Not to make my children change out of school uniform after school

I've never made them and they've never bothered, and it seems to be the same with many of their friends too. With 5 kids it saves on washing too.

The 3 youngest girls will happily play in the garden or go on playdates after school; the only time it's been an issue is at softplay where they have to take ties off for H&S reasons.

The elder 2 girls will go out with friends after school or if home, will either do homework or slob around and don't seem bothered, often won't even take shoes or blazers off.

Odd, or the norm?

My DD sometimes chooses to get changed after school. This week she chose shorts, vest T-shirt and flipflops. TBH I preferred the uniform.

Mumsyblouse · 22/03/2012 12:58

I didn't even know you 'should' change until this thread.

I see lots of children in their school uniforms out in the later afternoon/evening.

NoraHelmer · 22/03/2012 13:00

I always get DD to change out of her school uniform when she gets home. She's only got two school jumpers (they have to be ones bought from the school and not supermarket ones) and were quite expensive. They take ages to dry and can't be thrown in the drier so I prefer to wash them at weekends. She's usually pretty clean when she gets in from school.

She always has a clean polo shirt every day. Trousers are only worn once, but skirts/pinafores we can usually make last a few times.

pumpkinsweetie · 22/03/2012 13:25

Mine put their pjs straight on when they get if we r not going anywhere but if were off out shopping etc i leave them in their uniforms until bedtime when they put pjs on. I get 2 days use out pinafores and sumtimes jumpers (whether still clean & not worn to play etc) but a fresh shirt everyday. It doesnt make me or anyone a bad parent by leaving uniforms on just saves time & washing.

bubby64 · 22/03/2012 14:15

I make mine change out of school jumper and trousers, especially as they go off to play football as soon as they get in., I don't worry about the polo shirt. I do try and make the trousers and jumpers last 2-3 days, just change polo and underwear every day. Shoes are not a problem, as they have had it drummed into them since small to remove their shoes in the house, and they would rather put trainers on anyway...

There is no chance on my son coming out of school in a uniform that is fit for wear the next day so he just keeps it on until bedtime unless it's beavers/karate etc.

He plays out in it. No point in dirtying 2 sets. We have a uniform for each day, it's that cheap it would be daft not to. Our school don't dictate that the kids have to wear badged items, although he does have some.

I suppose if we were forking out the £20 for each badged item I'd maybe think twice but when it's a fiver from George I'm not going to sweat about it.

I have no use for false modesty either LeQ Grin

Why do some of your children come out of school with their lunch down their jumpers?

Have they not been taught how to eat properly?

My son [year5 ] has never some out of school with his lunch down his jumper.

valiumredhead · 22/03/2012 17:38

Oh good for your son! Hmm

iamme43 · 22/03/2012 17:41

Sarcastic I like it.

But honestly if they eat at the table with a knife and fork by 5 years old they should not be getting messy.

valiumredhead · 22/03/2012 17:44

If you say so.

stealthsquiggle · 22/03/2012 17:52

smug, much iamme Hmm?

My DC eat, family style, at a table, every lunchtime. They know perfectly well how to eat with a knife and fork and always eat at a table at home, but they still come home with lunch down them sometimes - (well, not DS, who is now Y5, but he certainly did up to ~Y2/3, and YR DD still does)

Faulty DC, clearly - I shall return them and demand my money back.

iamme43 · 22/03/2012 17:53

Not smug ......... just surprised.

notanothermumonamoan · 22/03/2012 17:58

My children come home wearing various foods, ink and unidentifiable things and have a bath every night after dinner so I never ask them to change when they get home (especially as my washing machine is working overtime as it is!)

NellyTheElephant · 22/03/2012 18:04

Seems to me it comes down to cost of uniform and what they are doing. My DDs' pinafore dresses are really expensive and I only have one for each of them. As they get home every afternoon and rush outside to climb trees / ride their bikes etc I never let them keep their dresses on, their dresses are rarely dirty from school and the one dress usually lasts for the 3 days they need it (tracksuits other two days) without washing and I don't want the dresses ripped while out in garden. If DDs are feeling particularly lazy and can't be bothered to change they will sometimes just take off dresses and go outside in tights and school shirt / sweatshirt as there is no-one around to see and they have those on clean every day (not expensive and I have lots) so doesn't matter if get dirty. If it's raining and they don't go outside they will usually keep uniform on.

nalubeadsgirl · 22/03/2012 18:05

Personally, I'd ensure they get changed into own clothes. If your child is misbehaving/being a pain in the arse in their school uniform, it CAN get them into trouble at school.

Oh. And if you are letting them wear them all night, all good so long as you're not sending them in the next day in dirty uniform! You wouldn't believe how many of my kids come to school wearing jumpers covered in last night's tea.

Both good reasons to get them changed ;)

nalubeadsgirl · 22/03/2012 18:14

*not that I'm saying your child is being a pain in the arse btw! Just, like any kind of uniform, why draw attention to where your child goes! Could also make them a target for paedos....they like the look of your child...now they know which school he/she goes to also....

Own clothes much more appropriate once home! Just imo. :)

gingerfrizz · 22/03/2012 19:25

FFS - am I about to have SS round because I'm neglecting my children by not making them change out of a certain set of clothes?!

Just proves the fact that most of the stuff on MN is a bit silly.

ariadne1 · 22/03/2012 19:53

'But honestly if they eat at the table with a knife and fork by 5 years old they should not be getting messy.'

really? I sometimes spill and I'm even older than 5!

lovelyladuree · 22/03/2012 20:30

I get so fed up seeing my kids in uniform. But they rarely change after school. Funny enough, I make them change if they go out to play because trousers will get destroyed climbing trees, etc.

PfftTheMagicDraco · 22/03/2012 20:33

If they change a full set of uniform every day, you dont need 5 sets unless you only wash once a week!

DS has 5 shirts and trousers but only 3 jumpers. However, I wash every day, or every other day, so dont need 5 sets
