No. It is unlikely.

It depends on how fit you are, and whether you follow the instructions regards to the resistance used.

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 26/03/2012 16:28

You wont die - just push yourself as much as you want to!

hillyhilly · 26/03/2012 16:30

I went for the first time in 15yrs last week, it was fine! I was bright red by the end but you are in control of how much resistance is on the bike so you don't have to try and do more than you are capable of. I'm doing it again tomorrow do it can't have been that bad!

Hammy02 · 26/03/2012 16:30

Go for it. But be careful. My brother runs half marathons and he finds spinning classes pretty difficult!

DartsAgain · 26/03/2012 16:33

You won't die, but I came across a recent report about how some women were experiencing orgasms when doing exercises that work stomach muscles like spinning does...Grin I've not tried it yet.

goatshavestrangeeyes · 26/03/2012 16:33

I'm guessing the instructor will know if you have the bike at a lower resistance? My fitness levels are not bad i just need to shift my baby weight.

I've never been before so haven't a clue about it. All i can do is try it and see if i like it.

You won't die but don't be tempted to go bonkers in your first class.

It's really challenging and a friend of mine was hospitalised after one session!

OldGreyWiffleTest · 26/03/2012 16:34

Ah, I thought you were talking about sheep's wool and yarn!

I go spinning and I am still alive. The instructor will want you to go at your own pace so that you come back to the class again rather than overdoing it on the first session and hating it. Take it easy on your first time though as it is quite tiring!

Ragwort · 26/03/2012 16:41

I love it (and nothing to do with Chaotic's comments Grin) - I am not particularly fit and about a stone and a half overweight but I have been going spinning for a few weeks now and think its great - the first time I went I found it really tough but you soon get used to it and it is a great calorie burner - you can go at your own pace, you don't have to go really fast or have the resistance up too high. I much prefer it to Zumba or any other 'dance style' class, I go about five times a week Blush boring person.

emsyj · 26/03/2012 16:45

I think it's fun, you will like it as long as you don't try and push yourself beyond what you're able to do the first time.

The instructor is unlikely to be able to tell how strong your resistance is unless he/she has amazingly sharp vision and can see exactly how close the brakes are to your flywheel! It is easier to have some resistance on though, otherwise your legs will just whip round - a bit of something to pedal against (particularly in the standing sections) will make it easier.

Enjoy!

JasperJohns · 26/03/2012 16:51

I love spinning - I would agree with others and say don't push yourself too hard.

But don't make the mistake of having the resistance too light, you should be able to keep your upper body still with no bouncing or wobbling. And if you're standing don't have the resistance too light as you can hurt your knees.

I hope you enjoy - it gives me a real buzz.

aquashiv · 26/03/2012 17:02

I spin its as hard as you make it. Gets you really fit quickly.

Ambrosius · 26/03/2012 19:30

I can't believe noone has mentioned how much your bum and fanjola will hurt after!
Its a great workout though! Thoroughly recommend it :)

ChaoticAngel · 26/03/2012 21:23

Grin Ragwort.

When you're single you take what you can get Wink

Seriously though this spinning thing is sounding better with each post. I really need to find a way to get fit.

QuintessentialShadows · 27/03/2012 18:39

anyone seen the op since yesterday? Is she alive? Grin

MorrisZapp · 29/03/2012 09:20

Five times a week ragwort! You ain't gonna be carrying extra weight for long. Am dying to hear how quickly you see results.

MorrisZapp · 29/03/2012 09:24

As an aside, I used to go to spinning regularly, but dropped it as it was giving me massive thighs! Or should I say massiver thighs?

It is a phenomenal calorie burn but it also pumped up the front of my thighs and my jeans got tighter, not looser.

No doubt if I had really stuck at it I'd have seen some fat loss to compensate. These days I do combat and attack instead though.

DartsAgain · 29/03/2012 09:33

I go swimming 3 times a week, but I might even look into spinning as well now, despite my comment earlier...Grin I swim for 1km each time (can do 1km in 40 mins), but I know I can do with more exercise (am very overweight).

DartsAgain · 29/03/2012 09:45

I just found this about the Tabata Protocol. It looks scary, but apparently is only a few minutes a day.

OatcakeCravings · 29/03/2012 09:49

You might...

Ragwort · 29/03/2012 11:21

MorrisZapp - I will let you know, still rather fat but that is more to do with my eating habits stuffing a mars bar Grin. Just off for another spin class ......

Darts - tabata is really exhausting fun - we do it 'spin style' as well.

BelieveInPink · 29/03/2012 13:21

I LOVE Spinning. The first time I went I thought I might possibly die but I am a very competitive person so kept up with everyone else.

I love everything about it; the darkness, the disco lights, the loud power workout music, the way I can feel that it's doing me good.

I do a lot of running but I don't enjoy it as much as spinning. I loathe the gym, so boring.

DartsAgain · 29/03/2012 13:23

Given I've got 5 stone to lose, any additional exercise can only be good for me.....Grin
