next to me flicking his willy around in what he optimistically thought was an erotic manner. My mum leant towards him and said 'would you mind terribly not doing that'

catgirl1976 · 06/05/2012 13:17

Yanbu. I went to one once when I was very young hoping to get some nice underwear. Next thing I know someone is shoving a vibrator up my nose and playing animal farm orgasm noises! Now I'm not a prude much but I was Blush and couldn't wait to do a back door job which I did about 45 minutes in! Never ever been to another one. Grin

catgirl1976 · 06/05/2012 13:42

I remeber going to one at uni.

The AS woman turned up - asked for a glass of wine. Was met with a blank look and told "We have cider". I think she must have known how it was going to go from there.............no one bought anything. We just didn't have any money

I still feel bad for her. So I have been to that one, the one with the granny and the one where I couldn't drink due to being pg. All hideous

MsKittyFane · 06/05/2012 13:47

"to be a partay plannar you don't need to have a persific anyfink"

:o

What are we waiting for!!

Thumbwitch · 06/05/2012 13:52

YANBU at all and your friend is being ridiculous.

When I moved into my first house, my next door neighbour introduced herself over the fence and said she was having an Ann Summers party the following week, I was welcome to go along. I didn't - I'd have been uncomfortable going to one with my best friends, certainly wouldn't go to one with random strangers!

This does not make me an arsehole or a bad friend - it's just not my idea of a fun thing to do - and coercion on any level would make me rethink my friendship with someone who thought it was ok.

bitofcheese · 06/05/2012 13:54

if i wanted to buy some crutchless undies i wouldn't want to go and buy them at a 'girl gathering', i'd much rather pop in the shop myself. i think the thought of an ann summers party is on par with a girls night out to see some blokes get their kit off to music - not everyones cup of tea

fuzzpig · 06/05/2012 14:02

ElectricSoftParade! I just saw your old thread before this one and was worried you were buried in sex toys somewhere. I'm glad you got away from her - how did you manage it? Did you contact AS about her?

Anyway YANBU OP, I get that these franchises are for people needing money but how can these people not realise that it has such a niche market that they can't survive just by getting their friends and acquaintances to come [arf] to a party?

I have had a few invites to these types of party - pampered chef etc - and I've never even replied. They weren't from close friends and I was blatantly just an attempt to up the numbers. Rude.
