Not to shower every day?

Just looking at threads about drought and how long it takes people to get ready and it got me thinking. I shower every other day (unless of course I've been particularly active or done something requiring need to shower ie gardening). I don't smell (as far as I know- dh says I don't!) all my other friends shower daily. Is this something we need to do daily or is it a society thing? I remember parents saying it was a weakly bath for them etc. with the drought situ I'm just wondering if this is contributing. Would you daily showerers consider reducing? Hmmmmm!

I don't shower every day, I do wear make up and clean clothes though!

Bogeyface · 29/03/2012 10:42

Lol Shiney! Cissy was the posh one I think, Ada was Les Dawson :o

Shiney, am I right in thinking you change all the bed clothes in your house on a daily basis?!

I shower every other day unless it has been particularly hot, in which case I may shower twice a day. Kids have baths once or twice a week. Also when I shower I turn off the shower while I soap myself down and turn it on again to rinse off the soap/ conditioner. I don't have flannel washes in between and agree this is more faff than a shower - but it does use less water and my parents do this daily and have only rare baths and showers and are very clean.

Our water usage is 40% less than the average household of our size, according to the water company - and we have a dishwasher used once a day, and I do about 7 loads of washing a week.

SoupDragon · 29/03/2012 11:28

I shower every second day. In winter it is sometimes every third day depending how cold it is in the bathroom!

LauraShigihara · 29/03/2012 11:34

I'm standing in the LeQueen corner on this. Would it kill you ever-other-day-ers to have a five minute shower every day? Just to sluice down those body juices?

Helltotheno · 29/03/2012 11:39

Sweat itself doesn't actually smell. It only smells when it mixes with bacteria present on your skin. However, your skin sheds dead cells all the time, and sebum, and sweat...tiny excretions of wee and poo congregate round your privates, no matter how carefully you wipe

Yes and those things SMELL! People think we're just talking sweaty pits here... stand downwind of someone and you'll definitely notice an 'unclean skin' smell and yes, hair (well it's actually unclean scalp) DOES smell, especially long thick hair, unless washed reasonably often.

The cold section in a supermarket is a great place for smelling unwashed people in case anyone's interested...

The whole idea of using a flannel over a sink.. sheesh just get a shower cap on and hop in the shower already..

Whatever about winter, I cannot understand people not showering at least once a day in summer.

It wouldn't kill me but I don't see what possible benefit it would have given no-one would notice either way, I'd be massively adding to the water bill and further contributing to the severely low water levels in the south east of England.

Turning it on its head. To the shower every day lot: Would it kill you to use less water, reduce your water bill and impact on the environment?

What the hell is wrong with body juices? Are you the same people who on another thread, found sex a bit messy and icky, and didn't have breakfast in bed because of the crumbs?

LittleWhiteMice · 29/03/2012 11:41

i wash my hair twice a week and bath 3 times a week.

I dont smell and I (crucially) dont care what other people think of my hygeine routine.

I dont tell anyone and noone questions my smell so i guess all must be fine and dandy

LittleWhiteMice · 29/03/2012 11:42

Also if you are worried about small bits of poo and wee just use water to clean your parts, rather than tissue which to me is far less hygenic

Helltotheno · 29/03/2012 11:43

Nobody EVER questions smell Little, it's the big taboo....

:)

startail · 29/03/2012 11:44

Shower when dirty simplesGrin

DH showers when nagged, very annoying !

eurochick · 29/03/2012 11:44

I shower every morning but only wash my hair every other day. The condition was getting bad when I was blow drying it every day. I can smell my scalp if I touch it by the end of the second day (but hope no one else can) and would hte to leave it longer.

ifancyashandy · 29/03/2012 11:45

LeQueen, I went out last night and feel slightly, ahem, jaded.

Your post has made me feel even more Envy

LittleWhiteMice · 29/03/2012 11:45

so just because i dont shower everyday and noone mentions i smell it means that i do?

whereas nobody mentions you smell because you shower every day?

no.

Helltotheno · 29/03/2012 11:52

People are very, very reluctant to tell someone they smell... plenty of posts re this in relationships. I have worked in places where bosses have had to tell people they smell and it's not bloody easy.

Ok I'm not saying you do, I'm just pointing out that the fact is, we can't smell ourselves. Yes we can raise our arms and smell our pits and establish that all is fine but there are specific smells that we can't smell on ourselves..

I shower every day and sometimes more (cos of exercise) which just means I'm doing all I can to prevent myself smelling... I would not be confident of that if I didn't shower when I do and even I if couldn't specifically smell anything from myself.

snowbellblues · 29/03/2012 11:54

LeQueen :) :)

LittleWhiteMice · 29/03/2012 11:58

maybe you sweat and smell more than i do?

I guess peoples bo is their own, im confident i dont smell as even when i exercise i dont really sweat.

thestringcheesemassacre · 29/03/2012 11:59

I can't imagine leaving it 3 days to shower. MINGING!
I shower daily. Even for 5 mins.
Hair washed every second day.
Sheets changed once a week.
Towels done twice a week.
THE END.

PS you stink otherwise.

kmdwestyorks · 29/03/2012 12:02

Startail-why do we have to nag them? I change the bed sheets more often in summer just to drive home the point he's only allowed in the bed after a bath!

he complains about the lack of BJ's in his life and i point out the direct link them and the number of showers and it still doesn't help!

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 29/03/2012 12:08

Shower and wash hair every other day and a 'navy shower' (water off while 'sudsing') at that! I have encouraged my dd (12) to do the same. DS (7)bath every other night. On the non-shower days I will have a 'top and tail' wash, probably in the shower tray but just with a couple of shampoo bottles full of water. Our fuel bills are very low for the size of our house. Not on metered water but always try to save anyway cos it's the green thing to do.
I shower or bath after exercise (running/hockey) but this usually fits in to my alternate day regime anyway!

Helltotheno · 29/03/2012 12:08

i dont really sweat

You do cos if you didn't, you'd be dead! It doesn't have to be big droplets y'know!
Anyway I'm sure you smell as sweet as lilies... just pointing out that we can't smell ourselves so in effect we don't know what our scent is to anyone else...
