Would you be upset if a mum said this about your baby?

Bumped in to a mum from ds1 old nursery today. Not seen her for about six months, maybe more.

We both had our dc2 about the same time.

Other mum looked at my ds2 and the first thing that came out of her mouth was.....

" wow, look at those ears!"

Now, ds2 ears stick out a little (pic on profile), but he's not a human dumbo. I just felt that she was rude and it upset me that she said it.

She didn't back track or make a joke of what she said-that was just what she meant.

Am I being too sensitive?

Yes, very rude.

Your son is a beautiful boy. You must be very proud.

bochead · 03/05/2012 12:14

The woman needs to go to specsavers.

He's gorg!

goonies · 03/05/2012 13:01

She isn't saying he is ugly? Sorry, it's just I've been there but am not that insensitive to remarks made. My son has big ears and we had lots of comments when he was little, he grew into them and is as adorable as his daddy, who also has big ears.

For info your son doesn't have big ears, or if they are classed as big, then my sons must be massive!! Lol!! and yes both are very handsome chaps. X

snappysnappy · 03/05/2012 13:04

Very very rude. Just ignore and be thankful that you have better manners

imnotmymum · 03/05/2012 13:06

How rude !! I do not know what you should have said either in that position.

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 03/05/2012 13:09

Was her offspring considerably less handsome than yours? His ears don't stick out HALF as much as mine do and I used to be a model...(a proper one...not a topless one or a pretend one) Grin

He is very lovely and no, his ears would not have been noticed f you hadn't said what this woman said. Rude cow.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 03/05/2012 14:03

Thanks again. You've reassured me I wasn't being too sensitive and she was rude.

The other woman has two delicate little girls so our children are very different.

Will remember the mn mantra for next time...

His ears do stick out but they are not huge. His gorgeous eyes are huge. Anyway, having ears that stick out has long been a sign of belonging to the real upper crust ;) The one that money alone can't buy.

KMR281 · 03/05/2012 15:22

well it is very, very rude. My MIL asked if we were going to get our DS1 and DS2's ears 'sorted out' (ie plastic surgery). What a cowbag. I mean, their ears don't even stick out. Some people just see negatives and whinge, rather than seeing the nice things. You can only rise above it!

ItsTimeToBurnThisDiscoDown · 03/05/2012 20:20

Have just read your update, she was being a bitch! Maybe she's jealous of your cutie.

OAM2009 · 03/05/2012 20:27

Yes, I would be upset. That is quite rude and there's no positive way to take it. Then again, I have been known to open my mouth and put my foot straight in, often without realising the upset and offence I've caused. So, don't take this woman's stupidity to heart. He's gorgeous so she must be a bit dup! x

Dozer · 03/05/2012 20:30

I definitely upset SIL recently by commenting on (gorgeous) toddler nephew's sticky-out ears. It just popped out!

He got the ears from her, so doubly insulting. Blush

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 03/05/2012 20:34

YANBU at all. That was a needlessly rude thing to say. Both your boys are gorgeous and lovely.

Please don't feel guilty Sad I'm not surprised you were too shocked to deliver a retort back- your baby is beautiful and that was a mean thing to say. Jesus, no wonder children nowadays get such complexes about their looks. Hmm

BeauNash · 03/05/2012 20:37

Perfectly normal ears.

Floggingmolly · 03/05/2012 20:37

Yes, I would! Silly bitch.

olimpia · 03/05/2012 20:40

YANBU
But i also find it very difficult not to comment on big ears and a couple of times bit my tongue and almost said it!

MadameChinLegs · 03/05/2012 20:41

Your little boy is gorgeous!! Please don't think on what what said about him, she's an idiot. Thinking maybe she's jealous that you breed beautiful.

AKMD · 03/05/2012 20:43

Shock YANBU! I once made a thoughtless and rude remark about someone's baby Blush but I at least had the grace to apologise immediately and kick myself repeatedly for my foot-in-mouth comment, which still makes me blush every time I think of it.

Your profile must be scoring a lot of hits today! Your DS's ears look perfectly normal to me and both your sons are gorgeous :)

DS was born early covered in white hair. DH said he looked like the Grinch Angry He is still not forgiven...

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 03/05/2012 20:46

I think, in hindsight, I was feel upset because it was the only comment she made, iyswim.

No-hasn't he grown big, doesn't he look different to Alfie, he's a little bruiser, he's got a beautiful smile etc etc

Just - wow look at your ears!

And I don't think I would have minded as much - maybe - had she been family or a close friend, or if she had backtracked once she realised she put her foot in it.

I don't know, it's done now. I don't care that his ears stick out a bit, I just thought it was rude of her to make such a curt comment. Thanks for all your opinions though Smile

Grin when I asked DH what name our DD looked like when she was born he said Gollum. Thankfully we went with something else.

Booboostoo · 03/05/2012 21:13

Your little boy is lovely and your 'friend' is a rude cow.

This stupid woman we known only vaguely turned up at my place yesterday (unannounced!) and proceeded to say how much DD (11 months) looks like her dad (which is fine, she does and I think they both look great!) and how they are both fat, while doing a 'fat jowly movement' with her hands below her face! She then proceeded to tell me (a Greek) how France's troubles will be over now that the government is clamping down on foreign immigrants!

dondon33 · 04/05/2012 11:09

No YA-definitely-NBU
How rude and stupidly brainless of the silly bint to say something like that, honestly, what makes people think they can go around insulting children.
Even if your child did have sticky-outys it's not her god damn business to comment.
I'm not sure if I could of controlled my mouth, something along the lines of
" we can always fix the ears later if needed..something I see you have never managed to do with your face" or " ears can be made to look better, unfortunately for you ugliness can't"

IslaValargeone · 04/05/2012 11:16

Honestly, I had to look several times at your photos trying to find a piccy of sticky out ears. I don't know what she's going on about frankly, your baby's ears look perfectly fine to me and he is scrumptious.
She is bloody rude, and I am very glad she doesn't know my family, because goodness knows what she'd say about my dc's ears.

Scholes34 · 04/05/2012 14:45

Went to a talk this week given by John Barnes on racism. He said he would never let an ignorant person upset him by what they say. This is good advice to follow.

Debsbear · 04/05/2012 15:20

Having now just worked out how to view your pics Blush I can't believe that his ears were what caught her eye. My immediate reaction would have been "what amazing eyes he has" he's gorgeous!
