A friend told me about a woman she knows who has 3 year old twins and a 2 year old. Her husband works away for long periods of time. She doesn't cook while he's away - the children eat freezer food like fish fingers, chicken nuggets etc and she has ready meals. When he's home he cooks, but when he's away they just eat things from the oven for convenience.

I can't begin to imagine what life is like with 3 under 3 but surely preparing fresh food at least occasionally is important for nutrition and learning about food? I find it really odd and a bit sad.

lequeen if you did all that you could act like mrs smug mummy and look down on those eating out if the freezer

OTheHugeManatee · 05/03/2012 13:23

LeQueen - I think you'd have to mash the potatoes and then squeeze them through a special smiley face shaped mashed-potato-nozzle into a deep fryer to get the full Smiley Faces potato experience.

If you did that from scratch you would definitely deserve a MN Mummy Martyr medal Hmm

OTheHugeManatee · 05/03/2012 13:25

Ooh - note to self - must start making own alphabetti spaghetti from scratch.

RabidEchidna · 05/03/2012 13:25

90% of the veg we use at home is frozen, and I have been known to use jars of sauce if in a hurry Blush eldest DS is very funny with food and last night we had a lovely rib of roast beef and DS1 had sausage because I would rather he eat something instead of nothing.

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 13:26

Maryz. Correct me if I'm wrong but for you and LeQ to eat Homemade Smiles you'd also have to somehow appropriate

a) A Baby
b) A lactating breast

to prevent legal repercussion please stick to Mcains

Get your friend to ask her friend for a full list of what she and her family eats over a month, then we can judge properly. Unless your friend has done this then she doesn't know everything they eat. She might buy precut fruit to give them.

Moominsarescary · 05/03/2012 13:41

lequeen said breastfeeding and unnatural in the same sentence , she will surely be struck be lightning now, or attacked by an angry mob

maryz I go for cheap, I may even try to grow my own when we move. We bought blueberries from aldi the other day for 59p for 125g in coop they were £3, both came from chile.

Moominsarescary · 05/03/2012 13:43

Just thought though, you can buy bags of frozen berries. Has anybody tried them?

I made my own fishfingers once, they don't freeze well

Moominsarescary · 05/03/2012 13:53

I'll give it a go, my grandad grows tomatoes in hanging baskets. He always seems to be watering them. I'll probably forget

HillyWallaby · 05/03/2012 13:59

TBH, I imagine that's the way most people with toddlers eat. Rightly or wrongly, it does not shock me.

QuickLookBusy · 05/03/2012 15:10

Agree with you Maryz. We had veg beds in our garden when we moved here. We tried for 2 years to grow carrots/leeks/salads etc as well as soft fruits. We ended up with tiny weeny pathetic looking things, which fed us for about 2 meals. It wasn't worth the effort.

I love frozen peas/broccoli/cauliflower and spiniach. Much handier than buying fresh then having little left over bits looking at you everytime you open the fridge.

Moominsarescary · 05/03/2012 15:12

But has anyone tried frozen blueberries/raspberries ?
