This is not a joke. Each month they visit a school and detail some of the Mums outfits. I mean I am living in the centre of Paris and am not encountering this ridiculousness

Absolutely - I subscribe to the bloody thing and need to sort out how to get out of it - who are these women??? As for the fashion pages lately - vile, vile, vile.

I renewed my subscription the month before it changed, and I HATE the new format. It's just so superficial and meh. I think it will cease to exist in six months time - its never good when they reduce editorial content, relaunch as a new format and slash the price. (It happened to Eve too).

There's a new ed, hence the shakeup: I wouldn't assume, at all, that it's going to fold. Eve was passed from hand to hand, and She went through numerous last-ditch revamps before folding.

Haven't written for it for ages though (have in-house job on another mag at the moment) so don't have the inside goss.

I too have cancelled my subscription.
Do they not know there are mums who do school runs who shock don' live in South London?

And YY to whoever said it simply perpetuates the myth that all women should look pretty and impractical.

I think the whole "School Runway" thing is just weird; I mean, don't you just wear what you plan to wear for the day? Sometimes I turn up in a suit and heels, sometimes in jeans, sometimes in paint-splattered decorating clothes....

I do like to see features on what ordinary people are wearing, as I find it a lot more inspiring than some aspirational item on designer clothes. So if they called this regular item "what ordinary people are wearing this month" I might find it more credible. "School Runway" is a total red herring.

I've subscribed since it came out about 10 years ago, but I found a 2 year old copy the other day and was surprised by how much better it was. There is very little reading in it now. The December copy was awful. There was just pictures of gifts & nothing to read. I have just resubscribed though - £12 and a free gift of £37 of Ojon - it would have been rude not to!
BTW a mum at my DD's school trumps all the Runway Mum's for her fashion accessory - she collects her child with her pet lizard on a lead! Very popular with the reception children.

What bugs me is they have chosen women wearing high-end clothes and shoes, rather than average mums, who still look just as good as these women despite probably having a clothing budget of one tenth the size of these womens' budgets each year.

Report
Superstickybeak · 13/05/2012 09:14

Most of the mums I know look better, actually, because they are wearing clothes that look good, look practical and wouldn't elicit a laugh and a poking finger.

Why are you even reading Easy Living, Red etc?

I bought a copy of EL for the first time in ages last week and was really disappointed by the new format. I won't be buying it again.

I think "dire but hilarious" sums it up brilliantly. Half those photos featured a professional blow dry I swear it. I wish I had the guts to send in a real photo of myself....hair scraped back, glasses, face un made up (and often unwashed), joggers, jumper, puffer gilet, trainers, rucksack (I walk to work after dropping DD off). Heck, we should do it, let's flood EL with REAL school/nursery run pics and see if they have the guts to print them. MN campaign!

I loved the feature on women we are all supposed to admire.

A bunch of vacuous twits all in fashion or meja. Not a single academic, business leader, or industry figurehead.

It's completely shit and I put it in the recycling. The world needs more shallow fashion mags full of shallow women like it needs a hole in the head.

Bonsoir is right.

Here in the glamorous east midlands, there are very few of us who look good on the school run. The ones who look really smart are usually on their way to work. Us SAHM's are usually in jeans and a top that is clean. But I do live in quite a rural area. I wish I did look that glamorous.

Womans Weekly does this sort of thing quite well and chooses much older women, who usually buy their clothes from supermarkets and charity shops and look fabulous. Incidentally they are all shapes and sizes.

Each to their own but I think you'd be laughed and pointed at if you schlepped up to our school in some of those twattish get ups.

but it's al jodhpurs, Boden and Joules here!

SamuelWestsMistress · 13/05/2012 13:11

Ugh. That seems rather ghastly to be honest. Not the glam looking women but the idea of the whole feature!

I'll send them a photo of me in my stinking jodhpurs, hunters and hole ridden hooded tops, scruffy thin hair and smudged mascara (i put some on every morning just to make an effort) Wonder if they choose to feature it? The smelly horse woman at pick up style is the latest look.

I was pissed off that I didn't get the free gift this month- feel subscribers should get a better deal, not a worse one.

So... These women send in pictures of themselves...? All seems rather vain to me.

They'd love me, rocking up to the school gate at 8.30 having thrown on the nearest available pair of clean jogging bottoms and anything long enough to cover up my expanding bump. Hair pulled back or shoved under a hat. Done. I feel I've made significantly more effort than the ones who appear to have forgotten to take their PJs off and just tucked them into Ugg boots, at least.

My friend did this. She had a makeover and hair styled etc. She chose an outfit from her wardrobe which she wouldn't wear ordinarily for the school run. She looked very glamorous but it's not a true reflection at all.

I was in this feature. My friend asked me if I would be in it and I thought why not. I dropped my child off at school and had my picture taken on my way to work as a specialist on a neonatal intensive care unit. All the clothes were my own and were what I would go to work in every day. Believe it or not, I am a mum, I like wearing nice clothes, I don't have a problem with other people looking nice and I have a career.

So you searched out a 11month old thread just to make that point?
OK.

Agreed. Utterly annoyed by this for several reasons...

  1. I don't do the school run so can't relate
  2. I care less than nothing about what the "posh mum of today" is wearing
  3. They all seem to be dolled up to the nines. Where are the scruffy NORMAL mums in jeans and fleeces and trainers?

It's niche and nasty.
