Not to shower every day?

Sausagedog27 · 28/03/2012 23:17

Just looking at threads about drought and how long it takes people to get ready and it got me thinking. I shower every other day (unless of course I've been particularly active or done something requiring need to shower ie gardening). I don't smell (as far as I know- dh says I don't!) all my other friends shower daily. Is this something we need to do daily or is it a society thing? I remember parents saying it was a weakly bath for them etc. with the drought situ I'm just wondering if this is contributing. Would you daily showerers consider reducing? Hmmmmm!

I bath or shower every other day. I wash my hair once a week. My hairdresser always comments on what fantastic condition it's in - which can be attributed to infrequent washing, no heat treatments and no products. It's on day 3 at the moment and it looks fine - in fact someone commented this morning on how nice it looks today.

I have better things to do with my time than damage my hair through unnecessary over-washing

porcamiseria · 29/03/2012 15:52

I have a friend who washes less.

I love her, BUT

she can be whiffy, and her house aint all that clean either

I am in the wash daily camp

somewherewest · 29/03/2012 17:06

Every second day because its not like I ever do enough exercise to get sweaty

CremeEggThief · 29/03/2012 17:17

I find I really appreciate being clean when I shower every other day too. I just take it for granted when I do it every day. Probably just me though!

NarkedPuffin · 29/03/2012 18:08

Unwashed skin gives off that waxy, stale animal fat smell

NarkedPuffin · 29/03/2012 18:10

We need someone to sniff an unwashed vegan to see if they smell like that ^ too, or if it's a product of a meat/dairy eater's diet

TeiTetua · 29/03/2012 18:19

Heavens, how did people survive back when you got a bath once a week whether you needed it or not?

Ah, it's global warming. We need more baths now. That must be it.

KatieScarlett2833 · 29/03/2012 18:24

I shower every 2 days, inbetween it's soapy flannel for bits and underarms.

Clean clothes every day though.

I smell like springtime (or Daisy perfume).

TheEarlOfDoncaster1963 · 29/03/2012 18:25

You do know this is really bad for your skin in the long run? You're stripping it of essential oils that keep it flexible and youthful. Also, it is just a total waste of water. Smacks of OCD... how on earth can you get 'dirty' in 15 hrs or so, unless you work down a mine?!

I shower every other day, but I have three kids so sometimes there just isn't time so it'll be the next day. The world doesn't end. I don't smell. I wash below the waist every day even if it's just with a babywipe or something. Wash my hair every other day but wish I could get away with less. Jeez - life's too short to go round sniffing other people and getting on your high horse.

shinecrazydiamond · 29/03/2012 18:31

Bogey - christ, no. I wouldn't change sheets daily - no need as i shower daily and then bath at night remember? Usually twice a week tops. The kids beds i do just the once a week.

the earl - welll... you obviously have never seen me but I promise you, i have very good skin and always have done, despite a few decades of washing it daily. i don't sniff other people and they can wash as often as they like as far as im concerned.

I categorically do NOT have OCD... I just like to feel clean, fresh, smell sweet and would much rather be judged for being clean than the reverse Grin

I find living in London to be hugely dirtier than in the country

So my contact lenses grime up a lot more
My face is much dirtier
My hair suddenly needs washing everyday
And I sweat more in the tube

KatieScarlett2833 · 29/03/2012 18:34

I change my main pillowcase daily Blush

I perhaps have linen OCD tho.

MrsCampbellBlack · 29/03/2012 18:42

I am so with Shiney on this - I even have a bath if having to get up really early - say for a flight and wash and blowdry my hair too.

And regular washing of your hair with a good shampoo doesn't make your hair greasy - it very much depends on the type of hair you have. Thicker/curly hair needs washing less often than very fine hair.

But I can bath, do hair, make up etc very very quickly.

shinecrazydiamond · 29/03/2012 18:47

I have fine, highlighted hair which is greasy at the roots and dry at the ends and looks bloody awful if left for over a day.

Agreed mrsCB - I don't get the point of pride in having a strip wash with a baby wipe every second week Wink Also...i have tried the baby wipe thing and it stings a bit and makes your bits feel yuk!

Bonsoir · 29/03/2012 18:47

Like MrsCampbellBlack I have a bath, hair wash and blow dry every morning, whatever time I have to get up. I would feel truly disgusting if I didn't!

Helltotheno · 29/03/2012 18:52

i don't sniff other people

I don't actively either. My acute sense of smell means smells are forced on me whether I want them or not :(

Can't understand the 'where do you find the time' brigade. The whole process of showering, dressing, bit o' slap on the face etc takes me about 10 minutes, maybe 15 if the hair is washed too. I can defo build that into my life no matter how much I have on..

sandyballs · 29/03/2012 18:56

My mum hasn't washed her hair since July and it doesn't smell, suprisingly!

complexnumber · 29/03/2012 19:06

With practice, and when needs must, you can have a pretty good wash in little more than half a bucket of water.

I know as that's what I did in a Nigerian village for 2 years.

2 buckets a day was enough to wash cook and clean.

We (and I include myself) are outrageously wasteful with our water usage, it is not an entitlement just because we pay a meter.

(Oops. Did anyone just hear my halo shattering!)

shinecrazydiamond · 29/03/2012 19:07

Yes, Hell... I find that I don't have the time to walk about unclean!

Geranium3 · 29/03/2012 19:16

2showers a day girl here though i'm very quick! 5mins on average, love my showers!

hairytaleofnewyork · 29/03/2012 19:36

Every day.

Do the alternative dayers wash their parts and pits on the days they don't shower?

JasperJohns · 29/03/2012 19:39

I'm in the bath now and I had a shower this morning!

My dear friend has a bath before bed then nothing in the morning. She has that eau de biscuit.

Mrbojangles1 · 29/03/2012 19:53

Sorry but those who don't wash every day are foul

We are women who have periods and discharge and what ever any one says it smells and WIlL go stale if not cleaned

Yuk

Sorry but people you need to wash you fango daily especially when you are on your cycle

Mrbojangles1 · 29/03/2012 19:53

Stale blood reeks

EssentialFattyAcid · 29/03/2012 19:59

What percentage of folk in everyday life would you all judge to be smelly?
