They should be using the childs full name not nicknames unless you said otherwise but if the child doesn't mind then I shouldn't see a problem there :)

I can't think why they think they have any control-they give the name and it is up to the DC. I can quite see why 'little Andy' is insisting on Andrew-a sensible boy!

When I told my neighbour my new baby DD's name- 2 syllable & old fashioned but a normal name, she said oh that's nice and what will you call her? Uuuuuhhh, her name???
I can only call people the name that they were introduced to me as. So if it is the long version then that is what they will get, if it's the short version or nickname then it will be either of those too. I guess it is kind of odd that I can't call my husband by his shortened name even though everyone else does. Have plenty of other names for him though. Grin

I took my DS into school aged 3 weeks-within minutes the DCs had shortened it-it is unrealistic to think that it won't happen.

Having a four syllable name that has only just found a fashionable foothold and which I grew into as an adult, our children were given classic, easy to spell names (ie, with no alternative spellings) which were not too unusual. They are both shortened on occasion and having grown up with a name I hated as a child that was continuously commented on, I we chose names that were classic, easy to spell and which had diminutives that we liked. My name despite being long does not lend itself to shortening. The DC might sparkle!

I am an inveterate giver of nicknames. No one has ever complained (to my face).

However. My ex dp has a very common blokeish name in its shortened form.
In its longer form it is quite dignified.
We went to see a really rubbish and patronising and frankly weird homoeopath when my dd1 was born. She attempted shortening his name. His basilisk stare and icy put down have stayed with me since. He was OUTRAGED.

I find nicknames far less annoying than people dropping the 't' in one of my dd's nicknames...

We specifically didn't call her Victoria, because we weren't keen on the name Vicky.

Child minders and teachers should use full names unless they are told it i ok or preferred that they do otherwise......IMO
