To knock on the door of every house we overlook to find out who sent this?

anchovies · 17/04/2012 08:38

Dh found a note hat had been put through the door last night/this morning:

"To the pervert!!!

Just to let you know we can see you. you're lucky my wife would rather get the police involved otherwise I would hit you. if I catch you perving again I will be round to knock you out and shut your dog up when you let it out at night"

Whoever has sent it (assuming it is someone we overlook) has walked a long way round to post it and would have had to work out where to post it.

I wouldn't have thought it was meant to be for us except we are the only people around here with a dog.

So am planning on knocking on every door this morning to find out who is threatening to knock someone out. Bad idea?

I immediately took it to mean a death or violence threat against your dog, too.

Really, you need to go to the police. Just to keep them informed. If you need help suddenly if this unhinged person loses the plot one night it will help if you have told the police. They may also be able to advise you on what to do. You are being harrassed and threatened.

spatchcock · 17/04/2012 10:42

I would definitely go to the police. They might not do anything but they will keep it on file in case there are any more threats.

Try not to worry too much. If he was that angry he would've knocked on the door already instead of leaving a cowardly, unsigned note. I doubt he'll be back to 'knock you out' but I would keep an eye on your poor dog.

GrahamTribe · 17/04/2012 10:43

I would certainly go into the garden with the dog to keep an eye on him, anchovies, as well as to prevent him barking. I'm doing a bit of wider thinking here too, could the "perving" remark relate to something other than from within the house? For example, could it relate to DH allegedly looking at someone the wrong way while on the school run or something like that? If so it doesn't necessarily mean that the culprit is one of the neighbours whose houses yours overlooks. Either way I'd be handing the note to the police if I were you no matter what the culprit does to his foot. Grin

anchovies · 17/04/2012 10:48

Ok going to make sure no more even very occasional barking from the dog or going outside unaccompanied for the time being. Taking the note to the police this morning. Am a bit freaked out now, didn't take the note as meaning that about the dog, thought it was just a random aside to the threats re perving but now I have re-read it I see what you mean :(

LentillyFart · 17/04/2012 10:50

Thing is OP - even if you weren't completely freaked by the note you should possibly consider whether the sender might move on to someone else, someone more vulnerable, in their cowardly campaign. So I think you're right to go to the Police - this kind of thing needs nipping right in the bud.

AmberLeaf · 17/04/2012 10:59

I read 'shut your dog up when you let it out at night' to mean, your dog is noisy and disturbing people!

it was preceded by and so to me that meant it was an additional gripe to the 'perving' accusation.

Go to the police deffo though.

Birdsgottafly · 17/04/2012 11:38

How late at night are you letting the dog bark to come back in?

I wouldn't just ignore the note tbh, i would either ask around or go to the police, i have seen these things escalate.

I had a situation with a neighbour and i was sorry later on that i didn't act as soon as it first started.

Catsdontcare · 17/04/2012 11:42

Hope the police take it seriously

FannyFifer · 17/04/2012 11:47

Definitely threatening to shut the dog up.

SnowieBear · 17/04/2012 12:26

Anchovies, you have to let us know what the police advised, I do hope they took it seriously.

PeppermintCreams · 17/04/2012 12:36

Could it be that they are (unreasonably) annoyed about the dog barking and making the rest of the stuff up?

anchovies · 17/04/2012 13:23

Well the police took a copy of the note and my contact details and that was it really. Suggested we contact our local police station (with PCSOs) if anything else happens. Not feeling much better about the whole thing!

OP posts:
Frontpaw · 17/04/2012 13:25

How many people do you back onto?

AmberLeaf · 17/04/2012 13:32

I really think the dog thing is just bad grammar not a threat to do in your dog!

AmberLeaf · 17/04/2012 13:34

you're lucky my wife would rather get the police involved otherwise I would hit you

Doesnt this mean they are getting the police involved though?

So they arent going to do anything agressive are they if they are planning on going to the police?

Your DH isnt a peeping tom so it will all be sorted.

Dont worry.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 17/04/2012 13:53

When you read the note as it is typed out in the first post, it reads like a threat.

"if I catch you perving again I will be round to knock you out and shut your dog up when you let it out at night"

It reads as though the note-writer is planning to do both, to come round and knock someone and and shut the dog up at the same time. You don't write it like that if it's not what you mean, you'd write "If I catch you perving again or if you don't shut your dog up I will be round to knock you out" if you were complaining about the noise.

It's a threat to hurt the people in the house and the dog if the note writer 'catches' them doing whatever it is he thinks they are doing again. And it would be easier for someone to harm the dog and get away with it than harm you or your DH.

AmberLeaf · 17/04/2012 13:58

You don't write it like that if it's not what you mean

Unless your grammar is poor.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 17/04/2012 14:04

They aren't going to go to the police though. They wouldn't write a note like that if they were going to go to the police, they would just go. Otherwise they could end up in more trouble than whoever it is they are accusing of being a pervert.

BBQJuly · 17/04/2012 14:11

Set up a camera so you can video who's coming onto your premises delivering notes? Then you'll have this evidence if there's a next time (and I hope there won't be).

TiggyD · 17/04/2012 14:45

How many people could it be? Assuming you could 'perve' them, how many houses could you perve into? Do you know how many are married?

anchovies · 17/04/2012 15:00

Three gardens join ours at the back plus the 2 sides. To be honest they are quite a way away, you can't see into houses without the lights on (does knowing that make me a perve?!) There used to be a massive conifer hedge but we had to have it taken down so am quite aware of the horrible view we now have IYSWIM.

I think it must be the house with the lab puppy just cos they are in the middle and there is an old man next door to them. The house has teenagers but it doesn't seem like something a teenager would do (too far to walk and not that funny) Can hardly see the 3rd house because of the angle.

By the way the wording on the note, I have typed it exactly as it is written. Think it could be taken either way?

OP posts:
NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 17/04/2012 15:03

It doesn't have to be anyone that the OP's house overlooks though, or anyone who is married or even a man.

The sort of person who sends anonymous, threatening letters doesn't have to tell the truth in them. They can say anything and it doesn't make it true. It's not necessarily a man or someone who is married that sent the note, it could be anyone at all, of any age.

spatchcock · 17/04/2012 16:21

They are certainly spending a good deal of time staring at YOUR house from the sound of it! What a nutter.

HermioneE · 17/04/2012 16:50

A comma or new sentence would make all the difference to that dog sentence. It could go either way at the moment, as has been said their grammar is poor. FWIW I also read it as telling you to keep your dog quiet... so I would've thought it's probably not the puppy family as it's less likely they would threaten / be annoyed by another dog.

Suggest you might want to make sure you shut your own curtains as soon as it gets dark? Not to make you paranoid, Confused but they are probably looking to see whether you're "perving" at them and see how you respond to the note. And it can't hurt to make a point of closing your curtains.

lunamoon · 17/04/2012 17:22

I took it to mean your dog is barking-so shut it up.
Are you absolutely sure that your dog isn't barking at night?
I would make sure the dog isn't out a lot as it can be as annoying as hell to hear barking, I have first hand experience of it.
Not too sure about the perving thing. I guess wait and see if you get any more notes.
