....and from the age of 50.

Other public sectar workers get nothing remotely resembling that.

Actually, now I'm getting a bit fed up. Littered throughout this thread is 'do it if you want to' or 'anyone could do it'...

It's just not true. Are we forgetting that not only do the Police Officers face the things outlined in brief but awful detail by current serving officers upthread, but they also have to be fit?

I don't mean 'fit', as in 'I go to the gym once a week and listen to nice music while I do a few stairs'. I mean seriously fit.

They have to pass beep tests, strength tests, stamina and endurance, the list goes on.

When I was younger, I did my work experience with the Police. I was 14/15. I had a great time. I had thought that I would be a Police Officer.

Then I read the entry requirements. There is no way I could meet the fitness standards. I'm tall (5'8") but relatively thin (8st 10lbs). There is no way I could beat off an assailant (if we playfight, DH can pin me down with one hand by the wrists), or give chase. I haven't got the strength or the stamina required.

Let's not pretend that 'anybody' could be a Police Officer.

ThatVikRinA22 · 25/03/2012 23:49

too right plomino....i too am on AL and RD so i shall do the same and mirror your sentiments exactly, stay safe all you public sector peeps, gnite.

whencanigohome · 25/03/2012 23:50

Badger it was you who drew the comparison. I merely questioned it.

badgeroncaffeine · 25/03/2012 23:51

Codandchops People are injured in all sorts of jobs, so forget that argument. And I'm certainly not the OP. I think that suggestion means I won't be replying to you again.

Codandchops · 25/03/2012 23:54

It is not a job I'd want to do ever given what I see on Police Interceptors or any of the others. If I deal with drunks as a nurse they are on the whole grateful to see me (although not always). The sane cannot be said for the police.

Codandchops · 25/03/2012 23:55

Okay badger, bye bye then, enjoy your wine. Wine or whatever it is making you so grumpy and touchy.

ThatVikRinA22 · 25/03/2012 23:58

something tells me that when badger joined the discussion on page 12 that they hadnt bothered to read any of the previous 12 or so pages....

but some people just want a fight dont they. this really is like being at work Grin

anyhoo, as im not being paid for this particular fuckwittery i will bid you all nighty night and foxtrot oscar.

EightiesChick · 26/03/2012 00:01

£15K salary to be a police officer, with all the implied responsibility - moral and psychological, plus the mental stress and physical demands? So the same kind of wage as many desk jobs that contribute nothing to the greater good of society? I could not disagree more.

I said this earlier but we should all be refusing to participate in this 'race to the bottom' where we knock down one another's reasons for deserving decent salaries and pensions. And if I'm going to complain about anybody's mention, it will be the likes of Fred the Shred who is at the top of my list.

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 00:01

Sorry you lost the argument. I could read the whole lot twice and I would feel the same. The pay/pensions issue will soon be addressed by the government anyway. Nighty night.

EightiesChick · 26/03/2012 00:02

Sorry pension not mention Smile

Codandchops · 26/03/2012 00:02

Night Vicar, I am off this thread and off to bed.

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 00:03

EightiesChick, read again: 15-20k.

Why not advertise the jobs at that rate. If you are correct, no-one will apply will they? Grin

whencanigohome · 26/03/2012 00:07

Badger - nothing you have written has added any value to this discussion.

EightiesChick · 26/03/2012 00:08

badger read it first time, thanks. The presumption that you could start anyone in that job at 15 (which is what 15-20 means, no?) was the most noteworthy part of a thoroughly barmy proposal.

Hell, why not advertise all jobs available anywhere as minimum wage and see what well qualified and suitable applicants come forward, eh? That'll clear the deficit in no time.

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 00:09

whencanigohome Because I disagreed with you? And worse still, the points in my original post, after the first sentence, were all fact and not option. Sorry you couldn't handle it...

EightiesChick · 26/03/2012 00:10

I know, let's advertise jobs for brain surgeons at £15K. People will apply! What could possibly go wrong? It'll bring down overinflated salaries, which is all that matters, right?

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 00:11

opinion*

And yes, eightieschick, even if you advertised and paid at 15k a year, some of the applicants from the mass ranks of the unemployed would be perfectly adequate in that job. Sorry...

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/03/2012 00:11

i suspect an agenda here as Badger has not posted on any other threads on MN (under this name at least)

i am always happy to engage in intelligent debate, but this isnt intelligent debate, its someone who has registered or name changed primarily to cause trouble and talk shite. so i wouldnt bother to even try folks, really.

right, really must go to bed now, up with dd for school. gnite again!

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 00:12

Erm, no EightiesChick, because there wouldn't be applicants qualified to do it....blimey!

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 00:14

Vicar You said long ago that you were ignoring me (you didn't). Then you told me you were going to bed (you were lying) and told me to "foxtrot oscar"...very poor form. Now, you've been looking into my posting...typical "police state" behaviour...
I think you would struggle with "intelligent debate", you couldn't count to 6 after all...

whencanigohome · 26/03/2012 00:16

Badger - please provide the source for your facts. You say you live outside of the UK, did the police officer you know work in a British police force? Why has he given you detailed information about his pension?

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/03/2012 00:18

oops! silly me! i just realised i meant to say i will foxtrot oscar. dizzy mare...which i will now of course....

When and eighties - i pm'd you.

EightiesChick · 26/03/2012 00:19

OK, Badger, so think through the implication of that for other jobs where you want quality applicants who are up to the job. Take your time, now. The cogs need to turn.

Thanks for your unsupported, subjective and therefore (in your own terms) worthless opinion on whether the applicants for police jobs would be adequate, btw. Hugely convincing! Wink

It's been a joy. Night night all! Smile

citytovillage · 26/03/2012 00:21

Some public sector pension schemes take in more than they pay out, including the NHS one. Now they are putting NHS services out to tender, making redundancies and increasing our contributions by over 3% over the next three years, on average. Where have the perks gone? Pension will reduce four fold if the government get their way; changing the measure of inflation used, paying in higher contributions, working more years, ad getting back less with career averages, rather than final salary. The people should unite to improve the state of private pension schemes, not attack public sector workers when the terms and conditions of their employment are being changed by a government nobody asked or voted for.

If people in the private sector think it's so great, come and join us.
The real thing though is that the nation are being divided into public vs. private sector.

badgeroncaffeine · 26/03/2012 00:22

Yeah yeah...I'm sure you meant that.

whencanigohome Where did I say I live outside the UK?
Yes, the policeman did work for a British force. He didn't give "detailed information", just basic information. But "detailed information" is readily found on the internet, it is no secret....
