On the front page of tomorrow's Mirror is this quote from Dennis Waterman "Yes I hit Rula, but clever women make men lash out"

Speechless. I hope nobody ever hires him again. (Not that lots of people are at the moment, but you know what I mean).

Meow75isknittinglikemad · 19/03/2012 23:10

CLEVER WOMEN!!! Jeeeeeez!!

Never particularly liked him much, but that takes the bloody biscuit!!

What a total tosser.

YouOldSlag · 19/03/2012 23:11

Well he was more famous in the Eighties than he is now, unless you count the parody of him in Little Britain "write the theme tune, sing the theme tune".

Fucking hell Shock

Grag · 19/03/2012 23:23

Sounds like he thinks he's still in the Sweeney.

jinsei · 19/03/2012 23:26

I hope that he's been misquoted! Shock FFS!

Figarello · 19/03/2012 23:29

Jesus! [shock

Seriously hope that he has been misquoted as if those exact words came out of his mouth in any context it would be unforgivable.

Sunnywithachanceofshowers · 19/03/2012 23:29

YANBU. Absolutely foul.

lepetitchoufleur · 19/03/2012 23:43

Horrendous! YANBU! What a total.... Words fail me. There's no mitigating circumstance that renders that sentence acceptable.

FreudianSlipper · 19/03/2012 23:52

if that is what he really said it is disgusting

but does highlight how abusive men think they are always pushed into doing it and that is something that needs to be highlighted - it is always a choice of the abuser to abuse

Link if anyone's interested. Had to look it up to see if it was as OP stated, if anything it's worse.

AbigailAdams · 20/03/2012 01:05

I thought this was common knowledge as Rula Lenska had already said something about it when they split except of course we all know women lie about DV from our F4j friends

AbigailAdams · 20/03/2012 01:05

Oh and YANBU.

carernotasaint · 20/03/2012 02:01

This is disgusting. More woman blaming. I remember in Lynda Bellinghams autobiography she mentioned an incident that happened with him one night at a wrap party after filming The Sweeney.
I saw it when it was serialized on a newspaper website. Apparently he sent her flowers the next morning to apologize.

Hes a jealous bitter twisted old man whose career may be on the wane and im guessing he doesnt like it that nicer people and more talented actors like John Simm and Philip Glenister are getting the parts he used to get.

carernotasaint · 20/03/2012 02:11

Ive posted it above. It includes the abuse she suffered in her marriage but mentions Dennis further down the page.

She says he either sees women as mates or slags and used to have a go at her when he had "had a few"

And then sent her flowers one time to apologise.
Im fucking gobsmacked by what hes said in the Mirror as well as disgusted.

CleopatrasAsp · 20/03/2012 02:38

The worrying thing is that his career isn't on the wane though is it? New Tricks is a very successful series and I am guessing he is pretty well paid for it, particularly as it is often repeated. Makes me so mad that someone like this is on our screens on a regular basis, he is a loathesome man - and I've always thought he was a pretty crap actor as well.

On a lighter note, it made me laugh a lot when he got those horrendous teeth that made him look like a horse a few years ago.

sunshineandbooks · 20/03/2012 06:00

It's alright,
It's ok,
To beat up your wife as long as it's not every day,
It's alright,
I say it's ok,
Listen to what I say (or I'll smack you one).

Hmm
AbigailAdams · 20/03/2012 07:06

Wife beaters careers rarely suffer. Look at Sean Connery and Bing Crosby for example.

any justification of domestic violence is disgusting. but having been in an abusive relationship before it is quite common "i hit you but you did X". It took me years to get out, as i was firstly to brainwashed and confused to understand what was going on (the abuse was always more mental and emotional and then turned to physical), by the time the hitting started i was to afraid to leave. When i was eventually out and opened up to friends, the response was less than great. There was a lot of "it isn't our business", "X wouldn't do that, he's a legend",.... The majority went to his wedding and i found that quite hard to swallow. I mean i know that at the beginning it was my word against his, but a few months after we spilt up, he had his new girlfriend up against the wall of our local by the throat, and had to be dragged off her. still the consensus among our friends was "she pushed him to it". so sadly i don't think that arsehole waterman's views are that out of touch or uncommon.

HillyWallaby · 20/03/2012 08:09

Good god. Hmm

Is he actually using that as a justification, like 'she used her intellect to belittle me and it pushed me too far' or is it a sensationalist headline possibly taken out of context? Because actually, we know that what he is saying is true, even if it is worded poorly. Women who refuse to be submissive, and insist on answering back in an articulate way that confuses and frustrates the knuckle draggers are quite likely to get a slap for being too big for their boots.

He may be being contrite and saying that's what he thought was his excuse, back then. Would have to read the full thing to be sure.

BalloonSlayer · 20/03/2012 08:11

I used to like him when Minder was on.

Then I watched him and Rula Lenska when they appeared on "Wogan" once in the 1980s.

For the duration of this particular show there were puzzles left on the table, like those two parts you can't get to come apart easily, that sort of thing (as a kind of talking point I guess.)

While Waterman was talking to Wogan, Rula Lenska picked one up, and started to examine it. He stopped what he was saying and said "Do you MIND. I am talking," as though she was being rude, and I guess if you were fussy/sensitive you could say that was a bit rude, but you'd never call someone on it in public, would you, and certainly not on live TV?

She apologised humbly and put it down.

A couple of minutes later she was answering a question. Waterman picked up the puzzle. She did not pull him up in the same way, just carried on talking to Wogan. A minute later, while she was still talking, he loudly shouted out "DONE IT!!" brandishing the solved puzzle in triumph, totally interrupting - and ruining - what she was saying.

I was only in my 20s and knew nothing about abusive, controlling, nasty men. But I have detested him ever since.

Gigondas · 20/03/2012 08:13

Sad bloody depressing . Heard this on news and think Kathy Lette was on commenting on how unacceptable it is. The worst thing is it probably wont affect his career as others have said- Chris brown anyone?

sunshineandbooks · 20/03/2012 08:13

qazxc I'm sorry you went through that. And I think you're right - this behaviour is still tolerated by many. The fact that Dennis Waterman talks about it as freely as he has shows he doesn't think it's that big a deal, not really.

With 1 in 4 women abused, 1 in 9 raped, 2 women a week killed by their partners or ex-partners, and the likes of Sean Connery and Chris Rock clearly showing no ill effects from the public knowledge of their behaviour, our society has a long way to go before we can say we don't tolerate abusive behaviour. Which is why I wish we would stop blaming women for 'putting up with it'.
