....and from the age of 50.

Other public sectar workers get nothing remotely resembling that.

There has always been anecdotal evidence that many officers die very soon after retiring. This is now evidenced by figures released from the Govt Actuary Department. They show that police pension calculations and contributions are based on an average life expectancy of 85, whereas GAD have released figures which show life expectancy for male officers is 70, and for female officers it is 60.

Basically, a lot of people are paying 16% salary into pensions which they may never live to see, or may only enjoy for a few years.

YABU. Nothing to stop those who complain from applying to join the police.

BarryNormansSofa · 26/03/2012 16:40

Ditto Vicar !

Confused
BarryNormansSofa · 26/03/2012 16:42

MN please come on and explain each deleted message !

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 17:05

BarryNormansSofa...your message was deleted because "fuck off" is a personal attack.

And those saying that there's, "Nothing to stop those who complain from applying to join the police" need to understand that the pay and pensions are too high irrespective of whether a person is in the police or not. Only a selfish and hypocritical person would say that joining suddenly changes them from being absurd to reasonable.

RebeccaMumsnet · 26/03/2012 17:05

Hi all,

As we say in each deleted message 'Message deleted by Mumsnet for breaking our Talk Guidelines. Replies may also be deleted.'

Vicar, your post contained a personal attack which is against our guidelines and was removed, as did yours Barry.

If you would like specific info on what was posted and why it was removed then please do report your post and we will happily explain it further if anything is still unclear.

Best wishes

MNHQ

TapirBackRider · 26/03/2012 17:09

Ok Badger - compared to what precisely? Police put ther lives on the line every day, what other job would you bracket them along with?

BarryNormansSofa · 26/03/2012 17:11

Dear MN I accept the 'fuck' off my what about my other posts ?

Nothing in there surely - have seen far worse on MN please explain further deleted posts.

NarkedPuffin · 26/03/2012 17:12

I got deleted with good reason Grin

Pay good wages to get good candidates. Possibly the only thing Thatcher did right.

BerylStreep · 26/03/2012 17:13

Oh, and Lougle, excellent post (from a thousand pages back) - you seem to know your facts (unlike some Hmm).

DeepPurple · 26/03/2012 17:14

I haven't told anyone to fuck off Confused why was my post deleted?

whencanigohome · 26/03/2012 17:14

Badger - 'pay and pensions are too high'.

They are 'absurd'.

Evidence and justification please.

TapirBackRider · 26/03/2012 17:17

whencanigohome

Badger has none - and is apparently using 'data' from the daily fail......Hmm
There is an axe to grind there, methinks, judging from the inflammatory posts and refusal to provide reasonable evidence.

DeepPurple · 26/03/2012 17:17

OP would you prefer your pension and contributions to be higher or police officers lower?

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 17:21

whencanigohome I'm not going to produce thoroughly researched and referenced evidence for the sake of a Mumsnet discussion, sorry!

But let's just say that the police I know, have read about and have come across, have qualifications, skills and experience that in no way warrant the pay. Retiring at the age they do, on the terms they do, would be absurd whoever they were.

I'm sorry if this doesn't meet your evidential standards, but I don't have time to write page upon page to appease you.

TakenYears · 26/03/2012 17:23

Good grief - what's been going on here whilst I've been at work!! And by the way it's a tough day on an acute medical ward. I'll be working my arse off untill I'm 67 at this rate - 17 years after police officers retire!

Sorry but I still don't see the justification why government allow the ploce to retire at 50 and why their pension packages are so much better than mine, when they've only paid a few percentage more in contributions. We ALL know the tax payer is paying huge amounts towards police pensions - they are NOT self funding!

There are very few counter arguments going on here at all.

If you've got a counter argument - give it, but if you can only resort to 'put down' tactics I can't be bothered with it.

OP posts:
Hecubasdaughter · 26/03/2012 17:26

Surely if you only paid 15K to police officers you would not only reduce recruitment but adversly affect retention also. IMO it is in the public interest to have a police force that is experienced, skilled and not overly demoralised.

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 17:26

Absolutely correct TakenYears

TapirBackRider · 26/03/2012 17:33

Then let me ask this.

Is there anything at all I could say to make you see my point of view, namely that police pay and pensions are justified because of the nature of their job?

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 26/03/2012 17:35

It's NOT a few percent! You're paying 5-ish %, they're paying 11 or so %. Their rate of contributions is TWICE yours.

This is such a bizarre thread.

gettingeasier · 26/03/2012 17:38

Good grief Badger you come storming onto the thread all guns blazing to double the number of people who share your point of view to a total of two and when asked to provide some kind of evidence for this you loftily announce you have better things to do .

Brilliant Grin

TakenYears · 26/03/2012 17:39

Yes, TapirBackRider. I take that on board. And for that I'm OK with the police getting a superior pension package to mine. But as it is right now it is disproportiately superior...and unfair.

OP posts:
DPrince · 26/03/2012 17:40

OP no one is going to change your mind. You have said its not down to facts and figures and your not deeming the job police do. I don't get how the feck you can moan when you don't even know how much you pay in.

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 17:43

Jenai Forget the % argument. Let's do some basic maths to illustrate a point.

Policeman/woman gets 30k a year (way too much anyway, but that's another story) and pays 11% a year. So 3300 a year for 30 years = £99000. These are simplified figures to prove the point.

How many years does that pay for at TWO THIRDS of final salary? That's right, about 5! They can retire in their late 40s and live for another FIFTY years!

And TapirBackRider, I have no idea who your question is directed at, but there is nothing whatsover that could make me see your point of view.

BerylStreep · 26/03/2012 17:43

Taken,
I believe Lougle provided clear figures which demonstrated that there is only a 1.8% - 2.5% enhancement for police when you compare like for like figures against nursing. Her post was of 23.01 last night, so you may have missed it as your last post was at 22.45 last night.

In addition I have provided statistics in relation to the significantly lowered life expectancy of police officers compared to others.

The personal (and chilling) accounts that many individual posters have shared on this thread illustrates the dangers faced by police officers.
