Myself and DP went to do our weekly shop last night in the local supermarket.
We had both been to work then I went to the gym, he went running. By the time we finished it was getting quite late so decided to just go in our tracksuits then shower and change when we get back home.
We regularly shop in this supermarket so never gave it a moments thought until last night.
From the moment we walked in the security guard looked at us and got straight on his radio, then the whole time we were in there the staff seemed to be milling around us. Got to the checkout and the lady who served us didn't even speak until she wanted payment.
Then we went to the customer service desk (they had an offer on if you spend over a certain amount you can get disney cards for the little ones) only to be ignored! The lady actually looked at us then carried on talking to her mate!
By this time I was frothing at the mouth!

Did they think we were chav's intending to steal something just because we were wearing tracksuits???

Doubleglazing - you are spot on

bejeezus · 04/04/2012 22:44

Haha! Booy -see, you have a fundamental misunderstanding right there! No- I don't buy clothes to go with other clothes have I have or might have.......

scottishmummy · 04/04/2012 22:44

yes and by chosing clothes you like you're making a statement
you have selected and chosen how you want to look
it simply wasn't functional, stoat to first place, grab and go
like all of us you have a preference for what you like, and this intrinsically
reflects a look you will be judged upon

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/04/2012 22:44

Interesting that some do not think that clothes that they chose because they liked them says nothing about them to others! Maybe it tells others the sort of things you like, i.e. your tastes, and therefore a bit about the person you are? Maybe even what colours you choose (bright multiple colours versus all in black, say) say something about you.

bejeezus · 04/04/2012 22:46

But those of us that don't give a damn-wouldnt be judging other people in that way Booy

Or I'm guessing we wouldnt-i wouldnt-like I said, rarely notice what people are wearing

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 22:49

so you never get dressed in the morning and choose one top over another, ou really do just grab the first thing that comes to hand and the same with trousers/skirt and shoes? ou dont ever think, "no that top doesn't go with these jeans"?

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 22:50

agree whereyouleftit

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 22:53

also just want to say that 5 out of 7 days i do just grab a jumper and a pair of trousers and go to make sure ds is at school on time. but i am totally aware that people can see i have made no effort and will be making judgements. i know this is letting them know something about me even though i haven't chosen those specific items to send out a message. the very fact i didn't choose them with any thought is the message that is being sent out.

usualsuspect · 04/04/2012 22:54

I reckon people think mutton dressed as lamb when they see me, judging by the 'what not to wear when you are over 40 threads on MN'

bejeezus · 04/04/2012 22:59

I choose clothes which are washed. And dry...

I know that some people enjoy clothes and she's and outfits and style/fashion.

I have no interest. It doesn't cross my mind that people are judging me by my clothes. I don't care if they are. But be sure, not all of us are making those judgements

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/04/2012 23:00

But IAmBooyhoo, even when you ^"just grab a jumper and a pair of trousers and go", you are grabbing a jumper and trousers that you liked enough to buy. Your choice of trousers over a skirt/shorts/trackie bottoms is a preference. Similarly a jumper rather than a tshirt/polo/sweatshirt.

usualsuspect · 04/04/2012 23:03

So you judge every single person you meet on what they are wearing?

usualsuspect · 04/04/2012 23:04

What a awful way to live your life.

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 23:04

oh yes i agree whereyouleftit, most of my clothes are actually hand me downs from my sister but even then i still choose which ones i want to wear and which i will pass on to someone else/charity shop.

what i was trying to say to those that say they dont choose what to wear in the morning was that they are still sending out messages by not specifically selecting an outfit, they are sending out the message that matching clothes aren't important or that fashion isn't important etc.

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/04/2012 23:07

usualsuspect Undoubtedly. Without even realising it consciously. Just as I undoubtedly register their body language, their voice, their eye contact, what they talk about. We all notice lots of things about each other and our surroundings unconsciously.

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 23:08

yes usual, i judge everyone solely on what they wear Hmm

no of course i dont judge everyone just on their clothes but my first impression of someone will be what i can see, and part of what i can see will be their clothing so the clothing will form part of the initial judgement i make. i dont think i am particularly odd in that.

scottishmummy · 04/04/2012 23:09

by purposefully choosing not to care about what worn, you send a clear signal and image to others

Im not sure why some are at such pains to assert clothes matter not a jot,and they don't judge

we all judge.consciously and unconsciously

usualsuspect · 04/04/2012 23:09

So do you dress to impress other people then?

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 23:10

i do, yes.

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/04/2012 23:11

IAmBooyhoo I absolutely agree. I wonder if I see the word 'judge' differently from others here. For me, to judge something is to size it up, not to condemn it. I can judge something as being to my liking! But I'm still judging it.

usualsuspect · 04/04/2012 23:13

What if you saw me in my awful work uniform? you wouldn't have a clue what I usually dress like , that would confuse your assuptions Grin

IAmBooyhoo · 04/04/2012 23:13

and i dont believe for one second that you never dress with what other people will think in mind. weddings, funerals, dates (if ou are single, i dont know if ou are), meals in a restaurant, etc etc

usualsuspect · 04/04/2012 23:14

I pretty much always wear jeans tbh

kipperandtiger · 04/04/2012 23:15

If you didn't have hoods over your heads, then those people are over-reacting. Is it a very quiet town?? Lol.

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/04/2012 23:15

usualsuspect, I also wear a uniform to work, as do all my colleagues - but we all wear it subtly differently (shoes, hair, jewellery, ironed or not) and so the signals are still there to be seen.
