to make my dc eat healthy cereals for breakfast????

Apparently EVERYONE else has chocolate type breakfast cereals.

Mine have to have things like shreddies/weetabix/cornflakes/rice crisps etc etc. They are allowed honey on it.
During school holidays they choose their own cereals (frosties, coco pops type stuff)
Am I a horrible mother?

Quite sometime ago I saw an in depth study of breakfast cereals in the tv. It showed that it really didn't matter what cereal kids ate for breakfast, the important thing was that they ate breakfast at all. Even the tv presenter seemed surprised.

I was on a thread a while ago where a mum was slating others on the thread for using quick cook/instant porridge - she used a slow cooker. No idea what the difference is.

My dc's prefrer the cold dregs of my porridge, and my oldest isn't quite 4yrs old yet so they get cheerios or shreddies.

Hmmm Ilikecandy I hope you don't mean the Dove Stars which have 35g of sugar per100g (waaaay above my sugar max in cereal) or the cocoa pops which are 21gs of sugar.

Surely what is important is a child's whole diet in a day and circumstances.My dc have to eat breakfast at 7am as I work. They don't want breakfast that early but have to have breakfast due to the ludicrous fruit only snack rule so I compromise eg they will have a tiny bit of maple syrup on porridge,or the new Weetabix Golden Syrup(surprisingly not bad re sugar) or a tsp of sugar on cornflakes.

They don't have sweets,sugary drinks or puddings bar yog during the rest of the day so in a whole day it's not an issue.They eat breakfast and don't feel ill mid morning and still have a better diet than the maj of their friends who bring in shite filled lunchboxes.

I hate this nanny state,crucify mothers over one tiny parenting choice attitude it's ridiculous.It's like the fruit only snack(sorry to keep harping on but I will).Our school insists on this but lets kids have lunchboxes filled with shite,no sweets or choc but still a heck of a lot of shite. It's madness.

Balance is what is needed,that and common sense both of which have gone out the window in recent years regarding parenting

I don't think ilikecandy has got a chip. People have got a slating on here for trying to give their kids a healthy breakfast. I don't give a shite what other people choose to feed their kids, but if people try and feed their kids food they think is healthy why should they have to apologise for it or be told to give yourself a pat on the back? The op asked if she was being unreasonable, lots of people thought she wasn't, lots obviously do. There's no need to have a bun fight over it or an egg, bacon, frosties versus weetabix fight

Breakfast is but one meal out of 3 or more in a day. It's about balance.

Sorry but you can't judge when you don't know a chid's entire diet in an average week.

The uber healthy breakfast feeders with zero sugar may well pack up a lunchbox of shite or dole out continuous glasses of juice thus making it pointless to judge.

I think bacon, sausage, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and fried bread is a delicious, well-balanced breakfast. Am I alone in this? Hmm

Also Ilikecandy has actually very little cause for judging when she gives her kids Dove cereals two of which are no better/worse in the sugar stakes than many cereals not boxed in pretty organic packaging.

I'm alright, I've done this one. I got roasted alive for denying mine sugar and getting a cob on when my mum dished out the Tate&Lyle.

2 years down the line and I'm grateful for 'breakfast biscuits' because I just want to know he's eaten before school.

I think that taff has got a point that cereal is not worth judging over. You should have all joined me for hoicking up the pants in aid of the woman who said, at 08.57 'no, you've already had chocolate this morning' and then 15 seconds rummaged in her purse for her 5YO to go in the shop on the way to school...

porridge, fruit, dried fruit, toast, eggs, low suger and salt beans, bran flakes, oatabix, shredded wheat, sugar free rice crispies. If we need to add something sweet, we use low GI agarve nectar or suger free Delpher jam from sainsbos.

Ds has shredded wheat, porridge, weetabix, rice krispies or toast.

On the weekend it might be eggs / bacon and toast and a real treat would be a toasted hot cross bun.

Sorry but coco pops and the like are not breakfast imo they are a sugary pudding.

Dingbatsfur - do you mean the BBC programme a few years ago presented by Professor Lesley Regan? (she's an obstetrician and research professor at St Marys Hospital in London, and also a parent herself). I should also point out that the next programme in that same series was about cosmetics and antiageing creams and was what led to a rush on Boots' no 7 Protect and Perfect range, because they tested it on the show. But that's another thread... Wink I think it is true that any breakfast is the main thing, and it won't kill the children to have a few chocolate cereals. As long as they have healthy food for other meals. And their teeth are looked after (water after breakfast, brush regularly, etc) But a "virtuous" breakfast is fine too.

I've tried giving dd coco pops cause I fancied them and she doesn't like them but loves crunchy but cornflakes, suger puff, Cheerios, weetabix, etc. I give her a choice of two or three and have a break from each one regularly so she doesn't get too into only eating one.

No not the dove stars, there are a few dove cereals and they occasionally have the one made with millet rice etc. 9 times out of 10 it's porridge with fruit puree though. Yep, I don't get giving kids shit like frosties or Coco pops and circumstances have nothing to do with it. Love the way some posters try to put their massive shoulder chips on me, now that is incredibly amusing.

I live in North America where most breakfast cereals seem to be sweets/cookies in disguise. They have very little nutrition and IMO taste disgusting. I don't (generally) buy food that I think is horrible. Plus ds is rarely interested in eating in the morning so we try to aim for energy dense food (he is under weight). The best options for us are muesli type cereal (we both love Dorset cereals) with yogurt or wholemeal toast with an egg. I'm not too bothered if there is sugar involved, so long as it's also sustaining (sugar rush doesn't exist, but energy crashes certainly do).

dh makes great breakfasts at the weekend (pancakes, waffles, french toast etc - yummy with plenty of maple syrup).

Oh and I grew up with either weetabix or oats for breakfast and never developed a sweet tooth - rebellion is not inevitable (or at least it doesn't have to be food focused!)

9 pages of this - I can't believe breakfast is so complicated.

So DS1 will will only eat yoghurt for breakfast (the pre-packed kind, not milked from my own goat with home- grown purée) - is that ok or should I either let him go hungry or pin him down and scoop in the guinea pig food? DS2 and 3 are happy with porridge or weetabix, which I know gather are ok?
