Just seen him on the news, he strikes me as an opportunistic slimy bully but maybe I misunderstand him and he really is a good guy on the side of the oppressed. Please can someone enlighten me if my dislike is mislplaced.

I think you may be right LR.

Whatmeworry · 30/03/2012 09:19

Whatmeworry unless he has undergone a major transformation since the last time he held office, then sadly he wont. IMO you get good and bad constituency MPs in all parties, but GG just isn't interested. The man is good at getting elected, but a really poor public servant.

I have no doubt that he is an egocentric a*hole, but they all are - the difference is that he is an independent egotistical a*hole who is good at getting nmedia coverage.

IMO those complaining about him have to ask why it a person like him can get in, and with a huge majority to boot.

theodorakis · 30/03/2012 09:33

Did anyone else hear David Blunket on Today this morning? When asked about his party's defeat he said that his first emotion was joy that people are using their vote to ask for change rather than rioting. I think that was a very good point. The turnout was very high, that has to be good. (caveat-I know you could say the same about the BNP winning but it is not the same in my eyes)

lizziebennet · 30/03/2012 09:34

Whatmeworry I agree that this is the question. My understanding is that Respect came 4th there in 2010, so what's going on? I know that by-elections can often get very strange indeed and I understand that there was some sort of sad incident regarding a member of the Respect campaign team that seems to have garnered sympathy in the community, but yes, I'm a member of the Labour Party and we do need to ask ourselves about the disconnect that's going on here when you get a result like that.

LineRunner · 30/03/2012 09:40

I couldn't connect at all to Douglas Alexander (Lab) last night on Questiontime.

lizziebennet · 30/03/2012 09:45

I thought he did pretty well, certainly compared to Sarah Teather and Anna what's her name. A few answers could have been a bit more direct, but at least he wasn't wearing a leotard!

LineRunner · 30/03/2012 09:51

Sarah Teather gave an utterly weird performance. You can see in her the total arrogant denial and isolation of the Cleggites even within their own Lib Dem Party.

noddyholder · 30/03/2012 09:56

It will be interesting to see if he can put aside his world politics ad actually do something for local people somehow I doubt it. But he is a media whore and so Bradford will definitely get more coverage good and bad. I wonder if he will base himself there

He went on big brother while he was supposed to be MP for tower hamlets - not exactly serving his constituents well!
I think the description of egotistical slimy toad sums him up well!

Whatmeworry · 30/03/2012 10:03

Loved that Sara Teather didn't realise the burning houses quip was a joke. Immediate dismissal reason IMO

And that QT's best performer was Simon wotsit shows how sad the current politicos are.

LineRunner · 30/03/2012 10:12

Whatmeworry, I thought Sarah Teather night have known the burning houses quip was meant to be a joke, but didn't like having the piss taken out of her (she is after all A Government Minister ); so (stupidly) pretended to not realise it was a joke, to try to make the joker look foolish.

Kind of, 'I won't understand your comment because you are merely a dimwitted unfunny audience member, and I shall therefore adopt this po-faced and contemptuous attitude.'

But it backfired on her. Dear old David Dimbleby.

Whatmeworry · 30/03/2012 10:16

I met her once, she had no sense of humour at all then either (and the occasion wasn't formal). And she wasn't A Government Minister at the time :)

lizziebennet · 30/03/2012 10:17

We do know that jokes are not her forte:

LineRunner · 30/03/2012 10:25

I had to turn that off, lizziebennet. Too cringe-making. Grin

I wonder if George Galloway is being lined up for a future Questiontime?

eurochick · 30/03/2012 10:29

I predict he will do sweet FA for his constituents now they have elected him.

I notice that he never stands for election in areas where the majority of the population is well-educated and politically well-informed. He prays on the weakest portions of society in order to promote his own interests.

AbsofAwesomeness · 30/03/2012 10:29

YANBU

He is an egotistical, self-serving, slimy, dictator-friendly, anti-semitic cunt

slug · 30/03/2012 10:54

Have had the great misfortune to have met gorgeous George in a variety of situations, both professional and social. I'm always amazed that he manages to get his head through the door.

He does enjoy playing the great white man come to save the downtrodden minorities role. What really gets up my nose is the way he does it, by pandering to the more restrictive elements at the expense of the, dare I say it, women. I often think of him as the Sarah Palin of UK politics.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 30/03/2012 10:55

YANBU... Local voters were saying they hoped he'd fix problems with poorly performing schools and unemployment in the area. But his Respect representative on the Today Prog this morning said she fully supported the Taliban's right to resist the presence of British troops in Afghanistan. Vile con-artists with a very nasty agenda that has nothing to do with helping the people of West Yorkshire

DinahMoHum · 30/03/2012 11:08

I absolutely love George Galloway. Although wouldnt want to be on the wrong side of him in an argument

DinahMoHum · 30/03/2012 11:09

haha, im the only one.

story of my life ;)

Cherriesarelovely · 30/03/2012 11:33

OP you have expressed exactly how I feel about him. UGH. I cannot believe he has just been elected as an MP again.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 30/03/2012 12:40

Glad I'm not such a bad judge of character. Grin Gutted I missed Question Time, sounds entertaining.

Hobnobs, You can watch it (Questiontime) on I Player. But it was quite dull really in parts, though in an interesting way.
