AIBU to be upset at masseuse insulting my body?

Went for a 'lovely relaxing' massage yesterday. I was a bit self-conscious about being nearly naked in front of a stranger, but once I relaxed it was I was feeling really chilled out, until she said that I shouldn't put on any more weight as my ankles would be damaged from the strain of "carrying all that weight around."

I am size 16, so I know not exactly sylph-like, but now feel really pissed off that my relaxing hour of pampering made me feel paranoid about my body. I spent the rest of the session feeling really conscious of the fat wobbling as she pummeled it and left feeling really tearful (still am today). Should I complain to her?

I'm the same size and I would have been mortified too, I wouldn't have expected it.

OTOH as others have said I wouldn't mind comments about dry skin, although I would want them couched in a friendly or matter of fact rather than accusatory manner. The first time I had a facial (which I had avoided for years due to having acne and feeling embarassed) the lady said "ooh you have a lot of blackheads", and strangely I didn't mind that - perhaps because my skin had been so much worse in the past!

abrakebabra · 09/03/2012 13:09

Wowsers, I got given a massage voucher as a gift after I gave birth.

I was able to use it on a haircut instead so that's what I did and I'm bloody glad now!

TheEpilator · 09/03/2012 13:12

I can understand the skin thing cathkidston, which is why I wasn't so bothered by that. However, my skin looks like a snake so I would have to be living in the dark, without any sense of touch to never have noticed it! I'd have preferred her to just slather on a bit of extra oil and let me relax.

Just remembered, DH's first ever 'compliment' to me was "You've got lovely skin - its tough, like a rhino" Hmm

Not her place to be dishing out advice, she is not a health care provider.

CailinDana · 09/03/2012 13:17

The company she works for will be grateful if you complain - behaviour like that will lose them an awful lot of business.

TheEpilator · 09/03/2012 13:22

She works for herself Cailin, so probably all the more important for her not to lose clients by making inappropriate comments.

CailinDana · 09/03/2012 13:31

Gosh, yes Epilator. Is she young?

cathkidstonbag · 09/03/2012 13:34

Please just tell yourself she was incredibly unprofessional. Even when I let my friends have freebie massages from me I still never pass comment on anything whilst they are on my couch. It's unethical and she is not doing a good job at all by making you feel uncomfortable. I'm sorry you had that experience and can assure you that not all massage therapists are the same.

Cherriesarelovely · 09/03/2012 13:34

She said WHAT? That is absolutely outrageous! Please complain, what a horrible, rude person.

CailinDana · 09/03/2012 13:36

Perhaps just write her a letter saying that what she said really hurt your feelings and that in future, for the good of her business, she should think carefully before making comments about people's weight and skin condition. She should really know that already.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 09/03/2012 13:37

Definitely complain. Her comments were rude, unprofessional and fucking uncalled for.

Bonsoir · 09/03/2012 13:41

I disagree with some of the comments on this thread. Masseuses are often qualified physiotherapists and are in a position to talk about your body and the strains and stresses upon it, which of course includes excess weight.

And as for mentioning dry skin - that is completely bog standard for a masseuse!

cathkidstonbag · 09/03/2012 13:43

But a massage therapist should never pass comment on something which will make the client feel uncomfortable. Sports/remedial massage is completely different to a relaxing massage, but even then personal comments should be avoided. Yes we might have an opinion but we keep our mouths shut!!

CailinDana · 09/03/2012 13:45

Exactly cathkidstonbag. If Epilator had said "My ankles ache" or some such then the comment about weight would have been understandable but just to make the comment out of the blue is very unprofessional. Even the thickest eejit knows that weight comments can be very hurtful and to hand them out in a business situation is just stupid!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 09/03/2012 13:45

That's really bad - def complain!!

Push what a stupid thing to say - the average size of the UK woman is a size 16,hardly massive is it!

Pusheed · 09/03/2012 18:30

Size 16 is "hardly massive"???

What part of the fried Mars Bar world do you live in?

imnotmymum · 09/03/2012 18:43

I have decided pusheed you are just trying to be controversial a sie 16 is not massive and if you are larger all you do is eat mars bars right ??? My friend is a toned large framed size 16 who cycles everyday and swims most and does not drink or smoke. But is she a size 6 and smoked etc that be ok ?? Oh pusheed push off !

my2centsis · 09/03/2012 18:46

Definitely complain!!

Sorry she was such a tossed OP

bibbityisaporker · 09/03/2012 18:53

Yes, Pusheed is trying very hard on lots of threads!

FilterCoffee · 09/03/2012 19:32

YANBU. They're not there to assess your weight, so it was impolite.

Pusheed · 09/03/2012 23:23

I am not trying to be anything. I am posting what I think.

Sorry ladies but size 16 is fat. If everyone around you was also a size 16 then that doesn't detract from the fact that size 16 is fat. It just means that you have fat friends.

What I do find funny are all the posters who swear like a drunken sailor AND then go 'Pusheed called her fat! OMG. How rude!' :o

Pumpster · 09/03/2012 23:32

Aw pusheed I bet you're fucking ugly though! Or have a very small dick...

chipmunksex · 09/03/2012 23:36

wags finger.

Pumpster · 09/03/2012 23:40

Sorry pusheed....I think are gorgeous and have a massive willy

bringbacksideburns · 09/03/2012 23:56

Definitely complain. You are supposed to walk out feeling like a million dollars, not pissed off by an insensitive remark.
