To think a bottle of wine is a LOT to drink for 1 person?

This comes out of a discussion with a frind who I saw on Saturday morning. When we talked about what we were going to do that weekend it came up that she was planning to drink a bottle of wine to herself that evening. When I commented that this was a lot, she said she regularly drank a bottle of wine.

So AIBU in thinking this is a lot for someone to drink in 1 night?

I can easily drink a bottle of wine in a night and I'm 5ft 3. I do it every Friday and Saturday. I worked in a holiday camp for years though so I'm used to high volumes of alcohol although I have cut down dramatically.
I don't do it to get drunk. DH and I watch films or tv and it relaxes me. I never get ill either.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 12/03/2012 21:07

Spuddy Shock I'd have been dead after quarter of that!!

I can drink a bottle of red wine, but not champagne and certainly not beer - it kills me.

Wow, how were you not drunk? I have drank to that extent in the past, when I was young and able Wink

thebighouse · 12/03/2012 21:07

This is interesting isn't it? I can easily drink a bottle a night, I probably do that once or twice a week. I drink every day, probably a glass or two.

I left my husband three months ago and prior to that I was drinking about 20 units a DAY. It was one of the things that made me leave. I'm probably averaging 3 or 4 units a day now.

It looks AWFUL writing it down. I don't tend to get hungover.

I'm very short and slim, FWIW and I do a lot of exercise.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 12/03/2012 21:08

A bottle isn't a lot for me. Maybe it isn't for her.

Now two bottles I couldn't manage-but my mum couldWink

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 12/03/2012 21:10

spuddy I've just lol at that. If I had that chance I'd take it!!

Over a day and night it's not bad for a one off though

SwedishEdith · 12/03/2012 21:12

I can easily do this at the weekend. Feeling sick would surely depend on how quickly you drank it? If I'm choosing the wine, I pick 12% or less. I do finder it harder to drink a whole bottle of red rather than white so will choose that if just want half a bottle.

Some people lack the enzyme which helps them process alcohol so do genuinely feel the effects very quickly though

Butkin · 12/03/2012 21:13

We would struggle to drink a bottle of wine between us - normally we'd just have a small glass or two each and throw the rest away.

I would classify anybody drinking a bottle each per night as drinking far too much for their health. Lots of people seem to consider drinking large amounts as funny and a badge of honour - can't understand this myself.

TheMerchantOfVenom · 12/03/2012 21:16

I don't think it's a lot, either. Or else I wouldn't do it!!

That doesn't mean I don't realise it's not entirely healthy.

See the difference?

I realise it's not healthy, but I'm OK With That. Grin

topknob · 12/03/2012 21:17

merchant :D

DilysPrice · 12/03/2012 21:18

Butkin you are in serious need of a Vacuvin.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 12/03/2012 21:18

i probably have the equivalent of a bottle when i go out - that's about 4 glasses in most places now, isn't it?
over a long evening, with food, i don't consider it outrageous
i'm aware that it's more that what's recommended, but 3-4 times a year won't kill me. i don't get hungover, and i rarely drink inbetween (eg my last drink was about 3 weeks ago).

sarahtigh · 12/03/2012 21:20

a bottle of wine for one person is officially binge drinking, a bottle is at least 12 units unless well below average alcohol which is about 12%,

also many think 1 glass is about a unit but it is not; even a small pub meaure of 125ml is about 1.5 units and would put you over the drink drive limit, and most wine glasses are 250ml so just one large glass 5 times a week is easily the sensible limit for a woman

I think a bottle in a night even once a week is not healthy maybe once in a blue moon but not weekly

hmc · 12/03/2012 21:22

Not read whole thread. Yes it is a lot - just because drinking a whole bottle of wine to yourself has been 'normalised' (in that a lot of people do it), doesn't make it innocuous

curiositykitten · 12/03/2012 21:22

I drink a bottle of vodka in a night. Is that too much?

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 12/03/2012 21:24

Badge of honour? I'm not 15!

Don't be silly but - just because you don't do it doesn't mean those who do are immature and completely stupid!

I do it as I enjoy it. Simple. I'm perfectly well educated, reasonable and of sound mind. Completely able to drink a bottle without having to brag about it, get ill or sick.

It's just my choice

TheMerchantOfVenom · 12/03/2012 21:25

Newsflash, sarah - it's official, we know it's not healthy.

Honestly, we realise that. :)

But we're all big girls, grown-ups, and able to work out what's right for ourselves.

I also worked in a wine bar for a while when I first arrived in London. I'm well aware of what a). constitutes a measure and more importantly b). what is over the drink-drive limit.

A gentle reminder - we're discussing drinking at home.

This thread is heading for a new patronising low. Perhaps we should all just agree to disagree.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 12/03/2012 21:26

Luckily sarahtigh, hmc, as many have said, it's about what we as educated adults choose to do, so regardless of what others may think, as long as the person in question is aware then it's really not got much to do with what anybody else thinks.

I now feel immense pity for the smokers when it's their turn of the MN topic rota Grin

curiosity - nah, it's fine if you drink with a bottle of lemonade it cancels the vodka out innit.

Wink
TheMerchantOfVenom · 12/03/2012 21:26

Thanks hmc for your valuable insight. Now perhaps try reading the thread to learn that we all already realise that. :)

Butkin... you THROW WINE AWAY? Don't you save it for the next day, or the day after that? Shock

Yes SparkyMcSparrow that was me haha... I wouldn't normally boast about my sex life but I feel a good few glasses of wine can do wonders!

curiositykitten · 12/03/2012 21:28

"curiosity - nah, it's fine if you drink with a bottle of lemonade it cancels the vodka out innit."

Yeah, probably not so much lemonade, but I do take ice if that helps? A usually a kebab to soak up some of the alcohol?

TheMerchantOfVenom · 12/03/2012 21:28

Brian, she said she does know, but would you mind running through the basic tenets of it again, just to be sure?

Ah, kebab - you do know that they are full of fat don'tcha?

I'd find a link to the government website on healthy eating but my pizza is in the way Wink

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 12/03/2012 21:29

Who'd have thought a bottle of wine would cause such a difference of opinion?

Can I ask those who don't drink as much as a bottle of wine a week- what are your vices? Do you have any?

I'm not being finicky, serious question!
