This is not a joke. Each month they visit a school and detail some of the Mums outfits. I mean I am living in the centre of Paris and am not encountering this ridiculousness

I have a disabled child and I AM the most glamorous person you will ever meet. So there.

I haven't got a big clothing budget and I don't feel poo, honest!

I look at women like these and think, Yes you look groomed/nice/whatever but it cost you £££££££'s to do so and you have zero imagination. Anyone with a platinum credit card can waltz into a designier shop and pick a frock off the shelf. It's women who can look good on £30 that have the imaginations and individuality, IMO.

Spandler · 18/04/2013 18:14

Exactly, Marmalade! And that's the kind of woman that should be included in these features too IMO

Sorry but I would be sending in hundreds of photo's if I looked like this.

I like the comment that other mothers tell her they don't understand why she bothers (although that's not quite what she's hearing though!)

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 18/04/2013 18:22

I don't know anyone that looks like that let alone on the school run.

Report
IntheFrame · 18/04/2013 18:27

No me neither.

And I wouldn't be wearing that Missoni dress anywhere near children..

Report
hobnobsaremyfavourite · 18/04/2013 18:29

how much does something like that cost?

Report
JamieandtheMagicTorch · 18/04/2013 18:35

Dunno about this really.

If you've always really cared about fahion, or just what you wear, having DCs won't stop that.

And if you are going on to work after dropping the children off, then of course you'll be a bit dressed up.

What is patronising is the whole idea of the school run being the sole focusnof any of these women's days.

Aaaaah, the school runway section on the website is nothing like the one in the magazine! I think it looks like they'll upload most pictures sent in to the website... the magazine is more picky. We're talking £6,000 of clothes to take your kid to school...

Report
JamieandtheMagicTorch · 18/04/2013 18:40

It is a bit unsisterly to criticise a mother for wearing nice clothes, UNLESS you criticise non mothers in the same way.

I agree that it should be about style, not budget.

Report
HazeltheMcWitch · 18/04/2013 18:43

Are people criticising mothers for wearing nice clothes? Most people are slagging of the feature, that presents such a false spectacle of 'reality'. Also judging those who judge others on their clothes.

On my school run it is exactly like EL... In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they rocked up with their cameras.
Mulberry & Hermes handbags, designer clothes and now the sun has come out so has all the expensive sunglasses. ..
Sigh ..

Floggingmolly · 18/04/2013 19:08

Two thirds of mums admit to wanting to look fabulous when they take their kids in. Hmm
Could the school run seriously be the social highlight of anybody's day?
Time they got out a bit in the evenings, maybe?

I did the pre-school run yesterday with the £5 price sticker still on my sunglasses. Blush

Definitely not a case of sending the photos in. And don't ask how I know Wink

I've seen said article and it kinda makes me giggle. These mums must get up at the crack of dawn to look that good and get their DCs ready?

Equally, it strikes me as very shallow to feel the need to put so much effort into an event that surely last 15 mins tops?

Hey go, nowt as queer as folk......

Or maybe they all normally look like Waynetta Slob but have scrubbed up as they knew Easy Living were coming?!

Report
MrsCampbellBlack · 18/04/2013 20:59

Or maybe they have stuff to promote and that's why they did it?

And many people dress nicely for their day to day life and the school run is just a tiny part of their day.

Honestly its just a bit of fun isn't it?

But I don't buy Easy Living - too much sex for me Wink

The whole school run experience can be challenging from reading some of the threads om here. Women dont need this to add to the many other anxieties & challenges that they have. It is sexist, is there an equivalent for men? Are men scrutinised so much for the outfits they choose to wear to collect their kids in? I am dreading my ds starting school in Sept & all the stupid school gate politics. Luckily as I will only pick up once a week & my cm will do the rest.

I like a nice outfit. I like looking at people in interestingly put together outfits. One of things I like about living in London.

But this is total shit. It makes me want to never do a school run again in protest. Fucking fucks sake. Only when I see a load of grown men looking delighted that they've been stopped because of what they are wearing will this patronising bollocks sit well with me. We're grown ups -we don't need people telling us we look all pretty in our clothes.... "Oooh look, lovely mum, all stylish and matching on the school runway. Maybe she uses scented Always as well. Let's take her picture for our magazine"

If you look like you've made a massive effort you've done it all wrong anyway.

I have just cancelled my subscription - I used to like EL a lot but it is pish now. I started subscribing in 2008, back when it was quite square but in a good, positive way - lots of practical articles about how to get stuff done, good books coverage, nice interiors ideas and recipes.

The new format is so cliched and boring - agree with previous poster re: utter cringeworthiness of the sex section ('Passion' Hmm ). I also hate the sodding 'school runway'. I happily pick up a (free) copy of Harpers, sometimes Elle too every month because I love looking at designer clothes and beautifully-styled locations, but I really couldn't give a fuck about what private school mummies are wearing on their journey from the school gates back to their 4x4s. I have no idea what EL is for any more.

Also, if I'm going to read a frivolous magazine I want it to be big, glossy, heavy and lovely, not bloody 'tablet-sized'!

someone should send a link from this thread to the EL editor because there seem to be a lot of disgruntled ex readers around. EL was great lots of indepth articles great food and no sex :) The "mystery writer" woman in EL describing her sex life is the worst bit of writing I have ever had the misfortune of paying for.

Got to hand it to Angela Kearsey - the only one not wearing skinny jeans. Grin. Good on her.

The thing is, it's people's choice whether they want to be "dressed up" for the school run. I look hideous in the morning, especially in the winter but at least I am warm.

Still, it's a cheesy feature I think.

I just piss myself at school runway- I used to think I was well to get there dressed at all ( conveniently forgetting the time I was sick down my coat after an unusually boozy night out)!

I have been a EL subscriber for many years and SR wouldn't put me off but as other posters have mentioned , the Passion section has hacked me off no end- I don't buy a woman's magazine to hear about some journos bedroom shenanigans - plus I now have to hide it in case my DH gets ideas! Just one more think for me to feel inadequate about as if being not rich thin or stylish wasn't enough!!!!
