Sorry, it's from the DM. But doesn't the woman have a point? She would stand a better chance of getting a job if she lost weight. I was made redundant and claimed JSA for a few weeks before getting a temping job, I noticed that a lot of the people claiming JSA were fat.

am Shock at it being unprofessional to see clients when PG. If lawyers can represent clients in court, and doctors and nurses treat patients when heavily PG, i fail to see an excuse in this day and age for that sort of discrimination.

She needs to do something about her weight for health reasons, especially as she is getting older. She sounds very negative and miserable.

Where I work we do have two very large ladies in good senior roles but, from my experience, they tend to have more time off sick.

I think that mind set and self confidence have far more to do with getting a job than size (unless you hoping to be model/ fitness coach).

AfricanExport · 04/05/2012 16:17

What a load of rubbish.

I have been a size 22 (luckily I have lost 'some' of that baby weight) and worked in the biggest law firms in the world. I didn't NOT get the job because I was overweight. I got the job because of my personality and my ability to do the job. I suppose it she was up against someone else, equally qualified, then her weight could have been a factor but it would not be the ONLY factor. Even then it would probably not be because she was fat but rather the implication that she was a 'bit lazy' and if you cannot take care of yourself.. isn't that a responsibility issue etc etc. iyswim Having been that weight, and still being overweight, I can see how that could happen and can't even argue the point too much.

I think she is using her weight as an cop out instead of actually trying to find out why she didn't get the job.

So you disagree with the research?

Obesity affects job prospects for women, study finds www.manchester.ac.uk/research/news/display/?id=8224

fascicle,

I think that if you are equally qualified to do a role then your weight would impact the decision however, in my experience of being overweight and working in the city of London, if you can do the job better than others and you are the most qualified for the job then your weight does not come into it, obviously if a person is so overweight that it impacts their mobility and their ability to actually perform the role that is a different issue. I do not think this is true of someone who is only a size 22. Also I believe it is as much about presentation as a persons weight. If you go into an interview at a top city law firm you dress for the occasion - you make sure that you look totally professional. Now obviously I do not know what she looked like at the interview but I have had a look at her linked-in profile and it's not nearly as good as the photo in the paper.... Again your linked-in profile is fundamental to getting a job in the city today.

PinTHISonYerCabbageMister · 04/05/2012 17:13

When I was slim and pretty Hmm I interviewed a LOT. My favourite hiree ever was an extremely large lady. Obese, not just fat. But motivated, cheerful, interested in everything, unafraid to put opinions forward, eager to learn all the time, and generally lovely to have on the team. I would guess that the Mail lady is missing one or more of the above attributes if she cannot find a job despite her experience.

FreePeaceSweet.......YOU GO GIRL. i would have seriously loved to see their cowering little faces in that car.
fridgepants is right. It is because cheap food is the unhealthy stuff.
In the supermarket earlier i noticed that 2 small punnets of rasperries are £4 and a bunch of grapes .......£4.98. Bit hard for someone on £67 a week to fork out for those sorts of prices i would think.

One day people will recognise and address the appalling prejudice shown to fat people. Disgraceful
