to plant a hazelnut tree when my friends son has a nut allergy?

my good friends ds has a nut allergy. he comes round to play at our house a fair bit. I want to plant a hazelnut tree in the garden, but obviously dont want to if it will trigger his allergy. Is it just ingestion which causes the reaction, or could playing in the garden where there is a nut tree do it also?

he is very aware of his allergy and diligent. I was thinking about maybe if he was rolling around on the grass and there were kernels for example, or pollen/leaves etc-I didnt know if these trigger allergies

he wouldnt eat the nuts

You won't get squirrels unless they have a route back to woodland. I have lots of trees in my garden, but no squirrels because behind and to the side are houses and to the front a main road without trees. Am glad because they can't dig up my bulbs and steal the bird food.

Blu · 02/05/2012 11:12

Squirrels are horrible.
They dig up bulbs, they will eat lots of things you plant for food.
They disturb small birds nesting and may eat eggs, and even small fledglings.
They dig holes on your lawn
They are aggressive little f**ers and if they get bold enough will be on your lunch if you eat outdoors.

i like things which are very small but bold-as-brass though Grin

like rats

" reacts to essence of nut in the air" Soup that is hilarious

primrose22 · 02/05/2012 11:15

Erm, cogito, life threatening nut allergy is very different to hay fever. Do I need to point out the difference? I realise hay fever can be a misery but as far as I am aware its unable to kill you in a matter of minutes? Do correct me if I'm mistaken!

valiumredhead · 02/05/2012 11:16

My son couldn't come round to play at yours if you had that in your garden - plant something else! :)

Can you imagine how you would feel if he did react? Plums are lovely!

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 11:16

Xactly primrose

anaphalactic reaction in friend, would certainly detract from my enjoyment of the nut tree

cogito hay fever and life threatening nut allergies are non comparable.

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 11:19

valium I think it will probably be more soft fruit!

My son has nut allergy to all nuts and we have an inherited hazelnut tree in our garden. He sometimes digs them up where the squirrels have buried them, and just throws them away and knows not to play with them. No reactions so far, but then he isn't a supersensitive child. Some kids probably would react. Also, some parents would be made very very anxious about that situation, depending on how recent the diagnosis is, how familiar they are with the boundaries of the conditions, etc. So, in a NUTSHELL (do you see what I did there?)...ask your friend.

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 11:23

i did ask my friend- she didnt know whether it would affect him. Hes been diagnosed maybe 2 or 3 years (?) He has varying reactions, but has had swollen throat and hospital trips i believe

she said thanks for considering him, and i said i would do some research before/if i planted it Smile

I think you are being a lovely considerate friend Smile

Dont want to alarm people, but wish to educate.People with allergic reactions to nuts, who do not get immediate treatment, can die in 15 minutes. My DS carries an epipen and pills absolutely everywhere. His workplace has been trained, he had to give a talk to them and show them how to use his medication on him in case he is unable to do it himself.
Swollen throat means he is unable to breathe properly.

willikillhim · 02/05/2012 11:40

yeah, i dont think it is worth the risk million is it

OP posts:
amillionyears · 02/05/2012 11:46

I dont think so.It sounds like your good friends DS has it quite bad too.
My son even has mild reactions if several of us play games with cards or paper etc, and the things are being passed from one person to another, if the people in the room have had nuts, and not my DS.
Not all people with nut allergy are so bad. They can be mild, moderate or severe. My DS is severe.I suspect your friends DS is too. The DS should have a diagnosis of one of the three.

valiumredhead · 02/05/2012 11:50

Also worth remembering that reactions can vary - we have had hospital trips where ds's face has swollen up so much he was blind for 2 days following and we have had slight itchy throats that have needed Piriton.

Not worth the risk imo and you do sound like a lovely considerate friend :)

flatpackhamster · 02/05/2012 11:51

FGS. You can't die from climbing a hazelnut tree unless you fall out of it.

Plant the tree. You won't get any hazelnuts although you will have the county's roundest squirrels.

amillionyears · 02/05/2012 11:53

As to essence of nut in the air, this may not be relevant to an outside tree?, but aeroplanes take this very seriuosly indeed. My DS went abroad for work, we had to tell the airline, and they then do not put peanuts on the food trolley, and ask passengers not to eat nuts on the trip. because when people eat them , it gets into the airconditioning.Embarrasing for my DS.Planes have been diverted because it has caused passengers to have nut allergy attacks. This is costly for aeroplane companies, that is why they do it.
People with more knowledge about this may be able to explain better.

Sallyingforth · 02/05/2012 11:56

If you plant a young tree now it will be several years before it bears fruit.

In the meantime you can use your tree as an example to teach him about the sort he needs to avoid.

little bastard squirrels got all our hazelnuts!

valiumredhead · 02/05/2012 12:05

flat Do you have an allergic child or know anyone who is severely allergic? I find it hard to understand your 'FGS' if you do Hmm

Avoiding the tree is easy - but as the OP says if there are nuts on the ground which get trodden on and inside of the nut is exposed, kids pick up all sorts of crap and the risk becomes higher.

SoupDragon · 02/05/2012 12:07

But the Op also says she has bowls of nuts about Confused
