Yes - did you see the documentary? Hmm

LilacWaltz · 06/03/2012 19:27

More creepy is the way some women 'use' them..

DontWorryBeHappy1994 · 06/03/2012 19:33

I didn't see the documentary no, was it seriously weird?
I have read a load of magazines with stories about mega weird derranged people who have them. Also saw a woman on this morning a few weeks ago who had like 40 or something, WTF?!

The uncanny valley theory.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley

We tolerate things looking humanlike to a certain point. Once we get past that point and the closer it looks to being human the more we are revulsed by it.

lolajane2009 · 06/03/2012 19:37

yanbu, but my mother in laws china dolls are even scarier

Ahh I've heard of that, dishwasherfromhell. I remember seeing that robot on James mays big ideas or something and it really freaked me out.

Lolajane, i love China dolls now, used to have nightmares about them when i was young though thanks to my cousins terrorising me with them by telling me they came alive at night and killed little girls and then putting them under my duvet ready to make me scream when i went to bed!

I was in a shop a couple of weeks ago and they had the reborn dolls.
They looked so real in their little cribs.Shock

I agree, creepy all the way. YANBU at all.

DontWorryBeHappy1994 · 06/03/2012 19:47

On the same line of creepy dolls and creepier documentaries check these links out:

warning contains adult themes and very strange men

I find it strange and I think, in all honestly, people that have them have some issues that need to be looked at. The 'adult' ones are vile.

GavisconJunkie · 06/03/2012 20:35

I'd never heard of them until recently, saw one for sale on fb page.

Eeew! & YADNBU, why??? Simply why?

weekendworrier · 06/03/2012 20:38

Although I find the dolls unsettling, I hope the women who own them get some comfort from them. It must be really hard to want a baby and not be able to have one for whatever reason.
They are not hurting anyone, so I don't know why they ( the dolls and their owners) provoke such strong feelings of disgust Confused

The documentary I saw it wasn't women who couldn't have kids - one of the ladies had one made esp by a lady off the net to look like her newborn Grandson as she missed him since he moved to Australia......Shock

DontWorryBeHappy1994 · 06/03/2012 20:52

Omg the real dolls are vile! Even worse than the reborns!
And i understand your point weekendworrier, but not all the women who own them can't have children, a lot are just creepy ladies with a seriously strange hobby/obsession.

Fecklessdizzy · 06/03/2012 20:56

Personally they give me the heebie-jeebies but each to their own ... File under Weird But Harmless. Wink

SorryMyLollipop · 06/03/2012 21:10

My friend's dd had a reborn doll in an old car seat in their car, they got summoned out of asda over the tannoy to find their car surrounded by security and worried onlookers about to phone the police! It was one with eyes open so less realistic as well. Doh!

CaoNiMa · 07/03/2012 06:22

IMO, hatred for the women who collect these dolls is just a permissible way of reviling and ostracizing females with mental illness. They are obviously mentally unwell to project so much love and attention onto the dolls. How about some compassion instead of hatred?

Codandchops · 07/03/2012 06:51

Some of the women in that documentary linked to were very strange although I could understand and sympathise with the lady whose grandson had gone to live in Australia.

I don't mind them especially, my auntie had one but she had a couple of her chilldren's dolls in an antique pram and didn't "play" with them or take them out etc. The reborn doll was named Francisca (Francis) after her great grandson in Switzerland.

I'd love to have one made based on a photo of DS as a baby but they cost huge amounts of money. I wouldn't be taking it out, just put it in the bedroom.

If you really want creepy then take a look at this

MarieFromStMoritz · 07/03/2012 07:03

Thanks Codandhips, that's gonna give me nightmares Grin
