A friend told me about a woman she knows who has 3 year old twins and a 2 year old. Her husband works away for long periods of time. She doesn't cook while he's away - the children eat freezer food like fish fingers, chicken nuggets etc and she has ready meals. When he's home he cooks, but when he's away they just eat things from the oven for convenience.

I can't begin to imagine what life is like with 3 under 3 but surely preparing fresh food at least occasionally is important for nutrition and learning about food? I find it really odd and a bit sad.

Agreeboomerwang you will be fine, some boiled broccoli and carrots and mine were well away (and baby's don't care if you accidentally over boil them)

My youngest loves it when his 17 year old brother makes pasta, chicken, tinned tomatoes and mushrooms. Which he just sticks in a big pan and boils add some frozen veg and no real cooking envolved at all.

He has also been known to steal his chicken nuggets and alphbites too

Man! I cant belive I missed this thread.

Not only am a huge fan, nay advocate, of frozen veg, I stick my DC5 in a cage when I cook.

I swear DOWN! (as the kidz say) I will never, not ever, chop another onion or garlic bulb as long as I have a freezer and enough lecky to keep it running.

And I will bloody miss that cage when DC5 works out how to open the gate/climb over the top.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/03/2012 08:51

I love smiley faces.
Have we done smiley faces yet?

They look like this Smile Smile Smile
and they tasted delish with ketchup and mayo.

mmmmmm

Trills · 05/03/2012 08:52

I don't eat any kind of broccoli. Frozen or not. It's not very nice.

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 08:56

Tinned Tomatos hold more lycopenes than fresh so us scummy mummys win on the reducing chances of dropping dead of heart disease stakes too.

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 08:58

Trills you have to eat your Broccoli it has feathery brushes on it which clean out all your insides on the way down.

noddyholder · 05/03/2012 09:00

I think its a taste thing for some all frozen tastes yuck to me except peas. Didn't the health council say that fresh or frozen the closer something looks to its natural state whether frozen or fresh the better off we are. So veg is probably nutritionally ok but a smiley face isn't. Did someone say turkey twizzler Grin

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/03/2012 09:03

I would like to post in praise of ultra cheapo frozen broc and cauli flourettes.

They are teeeny and are far more likely to be eaten by a reluctant DC than those big yummy ones that I prefer.

noddy but smiley faces smile. How can that not be good for you?

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 09:06

I prefer frozen corn to fresh, unless it's straight from field to my plate via boiling salted water.

My fresh veg and fruit consumption is driven purely by what is seasonal, apart from Broccoli, but I bear a grudge since toegate, and oranges.

Bogeyface · 05/03/2012 09:11

SALTED water honeydragon?!

Where's my pitchfork....?

:o

Bogeyface · 05/03/2012 09:13

Just to add my two penneth, I like frozen veg in theory but in reality we only eat frozen peas as the texture of most frozen veg is gopping. They all go a bit soft and mushy, no matter how little you cook them and I prefer mine with a bit of bite.

Just off to remove the splinters from my arse from this fence....

Boiled? You boil veg??

Moominsarescary · 05/03/2012 09:16

I'll admit that for the first four months weaning ds3 I became a bit obsessed with fresh veg and wouldn't let dp buy frozen, then I realised being pg again and all the hormones was making me slightly insane.

Dp came home with a big bag of frozen broccoli and another of couliflower at the weekend and I put them in my freezer without clutching my pearls at all

Bogeyface · 05/03/2012 09:18

I wouldnt be able to microwave enough for us in one go Maryz, I cook dinner for 8 most nights! I use the steamer which I find is more forgiving if you overcook it, but that doesnt work either!

Mind you, my veg will be coming from the allotment again this year now I am no longer pg, so I will be smuggy pants with my straight-from-the-ground veggies :o

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 09:22

Bogey no need for arse splinters, I prefer my fetch crunchy as does dh, although his preference is as a result of having everything boiled to a uniform shade of yellow.

And yes

I HONEYDRAGON LIKE SALT ON MY CORN ON THE COB.

AND

I PUT IT ON HEINZ TOMATO SOUP TOO

TheBigJessie · 05/03/2012 09:28

I boil vegetables. I tried steaming, and found it produced vegetables with the taste and texture of parboiled ones. If I want to under-cook vegetables, I can achieve that with just a saucepan! No superfluous steamer required.

This was reporter Jessie, reporting from her crusade against washing-up.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/03/2012 09:42

I steam everything.
Because then I dont have to think about it.

I dont like cooking

Hecubasdaughter · 05/03/2012 10:13

I went into the Coop on the way back from the school run to look at prices. The fresh broccoli was 90p and the frozen £1.89. So the frozen cost 99p more.

However the frozen came in a 1kg bag and the fresh as 300g so fresh is £3.00 per kg. I then calculate that frozen is £1.11 cheaper that is 58% cheaper and as it lasts longer plenty of time to use it. So really frozen broccoli isn't much cheaper at all Hmm

CHEESYWELLINGTONS not that I have to justify myself to you, you judgmental pain in the fucking arse, but my husband sacrificed 3 weeks of his annual leave to buy this for me as a gift. A fucking gift, so cocking well shoot me for accepting an expensive gift when I feed my family on a budget!

Honest to fucking god!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/03/2012 10:20

Less waste with frozen too.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/03/2012 10:21
