To want to poke people in the eye when they say 'FAJEETAH'

This is one of those daft things that really annoys me . Why can so many people not pronounce the word fajita correctly!

Over the last 2 weeks 3 people have said this and it is adult people surely if my 6 yr old can say it then the rest of the world can? or aibu?

The final straw was today in the supermarket when the woman serving said 'Ohh You are having FAJEETAHS for tea, i just wanted to scream ITS FAHEETAH!!!!!

Obviously I didnt and politely replies 'yes I am'

The same with Jalapeno (which is pronounced, HAL-UH-PEEN-YO)

shushpenfold · 17/04/2012 17:00

YES - drives me utterly potty too!!

oldraver · 17/04/2012 17:01

Because it really doesn't matter.. I know people who say FAJEETAH, but they know the supposedly correct pronunciation but say FAJEETAH in a jokey way

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/04/2012 17:02

YANBU

Florabeebaby · 17/04/2012 17:02

Yep...makes me want to scream!

Almost as bad as people saying 'should of' instead of 'should have'!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Urgh.

Voidka · 17/04/2012 17:02

My BIL insists on pronouncing it with an accent like he is some kind of spaghetti western - its worse I tell you.

He odes the same with foods from other areas - Its always fun in the Indian restaurant we go to for his birthday.

TheCunningStunt · 17/04/2012 17:03

Please don't come to my house.....we do pronounce it correctly , but we do have a standing joke(stemming from people wrongly saying fajeeta) and we call them vageetas Blush

supernannyisace · 17/04/2012 17:05

Or VANGEETAH Grin

he he he

PandaWatch · 17/04/2012 17:06

It's Fa-GI-ta in our house. Family Guy reference.

FoofyShmooffer · 17/04/2012 17:06

I agree but on the flip side I hate when people pronounce Chorizo "choritho" Is that really how it's meant to be said? Because from anyone other than a Spanish person it sounds wanky in the extreme.

PurpleRomanesco · 17/04/2012 17:07

YANBU.

Vegeta is a character in Dragon Ball Z.

EmmaBemma · 17/04/2012 17:07

no, can't say it bothers me really. I assume the person in question hasn't heard it pronounced right before (maybe they don't watch the same Old El Paso adverts) and, you know, I cut them some slack.

MadameMessy · 17/04/2012 17:07

MIL pronounces it fa-jee-ta and we always have a little laugh at it, so now we're the ones laughing in tescos saying "will we have fajeetas this week?".
Blush I promise I know how to pronounce it properly, it's just dp and me having a laugh :)

PurpleRomanesco That made me LOL Grin

AntsMarching · 17/04/2012 17:09

Annoys me more when someone says chicken fajita. Fajita refers to a cut of beef, so you can't have chicken fajitas. I really shouldn't care, but after living in Texas for so long, I just can't bear it!

PandaWatch · 17/04/2012 17:09

What would it be in Portugal? Don't they use hard j's there? Like Jose Morinho?

this country is rife with mispronounced food words. Bruschetta - that's a K sound folks not SH.

bronze · 17/04/2012 17:10

It's one of those words I know how to pronounce but depending on mood might not say it properly. Just like I might say we are having spag-hetti bolog-naise

FourArms · 17/04/2012 17:11

Fange-eaters in this house. Looks terrible written down, but it's an ongoing joke between DH & I!

wem · 17/04/2012 17:11

DD calls them bafeetas. But she's three.

AngelWreakinHavoc · 17/04/2012 17:12

MyName Vadge-Eaters Thats so funny.

Not sure I'm going to be able to eat my FAHEETAHS now without laughing at all these funny names. My dP is going to think I'm more Bonkers than usual :o

OP - are you entirely certain you pronounce every single foreign food name correctly? Because I'm not. I can speak French, German, Italian and Spanish all well enough to pronounce food names very well indeed but I wouldn't presume to pronounce the names of foods in any language well.

MardyBra · 17/04/2012 17:14

Can I just say:

CHOREEETHO (not choritso)

Choreeeso is acceptable if you're from Andalucía.

Delia needs shooting.
