Ugh that really really freak me out!! Each to their own but if a friend bought one to my house I'd be asking her to leave it in the car! (hopes DD never ends up a doll lover)

Codandchops · 07/03/2012 07:19

Oh that Bradford Exchange site is a gift - especially the "collectible dolls" section Grin. Always haul myself over there if low - cheers me up no end Grin.

ripsishere · 07/03/2012 07:19

They and their owners are bizarre but, live and let live I say.

StealthPenguin · 07/03/2012 09:48

They seriously give me the heebiejeebies. Never liked them. My spine just goes cold!

Hullygully · 07/03/2012 09:53

scary scary mary

VinegarTits · 07/03/2012 09:56

well shag me sideways, TMMJ, i havent seen you on mn in years!

memphis83 · 07/03/2012 09:56

My friends mum has two and the first time I visited as a teenager I had a massive panic attack, it really freaked me out. We went there with my toddler the other week and he thought it was real and when he touched it he freaked out!
We have a woman who comes to our shop who makes accessories for Reborns, she makes a packet from the things she sells but thinks they are weird, she has a doll to photograph her products with and she says she finds it so strange she keeps it in the garage! Grin

Archemedes · 07/03/2012 09:59

I saw a market stall with them once And I think everyone walked past going ewwww,

felt a bit sorry for the seller.

Chopstheduck · 07/03/2012 10:08

georgethecat, that is seriously freaky! Makes the reborns seem quite normal in comparison!

The first doll looked like Michael Jackson Grin

SarahBumBarer · 07/03/2012 10:10

Yanbu! I nearly started this thread last week. I was looking on ebay for a baby doll (to try and "talk" to DS about having a baby sister - epic fail) and came across these creepy things. uuuugh!!

Bloodymary · 07/03/2012 10:20

Reborn dolls seriously freak out a girl I used to work with.
When she was a young girl she found her baby sibling dead in the cot (due to a cot death).

These remind her of that moment Sad

theincredibequeenofwands · 07/03/2012 10:28

For the longest time I thought reborn dolls were a sex thing.

Watched a documentary about some men who had dolls as 'companions' and assumed it was the same.

Obviously now I know different but they're still creepy. I do find dolls in general slightly creep though.

I'd still keep my distance from anyone who had a 'reborn'. I find it incrediblt strange.

notso · 07/03/2012 10:35

They are very, very creepy.

I saw the documentary on real dolls. Like in the link georgethecat posted, that was very shuddery. There was a man who was sitting with his lady dolls dressed next to him but they couldn't 'sit' properly because the legs had been streched open from 'over use' .

Codandchops I jumped out of my skin when that picture appeared on my screen!

StilettoJam · 07/03/2012 10:36

The monkey reborns are astonishing. Why? I just cannot get my head to understand the reborn doll thing.

I don't want to judge those that find them attractive, I want to understand why.

BallerinaBetty · 07/03/2012 10:49

I find them deeply upsetting. I had a stillborn son and to me the dolls look like dead babies. Even seeing an advert for them will reduce me to tears on a bad day.

Lunabelly · 07/03/2012 10:52

I find most baby dolls quite creepy, so yanbu. But I totally understand the reasoning and emotions that drive these women - and if these dolls help them get through the day, then who are any of us to judge?

In one article I read, a woman had lost her daughter in a road accident, and was being driven mad with grief. She found a reborn that looked just like her daughter did as a baby, and that doll has saved her. How could anyone begrudge her that? She knows it's not her daughter, but that doll (however damned creepy!) gives her a comfort that she needs right now and is helping her.

Creepy, yes, but I think a Good Thing.

Codandchops · 07/03/2012 13:40

Ballerina you are not alone in this, I have never had a baby stillborn but as a midwife helped several women in that same dreadful position.
Interestingly when I attended a bereavement course a tutor bought in one of these reborns and many of the midwives wouldn't touch or hold it because it reminded them too much of babies who had died Sad.

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 07/03/2012 13:46

There was another thread about this a few weeks ago and was side splittingly funny, Grin

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 07/03/2012 13:48

OH I'M TALKING ABOUT A DIFFERENT TOPIC

I'm sorry xxx

2nd mistake on MN today, i'm tired.

Going to bed xx

LittleWhiteWolf · 07/03/2012 13:55

I'm in two minds about this. I saw that doc a few years ago, before I had DD I think. Anyway, part of me finds them very creepy (but not a fan of any baby dolls really) and another part feels that the women who buy them deserve sympathy. I cannot imagine what possesses them to want to own one of these, but they must have their reasons. The person who stuck in my mind the most was the grandmother who brought up her grandson as a baby as her daughter was very ill. She became better and fell in love and emigrated to Oz. I felt for the grandmother, but couldn't help but feel that her reason for wanting her "Harry doll" was selfish and I found it hard to feel sympathy for her.

jellybeans · 07/03/2012 14:18

YABU each to their own. I wouldn't have one, not into dolls, but would think nothing of someone who did. People go way overboard on judginess with these for some bizarre reason!

devilsadvocaat · 07/03/2012 14:22

check this out

devilsadvocaat · 07/03/2012 14:24

She has a whole list of videos of her looking after her twins.

Look at the comments underneath. People love them. Really love them.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 07/03/2012 14:26

They're hideous. I've seen one of the "premature" ones and it gave me the heebie geebie's!

devilsadvocaat · 07/03/2012 14:31

Amazing lip sync
