Not to make my children change out of school uniform after school

gingerfrizz · 21/03/2012 18:38

I've never made them and they've never bothered, and it seems to be the same with many of their friends too. With 5 kids it saves on washing too.

The 3 youngest girls will happily play in the garden or go on playdates after school; the only time it's been an issue is at softplay where they have to take ties off for H&S reasons.

The elder 2 girls will go out with friends after school or if home, will either do homework or slob around and don't seem bothered, often won't even take shoes or blazers off.

Odd, or the norm?

i have always made my sons change, otherwise there would be holes galore in everything!

FishfingersAreOK · 21/03/2012 21:28

I sometimes get DD to change but this is if she has come home from school a bit "I am 5 going on 16" in the attitude department Smile. Tend to find the 5 minutes or so in her room changing brings my lovely wee girl back- the teenager gets dumped on the floor hung up with the uniform.

Sometimes she wants to change into a floaty dress to "dance" in.

She is pretty clean food wise and I am wising up to the fact often a wipe with a cloth will get rid of some smaller marks on cardigan/pinafore (why wash if not needed). Clean whites (vest/pants/socks/shirts) each day but we can make a pinafore/skirt/cardy last all week yep, skanky, sorry

So there I am...sitting on the fence. Will be a different answer when DS starts school in Sept..

AnnoyingOrange · 21/03/2012 21:30

Mine get changed if they want to. I don't mind what they do

verytellytubby · 21/03/2012 21:35

Mine don't change. I do enough washing all week without adding to it.

JustOneMoreQuestion · 21/03/2012 21:36

We always changed out of uniform as kids, but that was because it was just so expensive. Now with tesco and Asda and Sains doing £2.50 pairs of trousers, it's better my boy wrecks those than his £15 pair of jeans, so I let him stay in his uniform unless he wants to change.

cornsilksit1 · 21/03/2012 21:40

i just bung it in the washing machine every night

stepmad · 21/03/2012 21:43

Mine have enough uniform to have clean on every day lucky in that we get given loads still at the age when their lunch paint mud gets on it

Lucy88 · 21/03/2012 22:26

Agree with JustOneMoreQuestion.

When I was a child, school uniform was expensive and I remember having 3 skirts, 3 tops and 2 cardigans and always had to get changed when I got home from school.

Now you can buy what I call 'Throw away clothes'. Stuff from Tesco and Asda that are really cheap. My DS has a clean pair of trousers, polo shirt and jumper for each day and I wash them all on a Friday and iron them on a Sunday. He plays out in them because they are cheaper to replace than his normal clothes. If he goes down onto the local playing field to play football, he has to change his shoes (Clarkes are expensive).

lazylula · 21/03/2012 22:58

Ds1 certainly doesn't smell Hmm I usually aim to get 2 days out of his uniform (even his shirts if I can). I have 6 shirts so not a problem if not, but I have 3 trousers and 3 jumpers, he has 2 ties but one is just for emergencies as it is elasticated one and looks dreadful on! He definitely seems to keep things cleaner at school than at home as I rarely get 2 days out of home clothes when he wears them all day.

pigletmania · 21/03/2012 23:00

My dd is in foundation, if she comes home with dirty uniform I don't bother, but if er uni is clean ad twisty than yes I do.

pigletmania · 21/03/2012 23:00

Meant tidy dame predictive text

Heswall · 21/03/2012 23:07

I have 5 sets of uniform for three children. Ideally the whole uniform doesn't need changing very day but I don't want to be caught short. I have 2 PE kits too, I leave the tags on until the day something g is lost and if we make it through the year without loosing a certain item it gets swapped for the next size up.

Heswall · 21/03/2012 23:07

5 sets each I meant not between them that would t work.

northcountrygirl · 21/03/2012 23:20

Mine stay in their uniform too after school - unless we're going somewhere.

They also have a fresh uniform each day. Whilst my children don't smell the clothes do - they have that "school smell" about them.

And yes, they do have 5 of everything (except ties - they do wear the ties for more than one day).

Pandemoniaa · 21/03/2012 23:30

I can't see a problem with 5 of everything so far as shirts, trousers and underthings are concerned but do those of you who send your children to school in a completely fresh uniform every day actually have 5 blazers?

In my experience, and bearing in mind my dcs were rather hard on clothes (as well as living in a nice muddy rural area) at primary age they tended to change into clothes that were more suitable for their lifestyle. Old jeans and sweatshirts/t-shirts stood up to tree climbing, grass sledging and the various other larks that they were fond of after school. It'd have pained me to see school trousers and jumpers getting the same treatment!

By secondary school, and cool urban dwellers too, they rarely changed out of uniform though.

Firawla · 21/03/2012 23:37

my ds is in school nursery only for afternoons but i still just keep him in uniform most days from morning til bedtime, as it takes nagging every time to get him to get changed so its easier this way. obviously clean clothes on every day, so its fine although i admit maybe a bit lazy to let him do this but double washing would be a pain as i would still have to wash all the item worn even if only for a couple of hours each. you dont have to have 5 of everything to put them in clean each day just wash midweek?

upahill · 21/03/2012 23:39

I have been nagging mine to get changed out of uniform since nursery!!
For most of the way it has worked but things have slipped once they got to secondary.

I usually come home from work to find them still in uniform unless they have gone out. (Then I find DS2's uniform screwed up looking like a load of rags to be chucked out.

At this point I can no longer be bothered to nag!!! DS1 leaves school shortly anyway.

My dc don't get changed out of uniform either and have clean everything every day except jumpers and ds1 only has 1 tie.

Uniform is cheaper than their ordinary clothes and ds2 especially, often comes home with dirty trousers and he is a sweaty creature too Grin

D0oinMeCleanin · 22/03/2012 00:00

DD1 gets changed when she gets home but she is odd and changes several times a day. She comes home and prances about in her new dress and shoes for a while and then gets changed into jeans etc. to play out in. Then she will get changed into 'old clothes' for her dinner. Of course I don't wash her putifts after every wear as she only has each outfit on for a couple of hours tops.

Dd2 is even odder, she also changes into a party dress when she gets home but will then put her uniform back on Confused. She has clean uniform for everyday but the party dress only gets washed in prepartion for parties.

iamme43 · 22/03/2012 07:33

To whoever it was that asked I work in a large department store.

Why would you say 'fish shop or with rhinos''

I am confused lol

Threeprinces · 22/03/2012 08:11

Mine stay in school uniform, as others have said it's cheaper than their nice clothes so I'd rather they trashed that than expensive clothes. I can't see why it's lazy, they bath or shower in the morning or at bedtime.

Both have over 5 sets if trousers, tops etc only a few jumpers each though.

Currently sorting out the second mortgage for the initial buy of secondary school stuff though where everything is logo'd, no more cheap Tesco polo shirts for us :-(

startail · 22/03/2012 09:13

Uniform stays on if it needs washing and comes off if it doesn't.

Both schools have reasonably pricy logoed
Jumpers that's embroidery and general appearance last best if they aren't washed to often.

They also take a while to dry.

startail · 22/03/2012 09:17

Also DD1 wears £25 M&S ladies trousers, so I'd much rather she goes trampolining in her leggings.

Bramshott · 22/03/2012 09:33

I've given up fighting this battle. I would prefer them to change, and I used to insist when DD1 was younger, but now they only do if they want to. It's their choice I guess.
