Sorry, it's from the DM. But doesn't the woman have a point? She would stand a better chance of getting a job if she lost weight. I was made redundant and claimed JSA for a few weeks before getting a temping job, I noticed that a lot of the people claiming JSA were fat.

FreePeaceSweet Most women bitch behind other women's backs but not all. I do agree that most women wouldn't consider verbal abuse like that.

Where do some men get off thinking they have the right to speak to someone like that. They're so perfect in every way aren't they!

catgirl1976 · 04/05/2012 10:12

When I was pg, but at that stage where it could be a baby, could be fat, a white van went past me and the male inhabitants leant out of the window and screamed "fatty" at me.

I was horrified - it really upset me even though I was pg not fat (well, you know a bit of both :) )

Horrified to hear from freepeace that such behaviour is fairly common :(

YonWhaleFish · 04/05/2012 10:13

She is fat. A size 22 is fat. I'm fat and I'm a 16.

It's not right that looks play a part in hiring for office jobs, but it does happen.

I agree that a 17 year old be-acned lad isn't the best option for selling face cream to 30+ ladies.

CrispyCod · 04/05/2012 10:15

Oh, and with regards to the DM article, I do actually think she has a point, I've witnessed this attitude in my own workplace.

With regard to the 17 year old with acne,I am in the beauty industry & equally wouldn't employ him. You are selling an ideal to a point & it may put off some. I wouldn't employ a family member in a selling role unless they have a real flair for selling,as I have more interest in employing someone who is passionate about the industry & not purely using the family connection.
Perhaps there is a job your ds could do that wouldn't involve selling? It would actually demoralise him to have people studying his skin as he was talking about what the product would do for them.
How many times have we seen threads about people finding it a bad example for the gp to giving them stern words about their weight whilst being obese themselves?
This woman is not employed in a role that involves her looks in any way,but has decided that her weight is the reason for being unemployed. As I said previously (as have others) it's more likely her attitude (& her age too now sadly) that are putting people off.

I'm used to it. I get a feeling of dread when I see builders or a car with young lads in. Its a pleasant surprise when they pass quietly. When I was pg with my youngest a group of lads shouted that I was a nasty fat bitch while I was putting the shopping into the boot of my car. My little boy asked why they were shouting. I told them they were being silly. Dh didn't hear anything as he was in the car already. When we drove around the corner I saw the car parking up and all the lads getting out. I screamed at dh to stop the car. I jumped out and flew at the driver. I worked myself up and was screaming at him. "Why? What did I ever do to you? My size has fuck all to do with you! My little boy heard you abusing me!!!" Then I started to kick his car to fuck. My dh (who was a pc at the time) dragged me away and went over to the car. The lads in the car had locked themselves in and the police arrived. To cut a long story short these idiots were told that unless they apologised to me they'd be arrested for abusing me. My actions were a result of being abused. The whole incident was caught on cctv. I felt ashamed of my actions that day but I realised that they hopefully they'll be careful about shouting abuse in future. Sometimes fatty fights back.

catgirl1976 · 04/05/2012 10:33

Free am Shock that it is so frequent.

Horrible people. They must have pretty emplty lives to need to do that to feel better about themselves

I hope you did some serious damage to that car.

FreePeaceSweet · 04/05/2012 10:36

I had to laugh when I felt better about the incident. They actually hid in the car while I was kicking it. I think I put a dent in the door. They got away lightly really.

CrispyCod · 04/05/2012 10:41

i think its rubbish. she is the same size as most of the nurses at the hospital, the receptionist at the dentist I went to the other week, the vet I took the cat too.

This women went for a position in quite a male dominated environment. Poor attitudes towards larger women can be rife.

I once worked in an professional office where the senior partner warned the office manager to employ pretty secretaries. "Sort the boys out" he said to her. Shock

I agree Crispy Cod. Its just the way it is. Some men treat women like objects. I've always been told that I've got a pretty face/nice personality which sadly is the only compliments a fat person gets these days. Oh and that I dress nicely considering... :o

AbsofAwesomeness · 04/05/2012 10:54

I read this yesterday, and was quite Hm. about it all.

For a start - there is a massive recession are. There are tons of people interviewing and applying for jobs with little or no success, and it's because there aren't many jobs going around. She might not be getting jobs that she is over-qualified for because ... she's overqualified! and employers think she'll be unhappy, and leave as soon as there's a better opportunity and finally, because she probably commands a higher salary than someone less qualified. It could also be down to attitude - she does sound resentful and defeated, and that will come across in interviews.

Yes, there is prejudice against people who are overweight, but not every single employer is fattist, much like not every woman is insanely jealous of Samantha Brick's breathless "beauty", but that wouldn't work in a DM article "some people are prejudiced and there's a recession on so someone is struggling to get a job" just isn't as catchy as "Get a job at my size? Fat chance"

FreePeaceSweet · 04/05/2012 10:55

It is funny yakbutter. It goes to show that some people are complete wusses. Of course I wasn't supposed to catch up with them and stick up for myself. That was too much for their peabrains to compute. "Whoa! the person we picked on is here, demanding answers and kicking fuck out of our souped up Corsa... what to do... ring the police and lock ourselves in the car of course!" The driver even claimed he shouted at some fit girls not me! :o

Thumbwitch · 04/05/2012 10:56

I also agree that an acne-covered 17yo boy is not an ideal advert for face creams!
I used to work in a clinic where the beauty therapist was overweight (no real issue) but had spots, greasy hair and rarely wore make-up. I am not a fan of make-up and don't have perfect skin myself BUT I'm not a beauty therapist either - and I don't think she was a very good advert for her own services! Oddly enough, she didn't have too many clients - and while it might be very shallow, I can see their point.
The next beauty therapist there was as neat as a pin, always perfectly turned out without being overdone and had loads of clients because she looked the part.

CrispyCod · 04/05/2012 10:57

What gets me is that these arseholes think that because you're fat you don't meet their standards. Do they really think that if you were thin and gorgeous you'd give them a second look anyway.

Another thing that makes me laugh is when an older guy letches at young girls and considers any female around his age to be 'past it'. I know quite a few men with that mindset. I can really see a young teenage girl being attracted to their middle aged beer gut!

OrmIrian · 04/05/2012 10:58

I should think her self-esteem is low after thay many interviews and no job! Fat or not, it would demoralise anyone. And with the experience and ability she has they are idiots if her weight is putting them off.

frumpet · 04/05/2012 11:00

Is nobody else going to point out the bleeding obvious SHE IS WEARING ORANGE

WorraLiberty · 04/05/2012 11:01

The old Head Teacher at my DS's school was hugely obese...so much so that he couldn't do the button of his trousers up and always wore braces. No matter what he wore, he just looked a mess to be honest.

Then he'd lecture the children and parents about healthy eating and exercise (possibly forced by OFSTED)

It made him a laughing stock amongst children and parents alike Sad

CrispyCod · 04/05/2012 11:02

AbsofAwesomeness · 04/05/2012 11:10

I totally agree about the whole gross overweight old man thinking he can get slim hot young woman. Many, many men I have met have this delusion. It's completely at odds with reality

I was joking with a friend and went "Bar Rafaeli's now single, maybe you have a chance" "nah, I'm too good looking for her" (from mid thirties, not in any way good looking male friend)

Nancy66 · 04/05/2012 11:10

in whose universe is that woman not fat?? She IS fat - she is very very overweight.

The story was written off the back of a news report that showed employers are reluctant to employ overweight people - something that is true.

Plenty of shops, restaurants, airlines, banks etc will not employ larger people.

WorraLiberty · 04/05/2012 11:14

She is without a doubt fat

But from the OP, I expected her to be much fatter so I was surprised when I clicked the link.

wordfactory · 04/05/2012 14:44

I think attractive people do find it easier to get on in life, including the workplace. And people equate being slim with being attractive.

It is not right but it is true.

TheLightPassenger · 04/05/2012 15:41

It is a v hard time for older women in this job market, I feel sorry for this lady but I suspect that her weight plays a minimal part in her lack of success job hunting. It's understandable that her confidence has taken a knock if she has been to scores of job interviews and been knocked back from them all.

Btw for those few people scoffing at her losing only one stone - being v overweight can cause a condition caused insulin resistance (a form of pre-diabetes), which is v similar to PCOS, in that it makes it v difficult to lose weight so a 1lb a week may actually be bloody good going (particularly if she carries on like this).
