to plant a hazelnut tree when my friends son has a nut allergy?

my good friends ds has a nut allergy. he comes round to play at our house a fair bit. I want to plant a hazelnut tree in the garden, but obviously dont want to if it will trigger his allergy. Is it just ingestion which causes the reaction, or could playing in the garden where there is a nut tree do it also?

Depends if he has a nut allergy or a peanut allergy. Some children are allergic to both, I know a boy who is allergic to tree nuts only. Better to ask his mum

squeakytoy · 02/05/2012 10:14

considering how long it takes for a tree to grow I wouldnt worry too much..

imnotmymum · 02/05/2012 10:17

I am just laughing so much my dog thinks I am crazy I am so sorry I know it is serious but never did I think I would read that sentence "to plant a hazelnut tree when my ..." I think you would have to research it. Again so sorry not being rude but I am still giggling every time I read it

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 02/05/2012 10:18

Why don't you ask your friend if it's likely to affect him?

Mrsjay · 02/05/2012 10:21

is the boy likley to be climbing the tree Grin i know you are trying to consider the little boy but to you think he will be coming round your house forever , plant your tree the take years to grow ,

Mrsjay · 02/05/2012 10:22

but do you think*

primrose22 · 02/05/2012 10:22

My ds has nut allergy and I must admit I wouldn't exactly be thrilled if any of my close friends did the same but hey, its your garden. My ds has reacted when in close proximity to nut trees and although he's only needed piriton, its still not great for him! Hope that helps?

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 10:22

Ive asked my friend/his mum obviously; she doesnt know. Ive googled it-cant find any info

It isnt just peanuts lisad

I expect to be friends with them forever squeaky so it is a worry-also I think they start producing nuts on year 2?

PLant a plum tree.

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 10:23

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 10:24

You could always try telling him not to go near it...

It is your garden, plant the tree if you want to!

bitofcheese · 02/05/2012 10:39

i think you should plant what you want BUT make sure you tell the boys mother so she can make a decision as to whether or not he should play in the garden. fwiw my dd has severe allergy to peanut & hazlenut. i think i would let her go in the garden but she would have to avoid the area the trea was in.

ILikeTrains · 02/05/2012 10:41

The hazelnuts are unlikely to get much past the green stage before being taken by squirrels, unless you were going to net the tree, in which case the lad wouldn't get near them anyway.

Memoo · 02/05/2012 10:45

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 10:48

that was the other reason for planting it-I hope we get squirrels!
Do you think we would? we are very urban-only see squirrels in the park. We have had foxes

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 10:49

I dont think him not playing in our garden is an option really- i wouldnt want that-id rather not have the tree. Maybe Ill plant it in a few years when he wont want to play in the garden

One of my sons is allergic to all nuts.He has different allergic reactions to different nuts. All of which require his epipen, pills and a quick run to the hospital.Bit of a nightmare. When the nut tree gets bigger, people are going to want to eat the nuts, leave shells around etc, transfer bits of nuts on their hands to cups etc.Other people in your life can get nut allergic later in life I think I am right in saying. It isnt just now you need to think about.Sorry to dampen your dreams.

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 10:50

double waht memoo?

Hmmmm amillionyears we do have nuts in the house though- we eat alot of nuts! I always feel like the wicked step mother when he comes round, because there is inevitably a bowl of cashews/pistachios/peanut hanging around, which the kids have been nibbling

To test if you have squirrels in your area you could put some bird feeders up for a while, they love stealing bird food.

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 10:52

i never considered residue on cutlery etc

OP posts:
willikillhim · 02/05/2012 10:56

oh trains Sad next doors always have bird feeders- no squirrels then

CogitoErgoSometimes · 02/05/2012 10:59

YANBU to plant a nut tree. IF you actually get any nuts off the thing it would be a miracle to start with and, by the time it bears fruit, the child will be big enough to know better than to steal. Would you plough up your whole garden if a friend had hay-fever? Hmm There's 'being considerate' and then there's taking things to silly extremes.

SoupDragon · 02/05/2012 11:01

How old is he? Unless he reacts to essence of nut in the air then surely you can tell him where the nut tree is and to avoid it. I imagine he isn't that allergic though since you say you have bowls of nuts about. If you put it in a corner or edge you could have a barrier of some kind you can put round it when he visits to remind him not to touch it.
