To think that a Jehovah's Witness has no right to demand that I respect his beliefs when he's just rung my doorbell to bore me with his

Happy to respect the rights of people to have their beliefs, but I reserve the right to point out factual inaccuracies and scientific ignorance when it's brought to my home.

*Bad grammar. Should be "......bore me with them".

Why did he 'demand' you respect his beliefs?

JustHecate · 05/04/2012 21:11

what did you say to him to get that from him?

CaveMum · 05/04/2012 21:21

If you contact your local Kingdom Hall and tell them you do not wish to be called on they will put you on a no contact list.

LentillyFart · 05/04/2012 21:32

Ah - and these 'factual inaccuracies' and 'scientific ignorance' - they, presumably, were your beliefs were they?

Courtesy costs nothing you know.

SophieNeveau · 05/04/2012 21:34

I hope this is not going to be another thread accusing those who believe in God as feeble minded!

It is Maundy Thursday!

lordsugarslovechild · 05/04/2012 21:37

Yanbu. I am always courteous to them and normally they are ok but last bloke that came was so patronising to me about my beliefs it really pissed me off. They are no longer welcome.

SuePurblybiltFromChocolate · 05/04/2012 21:38

The ones that visit me are always lovely.

I think its fine to enter into conversation with people with strong beliefs but if they knock on your door and engage you they should be prepared for different beliefs. Otherwise there not much point in a dialogue, is there?

MrFunnytheEasterBunny · 05/04/2012 21:54

I was handed leaflets by two of my students after teaching them a lesson on evolution. I said I was very proud that they had the conviction in their beliefs to stand up and be counted, and that I did of course respect their beliefs, but that the theory of evolution by natural selection was the one accepted by the scientific community, and whether they believe it or not, they will still be expected to answer questions on it in the exam.
We both left the room happy.

I have no problem at all with people telling me/ showing me what they believe, but I do also expect them to pay me the same courtesy, so I think YANBU.

Oh and for what it's worth, my uncle is a JW and we regularly have interesting discussions about his beliefs vs my trust in science! It's very interesting indeed, shame the guy who came to your door didn't think so - my uncle loves discussing it with me!

I think the door to door thing is a bit odd. Plus all their leaflets have terrible artwork on them. I think it is good to talk fairly naturally to people you actually know about your beliefs with a view to converting them if you want to but it is quite an inconvenience at times with strangers at the door.

CaveMum · 05/04/2012 22:05

The calling door to door is key to their beliefs. They are commanded to spread the word and calling on people in their homes is the easiest way to do this.

lordsugarslovechild · 05/04/2012 22:08

It may be easiest but maybe not the most effective. Mind you, they seem rich enough.

MariaCallous · 05/04/2012 22:11

D0G - wish I could do smileys.

CaveMum · 05/04/2012 22:12

If it wasn't effective they wouldn't do it. My mum was converted by someone knocking at the door, though granted she was in an emotional place as her father had recently died.

They're not rich though, not sure how you came to that conclusion.

lordsugarslovechild · 05/04/2012 22:14

I only think they are rich because they have so many Kingdom Halls. Needs finance.

CaveMum · 05/04/2012 22:18

I don't know how they find the purchase of land, but most Kingdom Halls are built by volunteers. My mums Kingdom Hall was recently rebuilt, they did it in 5 days!

CaveMum · 05/04/2012 22:18

find = fund

lordsugarslovechild · 05/04/2012 22:22

I didn't know that. Sounds amazing.

Chilenachica · 05/04/2012 22:29

Look, I've just had a full week of my, former, live-in maid alternating between screaming about the devil and his fornicación in relation to my soul - which she is very fervently trying to Save- and breathlessly telling me that said devil will not succede because of God's almigthy power. If only I would open my heart and ask for forgiveness.

So, given the fact that this bod was outside your door, yep YABU - sorry

CatPussWithACrownOfThorns · 05/04/2012 22:30

My dad is on the JW 'quick build' team. Such a large society, has members from every type of employment, and they all get together. It's an eye opener to see how a cooperative team of people can build such a large structure so quickly. It puts normal builders well and truly to shame!
