Apparently EVERYONE else has chocolate type breakfast cereals.

Mine have to have things like shreddies/weetabix/cornflakes/rice crisps etc etc. They are allowed honey on it.
During school holidays they choose their own cereals (frosties, coco pops type stuff)
Am I a horrible mother?

I used to try giving my DD healthy breakfast like weetabix, granola, muesli and brown bread toasted, but she ended up eating only a few spoons and feeling hungry all morning at school. So after a few attempts I gave up, just give her choices of cereals (cornflake, cheerios, weetabix mini , etc) she wanted instead! At least she have full stomach to school until lunch time. But i was so glad when she sometimes requested egg soldiers, French toasted and pancake. Although it took time cooking, I prefer she had hot or protein breakfast to cereals.

rhondajean · 20/04/2012 23:50

My kids get a chice.

Porridge, wholewheat sugar free muesli, or (my compromise) fruit and fibre.

High days and holidays maybe shredders or Cheerios ( a nod to sugar but not out and out)

I look at the cereal aisle and feel like weeping - why would people fill their children with that poison?

I'd rather they had their sugar in a sweetie on a Saturday night haha.

FallenCaryatid · 21/04/2012 00:02

'What a virtuous bunch.
I bet they're all little children.
Wait until you have teenagers. Ha.'

Really Secret Squirrels? I have one of 17 and one of 21. They eat a healthy breakfast every morning. They know it sets them up for a long day much better than sugary crapola.

Noqontrol · 21/04/2012 00:06

It's so virtuous to try and give your child healthy food isn't it Smile because crap food is just so much better.

MadameChinLegs · 21/04/2012 00:07

But surely even teenagers asking for sugary cereals you just say "get it yourself"...if its not in the house they cant eat it....or they buy their own.

FallenCaryatid · 21/04/2012 06:39

DS has crunchy nut clusters with chocolate bits on a Saturday, but not the rest of the week. Of course I'm not making breakfast for them.

ilikecandyandrunning · 21/04/2012 06:52

Well I NEVER give my kids shit in a box cereals like cocopops - why do so many parents insist on giving their kids such shit choices for breakfast and a habit for then in the morning? I will never get it. Mine have porridge with fruit puree or cereals like the one called dove cereal. The only 'bad' cereal they are occaisionally allowed mixed in is rice crispies. Never frosties or cocopops, that's just stupid.

Taffeta · 21/04/2012 07:37

You are amazing, ilikecandy - have a pat on the back.

(bad form to comment on others parenting choices when you know bugger all about people's circumstances - just sayin)

FallenCaryatid · 21/04/2012 08:06

Can I be amazing too? Please? Gwan?

DD has had vodka and chocolate for supper on a couple of occasions though...Grin

Noqontrol · 21/04/2012 08:10

Vodka and chocolate are far more discerning than shit in a box.

vvviola · 21/04/2012 08:13

Pretty much only porridge in this house, but not my choice. My Dad eats porridge for breakfast and so DD has to have "the same as grandad"... even when he's on the other side of the planet. I hate making the bloody stuff, and get told every now and then that it's not the same as Grandad makes it anyway. Sad oh well, gives me a little more leeway with the rest of her diet Grin

Mini packs of cereal are gladly accepted on special occasions & holidays... but she always goes back to the porridge!

laughlovelife · 21/04/2012 08:15

Mine dont get cereal, I have lots of boxes, (weetabix, dh homemade muesli, dove, granola, shreddies and bran flakes) but they prefer me slaving in the kitchen making them brown bread french toast, dippy eggs, omelette or scrambled eggs, followed by a smoothie of some sort (which ever fruit I have left over).

TeaOneSugar · 21/04/2012 08:26

We tend to have "healthy" cereals in mainly because DH is diabetic and I do slimming world.

DD gets those selection packs when we go on holiday, but I don't tend to buy big boxes of frosties, coco pops etc. it would take dd forever to get through a box on her own.

She often has nutella on wholemeal toast or a pancake though, which I'm sure lots of you would frown at.

Personally I prefer some protein for breakfast, keeps me fuller longer.

Chandon · 21/04/2012 08:33

Mine have the sugary cereals.

Obviously it is not a meal in itself, so they also have toast and fruit or and egg.

Why do you all care what other people give their kds for breakfast?

The ranter upthread who said my kids will be fat ugly and stupid with rotting teeth due to this choice of breakfast really made me laugh by the way.

Breakfast choices selft righteousness hurrah

2rebecca · 21/04/2012 08:40

I don't see why breakfast should be more or less healthy than other meals. On weekends I like a cooked breakfast or waffles if I have time. Am currently eating fruit bun with marmalade which isn't that healthy.
My breakfast cereal doesn't have chocolate coatings though. Usually a selection of 4 with one less healthy than the others but when that one is gone the others have to be largely eaten before i buy more of the frosties or whatever so they don't go stale. Having sugary caereals in but refusing to let your kids eat them sounds daft.

Noqontrol · 21/04/2012 08:40

I don't care what other people give their kids for breakfast. It annoys me though that if you try to feed your child a healthy diet then suddenly that makes you virtuous. What a crock of shite.

Taffeta · 21/04/2012 08:41

Exactly Chandon there are some fanatacists on this thread, for sure.

How can you people judge like this, when you know nothing of the backdrop? Take one teeny tiny aspect of parenting and rip it to pieces to make yourselves feel saintly?

eg. someone gives their children homemade sugar free muesli for breakfast and then at lunchtime they eat crisps, chocolate, cake and in the evening have a takeaway.

eg. someone's life is about to implode, they are losing their income, home and self respect. Their children are whining for Cheerios. They give in.

eg. someone's child hasn't eaten anything for 3 days. They finally eat a bowl of Cheerios and get stuck in a food jag.

etc
etc
etc

Its really incredibly crass and ignorant to call people stupid and say they make shit choices when you yourself know sod all about the background.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 21/04/2012 08:44

'healthy' cereals like shreddies and weetabix have plenty of sugar in too...

FuntimeFelicity · 21/04/2012 08:44

The idea of 'making' people do something with regards to food makes me uncomfortable. Our dc choose what they want from the cereals we have (which I've bought), followed by yoghurt and fruit if there's time. The lack of a 'forbidden' element means that they don't get excited over the more sugary ones and don't think that cocoa pops are any more more exciting than porridge. Chocolate spread/jam on soft new bread is reserved for the weekends but then so are boiled eggs.

They/we brush their teeth (which are in brilliant condition Grin) after breakfast so I'm not particularly worried.

TheSinglePringle · 21/04/2012 08:47

My son is having pasta for breakfast this morning.

He hardly eats so I give him what he wants on a morning. If he wanting co co pops he would get them.

If he wanted chocolate spread on toast he would also get that. I couldn't give 2 fucks what you all think either.

WyrdMother · 21/04/2012 08:53

I haven't read the whole 7 pages so if someone has already done this I apologise...

Me 1: Well my DD has wood shavings and rat droppings in watered down semi skimmed milk!

Me 2: Rat droppings? Watered down milk? Luxury! Luxury! Oh we used to dream of rat droppings in our corridor...

2rebecca · 21/04/2012 08:57

Why isn't cereal a meal in itself? If my kids or I have cereal during the week (which we often do as we all work/ have school so mornings are a rush, no time for faffing on with eggs etc) then a bowl of cereal is all we have. There are plenty of calories in cereal.

whoknewthat · 21/04/2012 09:00

We had breakfast war in our house, with DH saying I was 'being all Mumsnet' about their cereal choices.

He kept buying Crunchy Nut Cornflakes and Jordan's Country Crisp.

This is the same DH who doesn't think they should have too many sweets as it makes them hyper Hmm

Then I wrote the sugar %ages on the notice board along with the sugar %ages for chocolate biscuits.

He got the message. We are back to Weetabix and Shreddies. Sometimes they are allowed Cheerios in the holidays and on special weekends I make pancakes.

DollysDrawers · 21/04/2012 09:02

I give mine a frozen turkey twizzler to knaw on. On high days and holidays I defrost it first.

seeker · 21/04/2012 09:07

Well, I'm currently doing bacon and fried bread for ds. I will go to mumsnet hell.

Oh, wait, not I won't. It's only sugar that's the Devil's food.
