Seems like with all these cuts the govt are deliberately trying to keep the working class down?

YANBU. You are right and I am disgusted.

lisad123 · 17/03/2012 20:02

I know Sad
Just show they are willing to do whatever as long as it doesn't effect them and their rich friendsAngry

WibblyBibble · 17/03/2012 20:05

Don't think it's even just 'the poor' now, it's pretty much everyone who isn't a millionnaire seeing as they are being shitty to public sector workers too. But YANBU of course.

chandellina · 17/03/2012 20:09

Yabu. If you believe the government is trying to screw over the poor wouldn't the result be to stoke discontent? The reality is we are all screwed in a weak economy and with an overindebted Treasury.

TeaTeaLotsOfTea · 17/03/2012 20:10

I don't know why you're so shocked.

It is a tory government after all

scarborough84 · 17/03/2012 20:11

Its not just the poor. People who are just in HRT band have been hit too.

picnicbasketcase · 17/03/2012 20:11

YANBU but agree with WibbleBibble - everyone is being or will eventually be royally screwed by the time this bunch of cockheads are finished. I hope anyone who voted for them is thoroughly ashamed.

Alltheseboys · 17/03/2012 20:14

But they don't seem to be punishing the rich chandellina? All the cuts seem to be effecting those that need it the most. We have lost our tax credits & we are not entitled to any benefits. I work hard as a public sector worker & just seem to be getting punished for trying to better myself & my family.Angry

the cabnet is made up of the Eaton Mafia don't you know

MySunshineInGreySkies · 17/03/2012 20:17

I agree but the problem is the rich make more money for the economy and contribute more towards growth than the poor in general terms... It's an unequal law of life and economics...

chandellina · 17/03/2012 20:18

I think there are definitely some punishments for the rich going down but I also think it is a huge political misstep to get rid of the 50 p tax rate at this time.

MySunshineInGreySkies · 17/03/2012 20:19

My point being, they can't disincentivise the rich too much as they will just move. They have to cut somewhere and they view the immediate impact of cutting services for those who need them as less economically damaging. It's all short term thinking... I don't agree with it but it is a difficult quandary.

redlac · 17/03/2012 20:20

What Tea said.

SaffronDormouse · 17/03/2012 20:22

Yes,Tea summed it up.

EdithWeston · 17/03/2012 20:25

The Spectator pointed out that the top earning 1% of the population receives Bout 13% of income, but pays 28% of tax revenue. I'm not sure how healthy it is to be so reliant on such a small section of the population.

KalSkirata · 17/03/2012 20:26

well d'uh. If you have high unemployment and poor benefits then you have working people by the short n curlies. Too afraid to unionise, protest over working conditions or ask for decent pay.
And probably for the first time the wealthier classes (them on 40K plus) are feeling it too

ariadne1 · 17/03/2012 20:29

That's kinda what tories are all about

chandellina · 17/03/2012 20:29

The fundamental problem IMO is we can't afford the welfare state in its current form and with an ageing population. We also need to encourage job creation and a bloated and costly public sector hampers that. I don't envy any government of any stripe having to deal with these problems.

Grag · 17/03/2012 20:32

I think they are mainly just trying to spend a bit less and cut the deficit. I don't see what else they could do. Labour were at fault for trying to spend money to cover up problems instead of addressing the route causes.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 17/03/2012 20:33

YABU... The previous government kept the poor down. Paid Tax Credits rather than getting wages up. Allowed 1.5m to stay unemployed in the biggest economic boom for 20 years and overspent every penny of tax generated until there was famously 'no money left'. Blame the people who shat on us from a great height... not the ones clearing up the mess.

KalSkirata · 17/03/2012 20:34

'bloated and costly public secor' - that will be all those doctors, nurses, teachers, fire brigade, police etc then.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/03/2012 20:47

cutting wages is a brilliant way of encouraging people to get in to debt of up to £27,000.

thekidsrule · 17/03/2012 21:11

god all this makes very depressing reading, but what is classed as poor now in this climate

i think 0f poor as minimum wage or not much above really living hand to mouth,no savings, increasing debts not spent on luxuries but just staying afloat

i do wander what the next couple of years are gonna be like in general, and do you think the tories think they will get re-elected?? i dont but then what

really feel for those struggling at the moment

gallifrey · 17/03/2012 21:27

What annoys me is that when you have worked hard for 20 years and finally worked your way up to having a decent job on a decent wage you get penalised for that, taxed at 40%, get no help at all from the government don't get any tax credits and now they are taking away child benefit too.
It sounds like my husband earns a lot of money but his take home is not what you would call loads of money at all. By the time we have paid all our outgoings we are overdrawn :(

gallifrey · 17/03/2012 21:30

and also, when I get a job even on minimum wage I can't claim any tax credits for my child care!
