Sorry, it's from the DM. But doesn't the woman have a point? She would stand a better chance of getting a job if she lost weight. I was made redundant and claimed JSA for a few weeks before getting a temping job, I noticed that a lot of the people claiming JSA were fat.

But I also see loads of employed overweight people...

squeakytoy · 03/05/2012 21:49

I expect it is more to do with her overall appearance and not just her size.

WorraLiberty · 03/05/2012 21:49

She's not that fat really.

I was expecting someone far bigger to be honest.

Perhaps she's just had a really clever idea to pretend to the media that this is why no-one's given her a job.

I'm sure she'll have one soon enough now with that publicity.

Stellarforstar · 03/05/2012 21:51

Really? Really?

Well, I worked in a Jobcentre for 8 years (frontline) and I would say that the proportion of overweight claimants was about representative of the local population.

Fat people can lose weight. Stupid people have got a problem for life.

JaneFonda · 03/05/2012 21:52

The current climate is difficult for everyone.

I think it's ridiculous that people are suggesting it's down to weight - it's not.

If she was so convinced it was because she was fat, she has had two years to lose weight and get help for her comfort eating, yet she's only managed a stone?

I think there are other issues here aside from her weight.

Kayano · 03/05/2012 21:55

What a load of rubbish. Maybe she comes across as negative 'boohoo woe is fucking me' in interviews and that's why they don't hire her Wink

McHappyPants2012 · 03/05/2012 21:56

perhaps he is just over quilified

LisaD1 · 03/05/2012 21:57

I would say it's more about attitude than being fat. I am fatter than her (am losing weight but will take a while), and I have NEVER had a problem getting a job.

I'm currently a high level PA in a large corporate world full of young, pretty girls and I still get regular offers to transfer to other directors.

If you think you're too fat for anything then chances are you will be because that vibe will be given off, in my mind I am an excellent PA with many years experience and that is what I believe people see, not the poor little fat girl!

Stellarforstar · 03/05/2012 21:57

Kayano, that's much more likely :)

DPrince · 03/05/2012 21:58

No one has even suggested its because of her weight. She is assuming it is because of thin attractive interviewers. She seems more obsessed with how people look than most. I think she has low self esteem and is, perhaps, not coming across in interviews (lack of confidence) and it seems easier to blame her weight rather the effect her weight is having on her self esteem.

WorraLiberty · 03/05/2012 21:59

Exactly DPrince

And with that mindset, if she wasn't fat she'd probably be blaming her age or something else.

fivegomadindorset · 03/05/2012 22:00

I have just managed to get a great job and a size 22 to boot.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 03/05/2012 22:01

She is full of crap. If she is so convinced its because of her weight, why doesn't she lose some? I can see that size probably does put some employers off, but then I think subconsciously, other people see that being overweight indicates a lack of self control, and that's not desirable to any employer. Especially as the vast majority of middle aged people I know are either overweight, or make a conscious effort not to be overweight.

Why is there always some reason for being fat that is supposed to gain sympathy, like relatives dying with dementia? Why can't she just admit the truth? She ate too much. It's that simple.

fivegomadindorset · 03/05/2012 22:02

Her attitude is wrong, because she is so negative I think she comes across as really negative.

fivegomadindorset · 03/05/2012 22:04

So actually yes she has changed, even though she is saying she hasn't.

McHappyPants2012 · 03/05/2012 22:05

I was seen by a slender, pretty girl from the human resources department. She spoke to me for about ten minutes, during which time she didn?t ask a single question about my skills or experience. that what your CV is for

my limited experience of job interviews is that they want to know the person as they know by the CV what skills and experience you have

Boysrstupid · 03/05/2012 22:06

I'm with Stellar on this one.

Get0rfMoiLand · 03/05/2012 22:09

What a load of old SHITE

The OP, the article and the Daily Mail.

LadyWithEDS · 03/05/2012 22:09

I thought there were some studies done to show that employers go for the more attractive candidate if there is not much between two. Some people will find someone fat attractive, someone else will not.

Spartak · 03/05/2012 22:13

She says she's managed to lose a stone since January. I don't think that is very much for four months or so, and she maybe needs to try a bit harder if she's that bothered about it.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 03/05/2012 22:14

I think it depnds what the job is. If you want to be a personal trainer, PE teacher, football coach etc being hugely fat is probably going to stand in your way.

GoPoldark · 03/05/2012 22:15

'She ate too much. It's that simple.'

I know that's NOT funny but I am in tears here. The truth is BRUTAL.

I got a massive promotion at work. I was 30 weeks pg, had put on 6 stone (lost it now), had spa and very hormonal. I looked a right state, like a planet limping round the office, it seemed like too much effort to to make a big effort hair/make up wise. However, I knew I could do the job. That's what got me it. Even though I went on mat leave 6 weeks later. Confidence counts for a lot.

DPrince · 03/05/2012 22:18

No I didn't have 'spa' at all it was spd. Damn auto correct. :)

CrunchyFrog · 03/05/2012 22:21

It reminded me of the Samantha Brick thing.

Both women totally convinced that their physical attributes are the only defining things about them in the eyes of the world.

There is an element of truth in that, but attitude is also so important. I was as big as the lady in the article 18 months ago, and nothing like as well groomed, but I have never ever stood alone at school pick ups, have rarely failed to get a job I interviewed for, that sort of thing. Being fat doesn't stop you being attractive (and I don't mean in the sexy sense, but in the sense of people wanting to chat to you.) Negativity is not attractive.
