Not to make my children change out of school uniform after school

I've never made them and they've never bothered, and it seems to be the same with many of their friends too. With 5 kids it saves on washing too.

The 3 youngest girls will happily play in the garden or go on playdates after school; the only time it's been an issue is at softplay where they have to take ties off for H&S reasons.

The elder 2 girls will go out with friends after school or if home, will either do homework or slob around and don't seem bothered, often won't even take shoes or blazers off.

Odd, or the norm?

Mine stay in their school stuff to have their tea and then change into kit for clubs three nights a week. Shower and jarmies on the other nights. Clean uniform when they come home from school looking grubby, clean undies tights, socks every day though. Roll on Summer term and uniform dresses!

bettybat · 21/03/2012 19:16

Awww and I suddenly had a reminisce about the cute grey pinafore dresses we had as part of our Infants/Junior school uniform, with cute little pleats at the bottom Grin Do they still have uniforms like that for Infants, or is it just polo shirts and skirts?

stealthsquiggle · 21/03/2012 19:16

Mine have at least 3 of most things, although their uniform thankfully does not involve ties or blazers. The exception is DD's kilt, of which we have 2, which gets inspected before washing as I hate ironing the bloody things. I do at least one uniform wash overnight during the week - but I will do general washing loads moat evenings anyway so don't see the issue with that.

insanityscratching · 21/03/2012 19:16

Dd leaves hers on but she has a clean uniform each morning anyway as she has generally spilt her lunch on it anyway.

Betty she has five plus shirts, skirts, pinafores, three sweaters and two cardigans anyway but I wash two or three loads a day (family of seven so lots of laundry)

shesparkles · 21/03/2012 19:20

Mine always change when they get in....clean school shirt every day, jumper washed at the weekend, or a quick rinse through midweek if it needs it and it's dry in the morning.
Play clothes usually last a couple of days, so I don't see that it adds to washing.
Where to people get the money for 5 whole sets of school uniform?

Mumsyblouse · 21/03/2012 19:22

I leave them in their uniform, I have tonnes of uniform tops/sweatshirts and skirts, I'd rather get the use out of them, especially as my little one is a grubby thing and has a completely fresh uniform most days.

Their weekend clothes are actually more expensive and nicer than their uniforms, why bother changing them out of cheap and cheerful uniforms into better casual clothing?!

BarbarianMum · 21/03/2012 19:22

Ditto south345

Mine have a clean uniform x5 - it is never clean by the end of school (I guess this may change as they get older). Beside which the uniform is pretty cheap, certainly it is cheaper than their weekend clothes (perhaps because I buy in bulk Smile).

bettybat I can only assume you don't have small boys and if you do, what on earth do they do at break time? By the time mine have wrestled on the field, or played football, they need fresh clothes. I guess I could make o with less if I washed every day but then it would just get tattier more quickly.

iamme43 - do you work in a fish shop, or with rhinos or something?

Mumsyblouse · 21/03/2012 19:24

I find school uniform really cheap, but that's because we don't get the logoed tops and I buy M & S trousers/skirts as they last for years and gets passed down (not like Sainsbury's horrid bobbly stuff which only lasts a yearand is fit for the bin). If I had to pay out for stuff with logos on, I would probably have less and make them change.

shesparkles · 21/03/2012 19:27

I buy M&S trousers and shirts, but the school jumpers are £20 a whack hence only buying 1 at a time!

AWimbaWay · 21/03/2012 19:30

No, they wear their uniform unless going to rainbows, gymnastics etc. that requires a change. I only wash it if it looks or smells dirty.

stealthsquiggle · 21/03/2012 19:31

Uniform (bought secondhand, sold on when they grow out of it) costs me about £1 per item to own (which goes to school uniform shop). The only limit on how much they have is availability.

bettybat · 21/03/2012 19:31

Hahaha BarbarianMum I have neither, but pregnant with my first! I was trying to remember my own school days/uniform, and only then really thinking of secondary school.

This thread is one of those eye-openers where I can't remember myself as a young child, and you suddenly get a glimpse of all the things you don't know Wink

motherinferior · 21/03/2012 19:31

Mine don't wear uniform. When DD1 goes to a uniform-wearing secondary school I expect she'll change out of the revolting thing ASAP. Loathe uniforms.

ravenAK · 21/03/2012 20:00

Mine change (usually into pyjamas in winter months, jeans & a t-shirt in the summer) on Mondays & Wednesdays, so as to keep jumpers & trousers/pinafore/skirt clean for next day - I try to get two days out of them as it's greener & doesn't wear them out so quickly.

They'd definitely change to play round at a friend's or go out to an activity; uniform only gets kept on until bedtime if it's going in the wash.

Clean shirt, underwear & socks every day.

Geranium3 · 21/03/2012 20:22

not odd at all but mine would have totally clean uniform each and every day so no worries if they got dirty after school!

curiositykitten · 21/03/2012 20:24

Depends if the uniform is dirty or not. If it's dirty, she can keep it on. If it's clean, it gets hung up for the next day. Playing out always involves changing first though.

Elabella1401 · 21/03/2012 20:45

I don't understand the bath every day thing either. That is a relatively new phenomena and is not necessary for most kids. Pre-pubescent children barely sweat so as long as they haven't got dirty whilst playing then a wash every morning and evening and a bath/shower 2/3 times a week is enough. Water is a precious commodity these days and shouldn't be squandered with unnecessary washing - be it people or clothes.

girliefriend · 21/03/2012 20:52

yanbu at all, I don't make my dd change out of her uniform, don't see the point Confused

Clawdy · 21/03/2012 21:02

Mine always changed, some how it seemed more comfortable to be playing or watching tv in other clothes...putting school behind them for the day. If we are out at work all day, don't we feel like getting into some thing else when we get in?

blemp · 21/03/2012 21:02

No, they stay in their uniforms. They are warm and comfy, why on earth would I generate more washing. My electricity bill is quite high enough!! I prob wash the uniform twice a week, maybe the jumper 3 times if it gets food dropped on it. My kids are not the type to get covered in mud etc, and they certainly don't smell in any way, they are primary school kids! I don't get the new polo shirt every day thing.

They obviously get new pants and socks every day.

I do give them a bath most nights though, it's a nice part of our routine and they enjoy having a bath together.

DonInKillerHeels · 21/03/2012 21:05

We never changed out of our uniforms until it was time to get into PJs

aquashiv · 21/03/2012 21:05

they stay in their uniform yes but chage it everyday.

shebird · 21/03/2012 21:12

They change everyday after school mainly to save getting spag Bol or whatever else on their uniform but also just to chill out and be more comfy in leggings or joggers. I always change after work it just helps me feel more relaxed so I guess I think the same of school uniform.

shebird · 21/03/2012 21:13

On the darkest coldest days sometimes my DCs put their pjs on when we get inBlush so do I

RunningLatte · 21/03/2012 21:19

I let mine decide whether they want to change or not.

Like lots of others they're usually filthy when they get home anyway.
