is this a bit cheeky?

we would of course be buying drinks there and probably lunch some days

Every mn'er staying at a 5 star hotel over the next 6 months is so going to have their eyes peeled for the OP Wink

AmazingBouncingFerret · 23/04/2012 07:38

Oh we used to do similar all the time.

Our apartment in Malta was right next door to a hotel and we always used to go up onto the roof and use the pool.

but it helped that we knew the owners and they didnt mind

Wouldnt dare do it in any other situation though.
Does your hotel not have a pool?

iscream · 23/04/2012 09:16

No, I would not do that. It is dishonest.

sadsquirrel · 23/04/2012 09:56

yes it does have a pool, but the one next door is much better and larger.
you just go in via the seafront, just walk right in, this is abroad btw

thanks your your advice, yes i think i'll continue to do it, as we will be buying drinks and food there anyhow.

AllotmentLottie · 23/04/2012 11:30

Have done this in Greece, but asked each time and paid a small day fee.

Butkin · 23/04/2012 11:32

They will surely notice because I'd guess guests at the hotel would charge things to their room whereas you'll have to pay in cash.

I think the 3 star/5 star issue is a red herring.

I think it comes down to this question. If your are staying in any class of hotel and people walk off the street (irrelevant that they are staying in other hotels unless there is an agreement - could just be gangs of locals) and take up your space on the sunloungers, pool, beach, bar etc would you be happy?

slowestwildebeast · 23/04/2012 11:35

So why ask if yabu if you're just going to do it anyway?

thatisall · 23/04/2012 11:36

are you sneaking your dcs in there aswell? Thats a great lesson they're being taught

sadsquirrel · 23/04/2012 11:40

well we are not sneaking them in, we are walking in normally

i asked incase anyone said anything that changed my mind, but nothing changed it, just thought nalot of the comments people made are ott and well silly really

OP posts:
thatisall · 23/04/2012 11:42

and potentially risking them the embarrassment of being thrown out as you haven't paid for the facilities you are using

MrsCampbellBlack · 23/04/2012 11:45

Well of course its nicer - its 5 star.

Yes teaching your children to do the right thing is just so silly and OTT Hmm

YusMilady · 23/04/2012 11:46

Well it doesn't sound very 5* to me

The whole point of paying extra for 5 is exclusivity - ie security staff to keep the riffraff out (sorry OP but you'd be pissed off too if you get into this fabulous pool and it's full of people from the 1 down the road). I'd be less than impressed with a hotel that let anyone waltz in off the street - find it hard to believe, in fact. But then I am very very uptight and like my holidays quiet and my pools as empty as possible.

MrsCampbellBlack · 23/04/2012 11:49

Well to be fair in some places hotels are called 5 star and they're not what I would call 5 star [sticks nose in air]

StealthPolarBear · 23/04/2012 11:50

I suppose the comments are ott and silly to someone who is prepared to steal. Go rfht ahead op but don't delude yourself that it is ok with people who are honest.

nothingoldcanstay · 23/04/2012 11:54

So Yus - supposing you had booked your 5 star hotel and it was completely packed out because of a large wedding or something. Noisy over excited guests braying all around the pool area, hogging all the sun loungers...

And next door the 3 star has a lovely pool all quiet and with only a few old people gently doing the odd length...

sadsquirrel · 23/04/2012 12:04

i can honsetly say wouldn't bother me if i was asked to leave, i'd just say yeah sure no problem, with a big smile. then go onto the beach.

OP posts:
YusMilady · 23/04/2012 12:04

Plenty of hotels make a virtue of their quietness and their relaxing ambience. The chances of me paying serious money to holiday in a place with noisy, braying or overexcited wedding parties is precisely nil.

YusMilady · 23/04/2012 12:05

If I want braying, obnoxious twats around me all day I'll stay at work. Smile

helloclitty · 23/04/2012 12:14

I have stayed in a 5 star before and snuck into the 3 star next door everyday because they had better kids facilities! So YANBU Grin

Fluffy1234 · 23/04/2012 13:01

I couldn't relax at fear of being thrown out. Just sounds really tight to me.

notaniphoneownerjustabadtypist · 23/04/2012 13:10

if I stayed in a 5 hotel i would expect the riff raff to be kept out the pool to be for exclusive use of paying guests. That's what you are paying 5 prices for no?

VonHerrBurton · 23/04/2012 14:10

So. Let's just imagine there is no 5* establishment with better, bigger, nicer facilities next door, your only choice is your shitty, small pool. The cheapo apartment block next door to you all empty out into your pool, 'cos there isn't one at theirs. You and your family can't get sunbeds and it's full of noisy teenagers splashing your kids.

It's OK though 'cos they're buying drinks. That will make all the difference to you, won't it?

Super cheeky and plain theft. I'm embarrassed for you.

AbsofAwesomeness · 23/04/2012 14:15

YABU and morally reprehensible.

Floggingmolly · 23/04/2012 14:21

I'd just say, Sure, no problem, with a big smile. Have you no sense of shame? Would you honestly feel no trace of embarrassment at essentially being caught stealing? Your kids are getting a wonderful lesson there. Hmm
If it works, you could always expand your repertoire by fine dining in exclusive restaurants in the evenings and then legging it before the bill comes.
Same principle really.

slowestwildebeast · 23/04/2012 15:04

I'd just say, Sure, no problem, with a big smile.

ha!! you'll look like a bit of a chump then won't you. Might try that next time I rock up to an all you can eat buffet that I've not paid for. Why don't you see if there are any weddings going on at the hotel, think of the free shit there! Help yourself to champagnes and nibbles, toast the bride after your swim. In for a penny and all that.
