to wonder how people can justify smoking during pregnancy?

I know this is an emotive thread, and I'm not talking about people who try and cut down slowly I'm talking about people who make no effort to stop.

How do people justify that?

Where I live I see alot of it and suprisingly its not mainly 'chavyy women' as people would think.

AIBU to wonder why someone wouldnt even try to stop?

I don't think any different, it's none of my business what other people do when their pregnant.

People should spend more time thinking about their own children and parenting choices, rather than frothing about what other people do.

But like I've said, it makes some people feel better about themselves if they have someone else to judge.

To clarify, the first paragraph of the above was to Ilikecandy and the second to Everlast.

AhsataN · 19/03/2012 08:56

its been 3 years yesterday that i gave up smoking, i found out i was pregnant and stopped cold turkey i used to smoke 20 a day. it was really hard but i did it because all i thought about was my baby.
i did put on 2 and a half stone over the pregnancy, the last stone went on in the last month as i had such bad hips i couldn't move for screaming in agony. i have lost nearly a stone of that weight but am finding it very hard.
it pisses me off when people don't even try to give up smoking, i don't think its very fair to do something that could damage your unborn baby.
when i became pregnant that was my decision and my responsibility to make sure i did everything i possibly could to give my baby the best start.

LtEveDallas · 19/03/2012 09:03

So how do you feel about the smokers who refuse to give up, the ones that say it'll be fine, it's my choice, I want a small baby, all my friends do it and they're baby was ok, or whatever other excuse they come up with?

I've never come across one.

If I did, I would stick to my usual stance that is "If you want help or support to give up, and I can give you any of that, please ask"

Otherwise I would keep my nose out - because it is none of my business. I would most certainly not come on MN and call them names.

Archemdes Wow this thread has spiralled , I dont think many people on here would actually go up to a pg smoker and shout the odds. So it's OK to post nasty judgemental comments about them on an internet forum, as long as you dont have the balls to say it to their faces? OK.

Everlong, no you are quite correct, you haven't. I was generalising and I apologise for that. You have however been been rather picky and PA with your answers, which led me to assume you would do.

AhsataN - I echo what everlong said, well done for putting your baby first. I too was a smoker and it was hell giving up but I did so before ttc as no way was I going to do that to my babies. I still miss it after many years of not smoking bur my children are more important and as I breastfeed that is another reason I dont smoke. Women who smoke when preg should be ashamed of themselves.

Saw a heavily pregnant woman smoking at the zoo yesterday...as she lit up her friend said fucking hell mate that's three in an hour your poor baby.

What struck me is that she had no shame! I mean I know it's hard to quit, loads of people who really want to do it though, but to do it in public when so massively pregnant was pretty hideous.
