I can't remember what my minute-ly rate was but I think it worked out about £8 an hour. It's more if you're willing to work unsociable hours though.

I think I did it for about 9 months in all and ended up getting bored with it. It's not as easy as it sounds - or at least it's not if you take it seriously and really want the customer to be, erm, satisfied. Unless you're lucky and get a really dominant caller, in which case all you have to do is whimper a bit (as opposed to having to be inventive and chatty if you get a submissive/masochist one) you DO have to be on the ball and wide awake. If your heart's not in it, or you're under par or tired, it shows in your voice and earnings go down.

I think it's a perfectly valid job though and it can be lots of fun. It improved mine and DP's sex life because a) It opened the door to some very enlightening chats about fantasies etc and b) It's a bit like how talking about food makes you hungry; talking about sex made me hornier.

I never once had an abusive caller. In fact I emailed Dear Deirdre once because one of the letters on her problem page was from a young woman asking about chatline work, and Deirdre was all "Oooh, no - it's risky and demeaning and you'll get abusive callers blah blah" and just generally proving she knows NOTHING about it at all.

I am guessing that you are deemed to be self-employed then? As per minute salary/ no guarantee of minimum wage is unlawful if you are an employee.

What Calamity said. Also you set up 'characters', the more characters you have the more calls you will get. So the phone rings and voice says "call for nubile leggy submissive blonde" or "naughty housewife" then you are connected.

I never actually worked for them, I was that close (holds thumb and forefinger close) had my pin number etc, but then met now dh.

If a chatline operator is waiting for calls and actually spends only 20 minutes actually chatting in an hour, each call lasting less than 5 minutes, how much would an operator earn per hour? For 20 minutes? (4 x 5 minute calls)

You would be paid for 20 minutes. I think (and I'm really not sure it was a few years ago) I was offered about 7 - 8p a minute

So unless you are inundated with constant calls, where your phone is ringing off the hook, it is quite possible to be available to chat for an hour, but only actually chat for 20 minutes every hour and earn £1.40/£1.60 in an hour??

So for a 40 hour week, where you have been available and waiting for a call, and chatting on every single call you get in those 40 hours, but only actually chatting for 20 minutes every hour, you could only earn between £56 and £64 a week?

And what happens if your friend phones you for a chat while you are waiting for a call?
