Apparently EVERYONE else has chocolate type breakfast cereals.

Mine have to have things like shreddies/weetabix/cornflakes/rice crisps etc etc. They are allowed honey on it.
During school holidays they choose their own cereals (frosties, coco pops type stuff)
Am I a horrible mother?

See you down there seeker. Mine had Shreddies (I'm a right bastard me)and a smoothie. I think the smoothie only had two grains of sugar though so maybe I'm OK.

TheCunningStunt · 21/04/2012 09:14

Wow.....it's Saturday morning....where are the chocolate wheetos??? Pancakes and jam, nutella....life's to short to even debate this surely.

BellaVita · 21/04/2012 09:30

Sometimes mine have homemade scones, pastries, eggy bread, bacon sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, cheese toasties.

DS2 will eat Frosties, DS1 doesn't like cereal.

They have a well balanced diet so I couldn't give a flying fig either.

BellaVita · 21/04/2012 09:31

Seeker, I bloody well love fried bread Envy

DollysDrawers · 21/04/2012 09:33

We're going to McDonalds for lunch Cunning.

Disclaimer: It's a junk food treat. I do not, and never have done, feed my children crap on a daily basis.

TheSinglePringle · 21/04/2012 09:36

Dolly Can't beat a McDonald's! I'd be having a breakfast from there if could be arsed moving Grin

Shagmundfreud · 21/04/2012 09:39

Mine have home made waffles with 70% coco solids chocolate sauce (also home made). On a school day. [preens]

Waffles are great breakfast food because they contain a fair amount of protein and not much sugar. And they is LUSH! Grin

fruityoatybar · 21/04/2012 09:50

I just give my two the sugar bowl. It cuts out the middle man. Then again I am a lazy fucker.

DollysDrawers · 21/04/2012 10:03

fruityoatybar your name suggests otherwise. I put it to you that you do, in fact, grow your own lentils to weave your children plates for their 5grams of mealy (home grown) oats that they have to breakfast.

fruityoatybar · 21/04/2012 10:13

Dolly. Nah I just give roasted nettles foraged from my garden. Far more nutritious. It's all on my meal planner.Feed a family on 50p for a month.

Mine have what they want, not worth the hassle as I want them to eat before school.

theodorakis · 21/04/2012 11:59

I love the lentil weavers! My mum was an 80s part time feminist, part time lentil weaver. One week it would be Barleycup and home made bread, then she would join a new interest, rebirthing that involved squeezing her friends naked through our sofa cushions and she would go back to coffee and fish fingers and chips. We always knew that if we just waited, the weaving machine would be forgotten to gather dust when a new interest was found. My mum is lush by the way and I love her to bits.

ivykaty44 · 21/04/2012 12:44

fred I would be interested to know about where the holes are? Have watched quite a bit of his stuff and found it very interesting.

seeker · 21/04/2012 12:49

Well, letting people think they need to eat 200g of fibre a day is a bit of a hole - that's about 150 slices of wholemeal bread!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 21/04/2012 12:53

I reckon if children are eating breakfast regularly then that is the biggest and most important thing, what they eat is mere detail.

madhairday · 21/04/2012 13:00

Coco pops are not as nice as they were when I was little. They are more salty and less chocolatey.

exexe · 21/04/2012 13:05

Also, its important for people to be informed.
If you know the facts and aren't worried about it because your kids have a good diet any way then fine but a lot of people don't realise how bad some breakfast cereals are.
Personally, I just don't think it's a great idea to start the day with on a sugar high. I'm sure it messes with your insulin levels. Thats just my opinion.

god, who can face cooking bacon and eggs first thing in the morning, never mind eating it

no thanks

FredFredGeorge · 21/04/2012 14:17

Ivykaty44 Lots of deconstructions of the lustig piece - I quite like Aran Aragon's (who's blog is good for all sorts of health reviews) here and here it's good because Lustig himself is involved in the discussion in the comments.

In general his notion is one of the absurd extension, he basically says if 100 of something is bad for you, so much 1 of something. Even though it's complete garbage as a rule of course. It could be that he's right, but the evidence he provides doesn't really live up to scrutiny. That doesn't mean all his conclusions are garbage - you shouldn't get very large amounts of your calories from processed sugar. But that's more to do with what you're not getting if you get all your calories from that.

ivykaty44 · 21/04/2012 15:53

cheers fred - I will take a look

mumeeee · 21/04/2012 16:15

Well I must have been a horrible Mum when my DDs were small. I didn't buy any sugary cereals expect for an occasional treat. Also they were not allowed to add sugar to their cereal the only exception being porridge or ready break. They are now all in their 20s and not one of them adds sugar to cereal.

ivykaty44 · 21/04/2012 16:30

Ok I have had a look, not sure I am convinced Smile It would be interesting to see the results on humans rather than rats I will agree. It would be good to have a lot of further research and also research not funded by the food industry.

I did think your quip about Lustig qualification was harsh.

ilikecandyandrunning · 21/04/2012 19:16

Yes taffeta I AM amazing and a massive pat on the back for me

  • whereas you just have a massive chip on your shoulder and a massive complex about the fact someone like me not only thinks, but KNOWS that giving kids cocopops or frosties for breakfast is a shit choice to make for your child. And to add to your massive complex issues, my kids eat healthily for their other meals too.
Taffeta · 21/04/2012 20:52

Wow. Just wow.
