Ok I don't think I really do, I think I'd feel a bit grubby but I was speaking to a mum at school who was telling me this is what she does during the day and can make about £200 a week!

I have visions of Big Mo in Easties being Miss Whiplash whilst doing the ironing. I could well do with an extra £200 a week though - who couldn't?

Anyone done this?

Thankyou inout. Just called the dh and told him I'm thinking of a career change, he said "No-one in their righted minds would pay to listen to your tones" and worse of all "MN is a corrupting influence" Shock.

Should I just leave the bastard? and take the land-line with me?

loopylou6 · 08/03/2012 17:54

Grin witch, my DH used to loiter outside the bedroom door perving listening in.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 08/03/2012 18:00

Oh loopy Grin, yeah Mr Pathan would be a perver auditory observer as well, I just know it.

inout can I have Peg Man? and Balloon Man if it's getting a bit samey?.

CalamityKate · 08/03/2012 19:15

The one I worked for had no rules about how much/when you worked - some weeks I was logged in loads, other weeks I didn't log in at all, or logged in for an hour.

LulaPalooza · 08/03/2012 20:42

So, I just read through the Information Pack for one of these chatline operators.

I don't think this is for me.

I was shocked and appalled at the badly drafted guidance notes e.g. "You?re Payment Structure"
The hours wouldn't fit in with my regular job and once I had paid tax and NI on the 14p a minute it wouldn't be worth it.

There's a niche market for mature ladies, apparently. This made me Grin
The customers coming in on group 9 like the ladies to be as old as possible. The older the better! You can chat sexual on this service but again I would chat clean for as long as possible so you can build your minutes up. If you could imagine your fiction character that you will be using but as an older version, perhaps you could put on an old croaky voice as this would definitely make it a more realistic experience for the customer.

LulaPalooza · 08/03/2012 20:44

HEH! I am going to recommend this to my Mum! She'd be brilliant at it.

Of course, there's always a strong possibility that she does it already
Shock

bringbacksideburns · 08/03/2012 20:47

I want to watch that programme - must remember!

I couldn't do it - i'd get bored and start doing a funny voice.

Ooh - but the money ...

inoutshakeitallabout · 08/03/2012 22:04

exactly, hence my warning earlier to make sure you find a legit company and not someone calling themselves one! the industry is rife with these sorts and that info pack quote is not representative of a legit company

LulaPalooza · 08/03/2012 22:42

inout - do MN rules prevent me from linking to the website of that company? I am relatively new here.

JockTamsonsBairns · 08/03/2012 22:57

I know of someone who did this a couple of years ago. The deal was, the chat company took the money for the first 7 minutes of each call, then the operator pocketed the rest - obviously therein lies the incentive to keep the caller on the line as long as possible. Also, it was expected that she would do at least one unsocial hours shift each week. I think chatline companies get plenty of operators willing to work school hours, but that's not where the money is to be made.

inoutshakeitallabout · 09/03/2012 12:06

i would say be very careful, these companies are rightfully very protective as a lot of people just badmouth and ruin the industry, so they are very strict on what is and is not said on forums et al , especially when hired with them

crystalglasses · 09/03/2012 12:24

Are chat line operators registered as self employed or is tax and NI deducted by the organisation? How does the tax system work?

I've thought it would be quite an interesting job but I'm worried about the exploitation of men tbh as I see the ones that use these chat lines as rather vulnerable and pathetic.

inoutshakeitallabout · 09/03/2012 13:21

100% self employed, hardly exploitation, none of them are forced to ring up and several of them are what you would consider normal delving into fetishes etc they wouldnt want to upset their gf/.wives with

most have partners, kids, work in an office or as a manager, to look at them, you wouldnt suspect, theyre just average men by and large but for those who are awkward, but then, it lets them have some resemblance to female conversation that in real life, females may not be wanting to offer for one reason or another

TwllBach · 09/03/2012 21:09

Are you allowed to specialise? As in, can I ask only to get calls from people who want to be dominant for example?

Eatingsquare · 03/01/2013 11:45

I guess if you want to do it, and I for one could do with the extra money, it would be good to know the best lines to go on. Any tips?

Eatingsquare · 03/01/2013 11:47

How do you find the best chat line to go with?

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 03/01/2013 12:48

Zombi thread!!

How do people find threads that are soooooo old???

massagebliss · 01/02/2013 19:01

hello , when you said about where to find good firms, what did you mean by thread

MrsKeithRichards · 01/02/2013 20:06

People can't win, if someone had posted a new thread I'm sure someone would say this has already been done, do a search.

Find a good company? Google.

MrsKeithRichards · 01/02/2013 20:10

And have a look at this blog she seems to have a clue.

MammaTJ · 01/02/2013 20:21

Eatingsquare, the person who resurrected the Zombie thread, is a journalist, clearly in need of a story!!

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 01/02/2013 20:24

How do you know what character you will have to be when the phone rings? How do you know if the guy has selected say Horny Housewife or Gagging Grannies?

MrsKeithRichards · 01/02/2013 20:38

You get a whisper telling you what category the caller is coming through on before you connect to the caller.

Same as call centres really, I've worked in one where you were dealing with a few different lines (banking, business banking, internet banking helpdesk) you would pick up the phone, the system would say which line you had, it would beep then you were with the call.

lopsidedsue · 19/02/2013 17:33

This sounds like an ideal option as am finding it very difficult to get a full time job at the moment and can't survive on JSA. My one big reservation is the potential of the family listening at the door (and more than likely killing themselves laughing). I can handle talking dirty etc to an anonymous customer and the company listening in, but never for the family to hear.

CharlotteCraig · 15/05/2013 13:49

Some firms will insist you do certain shifts - obviously they prefer evenings, especially very late, and weekends. If you make it clear you refuse to work then they may well refuse to take you on. Others will let you clock on and off to suit you but they are usually the ones that pay less. You must not make or take any other calls while you are on duty. Once you have logged on you must be available. Either tell friends you will ring them or if they ring you to ring at certain times only or that you cannot chat if they ring at the wrong time. Be well organised. Likewise if someone rings the doorbell while you are on duty you must ignore it, you must be available to take that call. But you could wait hours and hours for that call.

Some of you seem to assume that if you are on duty you get a few calls each hour. Dream on. You can be on for four hours before you get just one two minute call. And then no more calls for another four hours or till the next time. Most calls last five minutes if you are good at keeping them talking. Many of them live in a fantasy world where they want you to say your details and where you live so that they can rush over, get undressed, jump on you and f* k you and then go back to the girlfriend or wife. In other words treating you like a prostitute - but a dozy one who does it all for free! Many of the callers have a fetish. You do not give your own number to any of the callers and you cannot use a mobile. The company you work for puts calls through to your landline. If you do not put an adventurous and broadminded intro tape on their message service you will get no calls or a lot less calls. If you are easily shocked or hate to hear or say filth do not do it. Most of the men will spout rubbish about how they have just been in an orgy or been raped by Miss World or been invited to go and meet Halle Berry for a night of passion, you must talk to them as if you believe them. Others are plain coarse and common and will go on about how they lust after their mother in law.

Ignore the so called sex chat workeres who go on about how they get £1.50 a minute. They are leaving out that most of that goes on vat, marketing, admin, the website, maybe a receptionist and an agency, as well as the big gaps when nobody calls. And most men will never bother to ring such expensive lines when there are so many that are much cheaper.

As for the internet having taken it's place. You will find that if you go into a chat room for private chats you will be swamped with guys asking you for free dirty chat because they do not want to pay to ring these lines. But of course all they end up with is gay men or old married men, because women either charge on chat lines or are not interested at all.

Most of the callers are men who are totally out of synch with women. They truly believe that YOU - even if you are beautiful sexy and young - have trouble getting sex and you are desperate for it same as him. That he is doing you a favour. That no other man wants you. They also forget that they are just one of your many callers.

If you cannot keep people on the line for long not only do you earn very little but you get the sack. These companies are not going to invest thousands of pounds a week in advertising and marketing just to waste the calls on staff who cannot make a profit for them.
